Just look at my avatar, funniest hockey name ever. Their slogan was:

"No spectators, just witnesses."

Does it get any better than that?

Minnesota Fighting SaintsJohnstown Cheifs
Some of the Johnston Jets (Charlestown Chiefs in Slap Shot and now Johnstown Chiefs) played for the Minnesota Fighting Saints (called the Minnesota Nighthawks at the end of Slap Shot.) Johnstown was the farm-team to the World Hockey Association's Minnesota team.

Jack Carlson couldn't be in the movie as Jack Hanson because he was playing with Minnesota during part of the shooting schedule. Dave "Killer" Hanson played Jack Hanson instead of the character based on him, Dave "Killer" Carlson.

Against teams like the Columbus Cottonmouths, Pee Dee Pride and Lexington Men O'War.

Bob Gainey went to France in the early 1990's for a few weeks to coach the Epinal Squirrels...

There was a Tropical Hockey League that existed in the late 1930's , with four teams worthy of mention:

As a kid, always wondered why would a team call themselves as "Whalers".

Now I love the name. :)

I heard (or read) that since the New England WHA team didn't have a nickname in its first few days, they went by the New England WHA'ers -- with the apostrophe looking like the letter L and thus the Whalers were created.

Favorite names:
Miami Screaming Eagles (of course)
Cincinnati Stingers
Quebec Nordiques (when said in French)
California Golden Seals
San Francisco Spiders
Binghamton Broome Dusters
Beauce Jaros
Chicoutimi Saguenéens
