"They beat the Canucks, what? once every 5 years" GabbyDugan 09-20-2004, 10:27 PM The 1924-25 Hamilton Tigers. ( found most of this in Charles L. Coleman's "The Trail of the Stanley Cup" - Volume II. A rather interesting case when the NHL was run quite different from the way it is now (or was it?) Some of the Tigers had signed two year contracts in 1923-24, then in 1924-25 the NHL added six more games to the schedule. Hamilton finished first (19-10-1) and earned a bye into the NHL final. They were to play the winner of the Canadiens vs Toronto playoff, but the Hamilton players wanted $ 200 each to play the winner of that series. NHL President Frank Calder got really ticked off, and said that Ottawa, which had finished fourth, would play the winner of the Toronto/Canadiens series. This just made the press, Toronto, and Montreal angry, so Calder said the winner of the Toronto/Canadiens series would defend the Stanley Cup against Victoria, since the teams from the Western Canadian Hockey League were still challenging NHL teams for the Stanley Cup. On March 30, 1925, Victoria defeated the Canadiens 6-1 and won the Stanley Cup. This would be the last time a team outside the NHL would win the Stanley Cup. The Hamilton players remained firm in their strike, and the NHL held a meeting April 17, 1925. The Hamilton players were suspended and fined $ 200 each. The Hamilton Tigers were replaced in the NHL by New York....the NHL began the 1925-26 season with no limit on individual salaries, but no team was to have an aggregate players' payroll in excess of $ 35,000...kind of blurry what happened with the suspensions and fines handed to the Hamilton players, ..it was left in the hands of NHL President Calder...most of the Hamilton players (Billy Burch, Redvers Green, etc.) were original memebers of the New York team in 1925-26. thestonedkoala 09-20-2004, 10:29 PM The Minnesota North Stars... ehc73 09-20-2004, 11:20 PM Nordiques. SkateLikeTheWind 09-20-2004, 11:33 PM I echo this statement. Gotta love that Nords jersey. Agreed. I've always wanted either the Nordique's Sakic jersey, or the North Stars Modano jersey. The white skates didn't go over too well with the players or the trainers whice they had to be painted white. Of course, they had to be constantly repainted since puck marks and scuffing would inevitably occur. Some players joked that the skates weighed 20 pounds by the end of the season..." Superfluous U 09-21-2004, 01:57 AM Definitely "The Whale" Kevin Smith solidified that. :) "Breakfasts come and go, but Hartford - The Whale - only beats Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime" Classic. tripledekehockey 09-21-2004, 11:06 AM the whale High flyin' Habs* 09-21-2004, 11:24 AM Nordiques Shane 09-21-2004, 11:37 AM Gotta be Hartford, "The Whale". I'm only 17. Honorable mentions goes to the Whalers. Malefic74 09-21-2004, 04:58 PM Agreed. I've always wanted either the Nordique's Sakic jersey, or the North Stars Modano jersey. Ideally you should be hunting for Sakic's Nordiques jersey; Broten's North Stars Jersey, Hawerchuk's Jets jersey and Ron Francis' Whalers jersey. Just imagine the respect you would get from hockey nerds like ourselves.... Or if you're a goalie, Liut's Whalers, Essensa's Jets, Casey's North Stars and Bouchard's Nordiques. x-bob 09-21-2004, 05:15 PM Nordiques. . BMC 09-21-2004, 05:50 PM The Whale. CanucksnWpg 09-23-2004, 04:06 AM Winnipeg Jets... I loved watching the Canucks and Jets battle. I remember the year I started watching hockey... first round of the playoffs that year the Canucks and Jets played. The Canucks were down 3 games to 1  Never forget that series. Oh and I want a Khabibulin Jets jersey! Le Golie 09-23-2004, 05:09 AM The Jets defined the word 'cool'. If the mid 90's Jet core would have stayed together and been modernized they would have been something special. Selanne, Zhamnov, Tkachuk, Doan, Khabibulin, Briere etc. Aside from Tkachuk being an ignorant jackass around town and holding out during every training camp, it was such a cool team. GB 09-23-2004, 05:29 AM The Nordiques, as a Habs fan I missed out on most of the Battle of Quebec games. Spiral Architect 09-23-2004, 01:26 PM Easily the Nordiques. What a great name! And only English players on it, to compete with the Canadiens' French-speaking players. Of the teams who have only MOVED, of course the North Stars (still have my 1985 jersey) and the Jets (have a Bobby Hull jersey from the WHA days...only I cut the sleeves off a bit later to make it fit longer!). Never could stand the Whalers, I don't know why. Maybe it was the Coopperalls... :joker: NucksOnly 09-24-2004, 02:28 PM The Blackhawks. :lol Haha, you beat to to it! I was gonna add Nashville, Phoenix, Carolina, Atlanta, Florida... For my favorite defunct team it would have to be the Nords cause of there blue jerseys and The Jets... Separatists vs. Anglophones. Quebec would essentially turn upside down. The Stastnys, Michel Goulet, Dale Hunter, Wilf Paiement, Dan Bouchard, Mario Marois, etc. Now THAT was hockey. They actually scored goals back then. http://hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0000471983.html hunter1909* 09-27-2004, 04:20 PM i love the california golden seals...they were terrible...wore white(girls) skates...not that far off the mark considering they were from oakland... seals never once made the playoffs...traded away the rights to draft guy lafleur for some older retread players... when they played the canadiens...the score would either be 10-0...or else the seals would play so badly the habs would go into a funk and the game would be tied... they should move the calgary flames to oakland...and rename them THE FLAMING RODEO QUEENS rabi_sultan 09-27-2004, 05:11 PM Hail the Whale! :lol good one.
