It will turn out like every game against the Rioters does. Leafs start strong battle hard and make it look like they can beat them. Then you blink and Vancouver has scored 3 straight unanswered goals and it's over.

This is eminently possible. Wouldn't be the first time. The Canucks' record is somewhat deceptive over the last month as they've been playing like ass most of the time but still squeaking into a tie in the 3rd then winning in OT/SO.

GO LEAFS GO!

Btw... have you guys noticed our PP has been having trouble entering the zone? I've noticed that they are so predictable on that entry pass through the neutral zone. They do that drop back pass in the neutral zone, but it freezes everyone on the offense so they are all standing around and everyone gets jammed up. Also, all the opposing defense is across their blue line and it makes entry difficult.

They really need to mix up the zone entry so be less predictable

It is historical passed down from father to son and mother to daughter - and it stems back to Vancouver being rejected in the 1967-68 round of expansion as well as being political.

I was a long-time Leafs fan (circa 1958) who was driven away by the antics of Harold Ballard and when Vancouver entered the NHL, that was all she wrote. At least I have fond memories of the glory years in the 1960's and I watched all four Leafs Stanley Cup victories.

Perhaps a review of some history is in order.

There is a historical basis (hockey wise) as well as a built-in distrust of Central Canada going back to BC's entry into Confederation - the whole Western Alienation mind set.

Historically there is good reason for Vancouver fans disliking the Leafs due to Stafford Smythe's deep-sixing the Canucks' entry to the NHL in 1967 with the help of Clarence Campbell when Vancouver rejected Smythe's attempts to build and control a new arena in Vancouver. He vowed to block any Vancouver entry to the NHL:

Back in the middle of 1964, Toronto Maple Leafs’ president Stafford Smythe, seeking new ways to increase his cash inflow, mused that he might, just might, consider building an NHL-sized arena in Vancouver, if Vancouver would grant him free prime property in the downtown area. Smythe and his assistant, Harold Ballard, came to Vancouver to promote his plan.

Reaction in the city was split down the middle. Rabid hockey fans felt that no concession was too great if it meant an NHL franchise. But others differed. Some people were turned off by Smythe’s patronizing attitude. Others felt that the granting of free land was a blatant give-away to eastern interests.

There were even rumors, never confirmed, that Smythe planned to build a hotel complex and a dog-racing track on the site of the proposed rink.

At any rate, Smythe’s proposal was put to the public and was rejected. Smarting with indignation, Smythe said that he doubted if Vancouver would ever get into the NHL in his lifetime.
From The History of Hockey in B.C. by Denny Boyd

It took David Molson of the Habs to intervene and overrule Campbell giving Vancouver its NHL franchise (along with Buffalo) in 1970. By that time Smythe had been ousted by John Basset as Leafs chairman in a power struggle that would ultimately see Harold Ballard oust Bassett several years later, was facing criminal charges and was ill (he would subsequently die in 1971).

It was not entirely altruistic on David Molson's part as fans in BC had organized quite an effective boycott targeting Molson beer and ESSO (major NHL sponsors at the time) over the denial of an NHL franchise.

From The History of Hockey in B.C. by Denny Boyd:

Vancouver’s reaction to the rejection and to Campbell’s words was one of boiling indignation. Hundreds of letters of protest were fired off to NHL headquarters. The sale of beer brewed by the family behind the Montreal Canadiens dropped sharply as did purchases of oil and gasoline bearing the name of the sponsor of Canadian NHL telecasts. Vancouver was a city spurned, and was acting accordingly.

The boycott was quite effective and David Molson (owned the Habs) basically told Campbell to pipe down about Vancouver and the BOG awarded franchises to Vancouver and Buffalo.

David Molson, a member of the NHL expansion committee, tempered the turn-down slightly when he said, “The league is committed to Vancouver. The next city, either through a new franchise or a franchise transfer, is Vancouver. If we expand again, it will have to be by two cities to facilitate scheduling. But when you have two weak sisters you have to be a little hesitant about going out and adding two unknowns.”

The weak sisters he was referring to were Oakland and Pittsburgh, both of them deep in early financial straits and neither of them drawing solid and consistent spectator support.

While David Molson’s announcement had been the first genuinely positive indication that the NHL wanted Vancouver as badly as Vancouver wanted the NHL, his promise was verbally negated by Campbell who, in a hasty moment, said, “Vancouver won’t be in the league this year or next. You can count on that.”

But the expansion committee, at the June, 1969 NHL meeting, partially provided a rebuttal to Campbell by announcing that the NHL would expand again in time for the 1970-71 season.

And NHL hockey would finally come to the Wet Coast.

So yes there is a lot of history behind Leaf angst in Vancouver. Nothing wrong with holding a grudge for many decades IMHO.

I just can't get into the Leafs Canucks rivalry. The last time we faced in a meaningful game was in the playoffs in 1994 and the likelihood of us ever playing in the playoffs again in the near future is pretty much non-existent.

I was one of the very few Leaf fans who was actually going for the Canucks in the stanley cup final last year, because of my hatred for Boston after the Kessel trade. After watching the finals though, it's hard to argue that Boston didn't deserve it. Thomas was a beast and the Sedins were no-shows.

Leafs jerseys in Vancouver: prior to the advent of Canucks Nation ™, Leafs fans filled the Coliseum and the new Arena when Toronto came to town.
Now Canucks fans do pretty much the same thing all over North America, but the resentment still lingers.

Now Canucks fans do pretty much the same thing all over North America, but the resentment still lingers.

Vancouverites do not like anything about Toronto, period. It's not just an anti-Leafs thing ;)

Hope that helps.

We still do. See ya saturday.

We still do. See ya saturday.

No doubt - I gather that some Canucks seasons ticket holders make good coin off of Leafs and Habs fans every year.

I should qualify that the resentment still lingers for some, but not all Canucks fans. Given the number of 'Nucks jerseys in Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal during our Eastern Canadian tour this season, it's a Pot, Kettle, Black situation now.

As was pointed out earlier in this thread, there is no logical basis for a rivalry between the 'Nucks and Leafs, so at least you will add to the "atmosphere" at Rogers on Saturday.

I'm guessing the number of people in Vancouver, outside of the groups where you have likely posted this a couple hundred times, that know this story can be counted with two hands.

Tomorrow night's game is one of the biggest ones on Vancouver's schedule for it's fanbase. They count down till the Leafs are in town, get ready to burn some jerseys, chant Leafs Suck.

That's one thing I like about the Alberta teams. Did you hear any LEAFS SUCK chats in either Calgary or Edmonton? I didn't. They have a respectful rivalry, they know it's a game where a HUGE fanbase comes into town and buys anywhere between 25 to 50 of the tickets. They realize it's not even two teams in the same conference. Yet, Vancouver spends lots of time pissing on the Leafs, throughout the season, but especially RIGHT before they come into town.

As a Canucks fan, I guess I'm in the minority as I don't dislike Toronto at all? I don't see what's to dislike about them...they basically just play a normal game of hockey...it's not like they try to gain an advantage by consistently trying to injure players boston style. I don't know what they put in boston's tap water but when I look at their posts there's usually lots of talk about maiming, hurting, and "if we can't win, let's at least see blood" kind of talk. Of course we have more than our share of idiots out here too....I guess it makes watching the games more interesting if you dislike your opponent to a certain degree. It's funny how feelings can change though. I remember when Detroit fans were upset when Bertuzzi would hit Chelios. Even as a Canucks fan I didn't like it as I don't enjoy seeing a bigger player take out a smaller player...now you have Detroit cheering for Bertuzzi....makes me wonder what would happen if Kesler, Burrows or the Sedins were traded to boston and we got a few players from them like Chara or Horton or Marchand or Lucic...holy smokes, that would suck and I'm sure the confused fans would be booing their own teams.

Two of the most major cities in Canada seem to absolutely despise eachother; people from Toronto ***** about those from BC, and those from BC ***** about those from Toronto. I wouldn't say it's jealousy as much as it is just some bad apples ruining the images of both fan bases/cities.

Hate to say this, but last nights game, means added pressure, in one out of two of our next games.

Hey guys good luck tomorrow, I will be at the game. family has had 4 seats since day 1, I only get to a few games a year now.

Basically been a toronto fan for nearly 50 years. It's interesting seeing the hate on from both Vcr and TO's younger fans.

The only thing I hated about TO was Ballard fzcking the team over in the 70's.

I would love to see a VCR vs TO SCF. You think the media overplays crap now ...

And both cities have a tough Stanley history ... leafs have been 43 years since they have been to the finals, Canucks have 0 banners. Would love to see those both change.

GO LEAFS GO! I used to be pretty neutral about the Canucks, moved there for a school co-op in early 2009, kinda expected to adopt them as my 2nd favourite team behind the leafs. That lasted about a few days once I learned how hated Toronto and Ontario is out there. Since then, they've elevated to my most-hated NHL team, although since I've moved back to Ontario last September, things have dropped, but I still hate to see the Leafs lose to the Canucks more than to the Sens or the Habs...

Big game tonight, 2 important points on the line (although 2 points = 2 points)

Reimer starting as per LWL. Not sure if that's been posted yet.

The fate is in the team's hands. Leafs just need to win and everything will sort itself out. We can't do anything about the scores in the other games. We need to win more games over the next 24 than Ott, Wash, Fla, NJ, Jets, etc! That's the bottom line

Teams below them are starting to breath down their necks for a playoff spot, and teams ahead are making the gap larger with each win.
