This is the Official thread for the UK's Elite League (http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/index.php) , the top league in Britain.

Results, fixtures and players can all be discussed here.

This is also the place to find rosters for the Elite League, which I'll keep up to date. If you know of any inaccuracies or roster moves feel free to post them and I'll update the rosters.

Here are the stats for all of the players in the EIHL who played in the NHL last year:

Mel Angelstad (http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/statistics/players/index.php?id=397)

Wade Belak (http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/statistics/players/index.php?id=596)

Eric Cairns (http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/statistics/players/index.php?id=585)

Rob Davison (http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/statistics/players/index.php?id=554)

Steve McKenna (http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/statistics/players/index.php?id=580)

Scott Nichol (http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/statistics/players/index.php?id=584)

Roman Tvrdon (http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/statistics/players/index.php?id=330)

In the game logs when it's just the team's city (Newcastle, Fife etc) with no team nickname then it's a team fron the BNL, a slightly lower league, that's playing the EIHL in a cross-league tournament.

GB: Is there any fighting in this league?? If so, do you think anyone will have the guts to drop 'em with a guy like Belak or Cairns?

There is fighting, probably one of the roughest leagues in Europe. Cairns fought a Basignstoke Bison player the other day and apparently won pretty much with ease. I wouldnt expect too much fighting as these guys dont want to get injured on their vacation.

Like Blackburn said it's probably the European league with the most fighting in, it's basically a North American style game. I guess they'll be plenty of players who want to make a name for themselves by beating Cairns, Belak or McKenna. I don't think they'll be fighting too much though.

Kirk Maltby is close to signing with Basingstoke Bison, he was set to join earlier in the season but it fell through, he will join his brother Shawn at the Bison...

He will be the best player in the league when he joins them. That is a real significant signing. How many more players will be joining the league, is that pretty much it now for the NHL influx?

:dunno:

Well, for a start it is by no means certain that he will join...(would be great to see a player of his calibre over here though)....

with regards to any more NHLers coming over, never-say-never, but i can't see too many more coming over simply for the fact that this is about the time teams begin to gel and even if the player you bring in is a superstar (by the UKs standards) it can mess things up a little....

however there have been rumblings of and NHLer or two around Sheffield, Jody Shelly, and one other...

Hull and Bracknell (BNL) have also admitted to being interested, but my point about team geling about now probably applys to these two now than any other team in the country with the Bees seemingly running away with the BNL and Hull really finding their form with a 4-point weekend this weekend including a 1-0 away with at Guildford! :( ...

Roman Tvrdon has been released by Nottingham after suffering a shoulder injury.

Did Maltby join? I'll have to investigate.

Just heard that 3 BNL teams are leaving the BNL next year to join the Elite league (Newcastle Vipers, the Capitals and um.. forgotton the other). While this might cause financial problems for other teams Im hopeful this will be good for British hockey.. finally having a better league structure.

GB, how are the BNL teams doing against the Elite league teams??????????

I can check the scores myself, but are the BNL teams getting outplayed, or are they almost as good as the Elite teams?

I've been tracking the Racers this year because I love a under dog, and their record lase year was rediculous!

Any way it seems the bnl teams are holding their own and I've noticed o lot of players bouncing back and fourth to fill injury gaps.

mind you I'm an internet observer. Havn't seen a single game! But the stats look good. for the bnl teams

Yeah, the BNL teams have shown this year in the cross-league games that if there is a gap between the leagues, it isn't very big.

I live in Nottingham and I am obviously a Panthers fan.Last night i attended the Panthers - Newcastle cross conference game.

Anyone who just reads the basic stats would be forgiven for thinking Panthers played Newcastle off the ice only to be denied by an in-form netminder.SoG 44 -19 in Panthers favour with Newcastle goalie desevedly getting their MoM award. The truth however is that, apart for a 5 minute spell in the first period and another 5 minute spell in the third there was otherwise very little between the 2 sides for much of the remaining 50 minutes.

The only cross conference game which was a mis-match was when we beat Edinburgh 5-1 at NIC.In that Game Panthers gave a lot of ice time to young british players and played very much in about 2nd gear.

Hope this helps.

Tom Carlon and Leigh Jamieson seems like nice prospects. I know Carlon scored a whopping 10 goals in five games in WJC last year (or was it two years ago?). Do they have a bright future? And what type of players are they?

Try here, you can see 12 minutes of highlights from Fife V Newcastle in the BNL from a couple of weeks back...

Not that I know of, but apparently http://www.sports-view.net/ is showing some BNL games. Click on "Ice Hockey".

Hockey in the UK suffers greatly from a lack of TV time. The fans are there but the only coverage on TV is maybe 30 seconds on a local news show with some moron of a reporter whose experience of the great game is a video of Slapshot!

Couldnt agree more. There are plenty of fans gagging for some hockey, yet they have to search long and hard to find some, and will likely not get very high quality games anyway. The sport will never grow without tv coverage here, and yet we have never had any descent coverage. Thats why I follow the NHL and not the British ice hockey leagues, because I can see games without having to treck miles, only to be greeted with hockey that is nowhere near the quality of other leagues.

Whilst not the same level, if you want to see hockey in London, try the Streatham Redskins. As London's oldest and most successful team, they provide an entertaining game for £5. Check out the website http://homepage.ntlworld.com/syihc1/index.html
