Question regarding AHL contracts

Okay, here's the scenario: Ramzi Abid was obviously locked out by the NHL, because of his age and experience and contract situation, that is he was on his 2nd or 3rd contract. So he signs an AHL deal and will report to the baby Penguins.

What if say the NHL resumes play sometime here, be it in November or in January, and Abid goes up to the NHL, stick around and does his thing, and then the season ends and obviously the Penguins miss the playoffs. Can Abid rejoin the baby Penguins for an AHL playoff run or does his contract become null once the NHL resumes? Are these AHL contracts lockout-only deals like the European ones?

There's no hard and fast rules on the contract as far as it being a "lockout" contract. It could have a clause like that...but it would seem kind of redundant.

As to any special waiver status after the lockout ends...well that's really up to the new CBA. I expect that there will be a waiver model similar to what was in place up until September 15th but as it is part of the CBA agreement we could end up with anything.
