5-3 Czech Republic. Sweden...their goaltending lets them down.
Their powerplay is magnificent but they had serious trouble 5-on-5 against Finland so I too think Czech has the horses to get it done.

6-2 Czech win.

changes made.

Jörgen Jönsson replaces Henrik Zetterberg on the second line and will play center between Forsberg and Näslund.

Daniel Tjärnqvist out, Marcus Ragnarsson in.
So the Swedish lines tonight should be:

Fredrik Modin - Mats Sundin - Daniel Alfredsson
Peter Forsberg - Jörgen Jönsson - Markus Näslund
Andreas Johansson - Henrik Zetterberg - PJ Axelsson
Marcus Nilson - Samuel Påhlsson - Tomas Holmström

Nicklas Lidström - Kim Johnsson
Mattias Öhlund - Dick Tärnström
Mattias Norström - Marcus Ragnarsson

Mikael Tellqvist
Tommy Salo

Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin, Nils Ekman, Christian Bäckman and Henrik Lundqvist have yet to play a minute in this tournament.

Hopefully Sweden gets their "lost" stars back to track. Näslund, Zettenberg, Forsberg. Not that they've played bad, but I expect alot more.

And I wan't to see more goals than in Finland-Germany game. That's possible because there's ALOT more indivitual skill on ice tonight.

1. Modin-Sundin-Holmström
2. Fobba-Zettenberg-Alfredsson
3. Nilsson-Jönsson-Näslund
4. Johansson-Påhlsson-Axelsson

Nicklas Lidström - Mattias Öhlund
Mattias Norström - Dick Tärnström
Kim Johnsson - Marcus Ragnarsson

2-0 to the Czechs. Right on schedule. 3 or 4 shots on goal for Sweden, including the first few shots in the first shift and the 1.45 minutes of powerplay. As expected the defensive play is virtually nonexistant and they are sloppy in the neutral zone. I wouldn't want to be Tellqvist after this one, it will be a blowout and he'll end up looking stupid on a lot of the goals that the poor defense really caused.

A 2-0 score line to the Czech's isn't that surprising. We all know they played extremely poorly in the round robin, but what does that matter now. They just need to win this game to wash al those poor performances away. But having said that, the form sweden showed in opening round suggested they would be a force in these knock out stages.... its still all to play for and either way a talented side will progress and one will go out. I think sweden will come back to squeak it in the late stages of the third.

I didn't think I'd see worse coaching than Dave Lewis or Tony Granato this year, but man, I was wrong. Sweden's defense is terrible, and the only forwards that seem to be really doing anything are Forsberg, Sundin, Homer and Zetterberg.

Well it's fair to say that the game is (almost) over.

I said it right from day 1 that the Czechs are one of the favorites, but it just took them some time to get accustomed to each other and set their lines.

The chechs are playing perfectly. Most swedish players look tired or have no real go.

Chechs could come back strong in World Cup. I remember Canada playing bad the first three games the last World Cup(lost to Sweden 5-2 etc) and then they woke up and won the last three. I think that could happen for the Chechs.

One period left and 0-3, its over for Sweden this time. But Hardy is a horrible coach. He must be fired after this...

Me and SNA were talking about it in the chat, and it's something I've thought for a few years.

Forsberg is indeed one of the laziest players I've seen. Now before all you Foppa lovers say "Look at all his points". I said he was lazy, but he's damn good.

When I watch him play, it's almost like a lightbulb will go off in his head every 10 shifts or so telling him to make something happen, and he will. But he's no where near the complete player people say he is.

I've thought for a while now, and his comments reassure it, his heart is not in the NHL anymore, and by after watching this tournament I wonder if he cares about Hockey anymore in general.

Forsberg's not lazy, he just has no patience. He gets frustrated so easily, which is why everyone he plays against makes it a point to try to get in his head. When he's off his game you can't say he's not trying, he just doesn't focus his energy in the right place.

Reg Forsberg,
Has everyone forgot that Forsberg is more than one month behind all players in terms of practice? It was for a long time unsure if he'd even dress up for Sweden.
I would be surprised if he was able to even give 50%.

The player people should be concentrating on is Markus Näslund, if you have that urge to single out players.

Sure you can say that. There's no question that Forsberg would be a better player if he didn't get frustrated so easily, but when he's healthy and on his game he's the best.

If he is hurt or not in game shape, that's a different story all together.

He was still dealing with that nagging abdominal injury that plagued him all of last season during this tournament. Not an excuse for him not to produce but it was clear that he's not 100%. Of course the injury thing is another issue all together with Forsberg.

As for Sweden.. we will be back in 10-20 years! :)

More likely it will be 20 years because this is probably the last time our "stars" play together. In the future we will have less talented players with the same attitude as today's players. :(

If we had lost because our goalie isn't good enough I wouldn't have a problem with it since it's a known problem but this is too much.

BTW, do we have AHL fans here? Can anyone tell me that Johan Holmqvist is that much worse than Tellqvist? I don't think so but please tell me I'm wrong and that coach Nilsson made the right decision to use Tellqvist while Holmqvist wasn't even in the squad.

Tellqvist showed promise in his short stints last year but, but was generally mediocre at the American league level.

We always suck when it counts, thats a fact, at least for this generation and much can be blamed on our worthless coach hardy Nilsson, but not everything.

- Why didn't he play the best goalie, Lundqvist ? Of course it's easy to say afterwards but many claimed that he should be the number one before the tournament

- Why don't bench some players, like Näslund ? Why don't rotate a bit like tge other teams did ? Now the "stars" felt safe about a place in the line-up and didn'nt have to work.

Kick Hardy !

Congrats Czech for a deserved place in the semifinals !

Unfortunately I do not think so.

First Hardy was interviewed in the TV-studio. Well, not interviewed but actually slaughtered by the host, who constantly questioned his abilities as a coach. (Hardy kept his cool though, very surprisingly.. I thought he would walk out from the "interview".

Then the big boss of the federation, Christer Englund, was interviewed. He was asked the question "Will Hardy be fired, will you do anything about this". Englund answered "No, will not do anything" ... more or less.

But I guess there is still a possibility that Hardy walks out himself, although he has said that he wants to continue to coach team Sweden.

I honestly beleive that Hardy is part of the problem with Team Sweden. On the one hand, the team did not show up to play and got schooled by a great Czech team.

On the other hand, he should be blamed for the team's performance on the ice and the selections he made for the team that played on the ice. What I never understood is why Hardy stuck with Tellqvist. Tellqvist showed poor stick skills and got scored on quite a few times for not putting his stick down on the ice at all. Not only that but more often that not he committed to shots WAY too early giving the opposing puck handler an easy score. Also, why wasn't Henrik Lundqvist used at all? Russia has a netminder who has no NHL experience why not put Lundqvist in net during the round-robin play?

I really got the feeling that if any of the NHL players were not giving their all like Brett Hull Hardy would have been too afraid to bench any of them.

First of all, congratulations to the Czech team for giving us a lesson in the art of hockey (I hope we'll do the homework and bounce back in the future sometime), and the Czech fans for being fans for having something to look forward to, I'm sure they can give Canada a run for the money in the semis. Congrats! :handclap:

As for Sweden's performance, I'm speechless, there's not much to say. It was horrible, terrible, embarrassing, humiliating, just un unbelievable poor performance. To me this feels as embarrassing as the loss to Belarus did, losing to the Czechs itself is nothing to be embarrassed about as they're a great team, but the way we lost sure is, and also the final score. If it had ended 2-3 or 1-3 or something, that's fine I guess, but 1-6, that's way too humiliating. This feels like one of the most embarrassing moments ever in the history of Swedish hockey. Feels like a team from Allsvenskan (Swedish Tier-2 league) would do better out there, at least they'd show more heart than these guys did!

What I never understood is why Hardy stuck with Tellqvist.

Hardy was the coach for Djurgården, Tellqvist played for Djurgården. Hardy always favour players from DIF. Simple as that, I would have played Lundqvist too..

md17
09-08-2004, 02:11 AM
Simple put, Hardy didn't have the balls. He should have played Lundqvist. He has shown plenty enough in SEL and WC's.
Not that it had made any difference in this game, but it tells something about cranky ol' Hardy. He should step down. Besides, IMO he hasn't really been able to build any kind of consistent, recognisable game-plan for his Tre Kronor. The torpedo was quickly forgotten, and I have no idea what he was going for after that. Seems like he has just been trying to adjust to the players he's had in each tournament rather than trying to make the players play his game.
This is just a casual opinion from a casual Tre Kronor anti-fan, but I'll take a shot anyways, since Hardy is such a juicy target right now :-)

SergeIK and me actually agree on something, that's a first:
I wouldn't be that hard on Tre Kronor because Czechs played some brilliant hockey. They played hard, weren't intimidated, the defence was very organized and discplined... anyone else think Malik was rock solid? And the puck movement, prettiest hockey I've seen for a long long time, sure looks easy when you got the skill and the whole team is working together. If they can keep that up, they'll beat Canada in semis. Seriously.

Freudian
09-08-2004, 03:20 AM
I think many in the team expected someone else to do it, and when some of those "someone else" didn't perform everything kinda collapsed. Shaky goaltending and defense didn't help. Very few Swedish players performed as we have the right to expect.

Only bright spot for Sweden in this whole tournament was powerplay. And that is not enough in a short tournament like this.

Credit to the Czech though. They know this style of play (get and early lead and counterattack their opponents) very well. They looked good the last 7 periods, so hope they can continue playing well and give Canada a good match.
