AHL Update Your Team - Prospects Progress

How are the prospects doing on your AHL team?

Coyotes are affiliated with Utah Grizzlies who are still winless in 8 games so far - although they have had a tough schedule, featuring doubles against Manchester, Milwaukee and Manitoba.

David Leneveu - started the season with an injury has played 4 games and starting to shine with a 43 out of 45 effort last night. Numbers are nothing special but quite a way above Pelletier's who is a pretty decent AHL goalie himself.

Nobody else can be said to be playing well.

Jeff Taffe is the leading scorer but only has 2 goals and is minus 11.

Keith Ballard has three assists but has not settled and is the second worst after Taffe with minus 8. In their defense they log the biggest minutes and terrible PPs have hurt those numbers.

Fredrik Sjostrom continues his weird disappearing act in the AHL, with only one point, he apparently finds the NHL easier to score in.

Kiel McLeod has the best +/- on the team and the best shooting pct which are encouraging signs of progress, unlike once-highly-touted Martin Podlesak who is benched.

Joe Callahan is probably the most unknown but is doing well in the circumstances.

Manitoba Moose

Canucks affiliate: 8-4-0 after 12 games.

Jason King has started off well with 12 goals and 17 points in 12 games. His linemate Peter Sarno although not much of an NHL prospect also has 17 points.

Ryan Kesler has added offence so far this year to his shut down game scoring 5 goals and 11 points in 12 games.

Kirill Koltsov has 2 goals and 8 points so far. Tomas Mojzis has 3 goals and 8 points as well.

The biggest surprise has been the play of defenceman Kevin Bieksa who on all accounts has played very well for the Moose and has a couple of assists so far.

There are a bunch of other guys doing well, but that is is for real prospects.

Alex Auld has struggled but began to find his game latley, he has a .301 gaa and a .899 sv%.

For the Sharks/Barons the big story has been out dominating Marcel Goc has been.... Top goaltending Prospect Dimitry Patzold has over taken Nolan Scheafer for the starting spot.

The Albany River Rats (NJ) are 5-3-1-1 so far, and some of the prospects have played very well.

The three leading scorers are all prospects; two are rookies:
Aaron Voros (rookie) has 11pts (7+4) in 10 games.
Aleksander Suglobov has 10 pts (4+6) in 8 games.
Zach Parise (rookie) has 9 pts (3+6) in 9 games.

Ari Ahonen is 3-0-0 with a 1.62 GAA and a .947 save %.
He just returned from a concussion; otherwise he would've played more.

Cam Janssen (also a rookie) leads the team in penalty minutes with 72, followed by Voros with 40.

The story for the dogs has been Yann Danis IMO.

Danis 7 GP 6W 1L 1.55 GAA .947 SV%

Leads the league in wins, 3rd for both GAA and save% and that's behind a not so good Bulldogs defense (Cτtι, Komisarek injured). The addition of Focht must have really helped though.

Locke and Plekanec are doing well too.

San Antonio Rampage (FLA) are 5-4-2-0

Going by HF's Prospect Criteria and omitting young players who are no longer eligible (such as Weiss and Bouwmeester) and solely going by what I've heard over the radio in almost all the Rampage games (bare with me this is a very young cast so there are a lot of players)...

Returning AHL players:

Greg Campbell - (3g-6a-9pts) in 10 games, leads all eligible prospects in points and had seen some minutes on the top line with Weiss and Kolnik before Horton was inserted into the lineup. Normally a winger, he has been getting some time playing at the center position as Keenan was contemplating playing him on the 4th line in Florida before the announcement of the NHL Lockout was made, so this may be his preparation to take over that role sometime in the near future.

Lukas Krajicek - (1g-7a-8pts) in 10 games, currently leads the team in +/- with a plus-6 rating. His role on the team is that of an offensive defenseman which he has been filling in quite well, leading all Rampage d-men (including Bouw) in pts, but defensively he is still giving up the occasional defensive lapses such as getting stripped of the puck, making poor decisions and clearing attempts. Lukas hasn't been all that physical either.

Petr Taticek - (2g-3a-5pts) in 11 games, lots of improvement in his game on both sides of the puck, isn't in the same crucial role as he was in last year now that players such as Weiss are on the team, so he may be benefitting a great deal from that. Jacques Martin had a 1-on-1 chat with Petr before the start of the AHL season so its possible that might have helped him with his confidence in some way.

Josh Olson - (1g-2a-3pts) in 8 games, Josh has been OK, but for the most part haven't noticed his name all that often. A little disappointing because there were expectations on Josh making the team as a regular in Florida before the announcement of the Lockout was made. Josh was getting plenty of ice time last season, but due to all the higher caliber players being added to the team because of the NHL Lockout, his ice time has diminished.

Filip Novak - (0g-1a-1pt) in 10 games, coming back after missing an entire season from the ankle injury Novak is a team worst minus-4, as of now he is definitely struggling on both ends of the ice and he was just made a healthy scratch last night.

Victor Uchevatov - (0g-0a-0pts) in 5 games, currently out with a broken left foot injury after taking a puck to the skate, his name kept coming up whenever the Rampage defense made a big hit along the boards and open ice. He was solid defensively in the games he played compared to the rest of the defensive corps.

Grant McNeill - (0g-1a-1pt) in 4 games, enforcer for the Rampage has been in and out of the lineup and has collected a total of 16 PIMS in the season so far (Stephen Baby and Brandon Sugden are on his fight card)

Greg Jacina - (5g-3a-8pts) in 11 games, IMO the biggest surprise on the team considering he was just an ECHL callup whenever a Rampage forward was injured or someone was called up to the Panthers last season. Hes been given loads of ice time and responsibilities both on the PP (sometimes plays on the point) and the PK.

AHL Rookies:

Nathan Horton - (1g-0a-1pt) in 4 games, Nathan is still learning the ropes on becoming a powerforward, hes been driving hard to the net and has taken, as well as given, a lot of physical punishment so far in the AHL. The team itself seems to be playing a lot better overall since his insertion to the lineup.

Kamil Kreps - (1g-2a-3pts) in 11 games, Kamil is having a decent rookie season, playing well at both ends of the ice, so far hes been very creative at making something out of nothing for himself and his linemates.

Rob Globke - (1g-1a-2pts) in 9 games, up until last night Rob had been undisciplined and invisible thoughout most of the regular season games, but like Josh Olson, that may be due to having limited ice time in favor of Rampage vets like Kolnik, Beaudoin, Jardine and Healey as well as Horton getting a lot of time on the top line.

Lou Dickenson - (0g-0a-0pts) in 9 games, yes this is the same Dickenson from the reality tv show "Making the Cut" that has been airing in Canada, Lou has been mostly used in a defensive checking line role and getting time on the PK. He had a great preseason notching 2 shorthanded goals and 2 assists for 4 pts in 4 games, but as you can see by his stats what happens in preseason stays in preseason. ;)

I think it was a overtime loss...

-Tomas Plekanec is doing great with 5g-3a
-Marc-Andre Thinel(rookie) have 2g-6a(leading scorer with Plekanec)
-Corey Locke(rookie) impress with his 3g-4a
-Andrei Kostitsyn(rookie) don't have much ice-time and have 2g-1a
-Chris Higgins is strugling offensively with 3g-2a but he play a great two way game

Overall, the team don't score many goals but they have so much talent in the team!

Thinel is not a rookie, he's in his 4th season in the AHL, although he's always played on the lower lines with Quebec and Hamilton, I think he played a regular shift with Utah. He's played around 140 AHL games.

Plekanec has 10 pts in 12 games to lead Hamilton including tonights 2 pts so far.

Kostitsyn with his 3rd goal.

I can only say point value, I haven't had the time to see the games live :(

But point wise, not so good. But once again Harding goes unherald...His win, loss aside, he is doing pretty damn good for a team not putting up points. He was rocky at first but seems to have steadied out.

Harding, Josh 9 GP, 3 wins, 4 losses, 1 SOL, 2 SO, 1.89 GAA and a .931 SV%, not really shabby...

As for the rest:

Bouchard, Pierre- Marc 11 GP, 3 goals, 7 assists 10 points

Foy, Matt 11 GP 2 goals, 4 assists for 6 points

Lets not just post stats. Those numbers for Milwaukee at the top are unreadable and everyone knows how to look them up anyway.

Just say how the notable prospects are doing, how they are playing if you have an update. Are they struggling in the AHL more than expected? Dominating? Erratic? What role do they have? etc

Albany is 5, 5, 1, 1 after a hot start....mainly because they played three stright games for the past two weekends.

Aaron Voros - Surprised many getting off to a torrid start to the season. Voros leads the Rats in shots and goals. He has 12 points (7 goals) in 12 games. Thats good for tops in the AHL for rookies. With those 12 points are 42 PIM.

Aleksander Suglobov - He also got off to a fast start but an injury has really slowed him down. He had 9 points in his first 5 games but then was injured and since has only added 1 point in his last 5. Suglobov still is good for 10 points in 11 games (4 goals). He is a poor -5 though.

Zach Parise - Zach has had points in 9 of his first 11 games showing a consistant effort on the ice. Parise has yet to have a bad game. He has 10 points in 11 games while showing an effort to play good two way hockey.

Ari Ahonen - Has been no less then amazing so far. The past few games where Albany were extremely outplayed Ahonen has gotten them a win and gave them a chance for a win in the other. His 3 - 1 record, 1.98GAA and .941 SV% puts him near top in terms of goaltenders so far in the AHL.

Since no one has tried to touch them, here is my view on each player so far...

Balej – started off slow but has been impressive in his last three games. Has great hands and good stick handling ability but at times can be overly flashy. Put up a 3 point night in his last outing, including a breakaway goal and is 3-6-9 +6 for the year

Moore – centering the first line and has been impressive at both ends of the ice. Tied for the team lead in points and has been solid all year 2-7-9 +7

Wiseman – second on the team in shots. Has had probably more scoring opportunities than anyone else on the team but still can’t find the back of the net as often as he should. Needs to work on finishing chances. Tied for the team lead in goals 3-2-5 +6

Giroux – drives to the net well and not afraid to use his body. I think he still needs to bulk up a little but that’s just my opinion. Does not dominate any aspect of the game but has played solid all around so far. 3-1-4 +3

Kondratiev – started the year a little slow and at times looked lost on the ice but has quickly come around to play solidly in the defensive end, playing more physical than his size would suggest while throwing in 4 points on the offensive end. Will be back in Russia at month end 1-3-4 +3

Lampman – another one of those quiet guys that just gets the job done. Not shooting as much as he perhaps should but solid in the defensive end 2-0-2 +4

Betts – until his injury he was a stud on the penalty kill. Not afraid to get down to block shots and is a pest on the forechecking. Injuring his shoulder again is very concerning 1-1-2 +2

Hollweg – glad to see him playing a physical game after his head injury. Should get more ice time with Betts, Hamilton, Murray and Gillies all out. 1-1-2 +1

Tyutin – team leader in shots and has played well all around. Clearly he is the best player on our defense but at times seems bored. He might be back in Russia at month end (NY Times article). He and Kondratiev play very well together 0-1-1 +4

Pock – played two games since coming back from an injury so can comment more later on 0-0-0 +1

Non-HF prospect notes:
Ulmer – great on faceoffs and has been driving to the net. Provides solid vet leadership for the team 0-5-5 +2

Weller – good guy finally being rewarded for it. Listed as a defensemen but has played forward in most of the games. Scored all three of his goals in the past 2 games 3-0-3 +6

Nycholat – another vet coming through and complimenting Lampman on our second defensive pairing 1-2-3 +3

Ortmeyer – energy guy and much like Betts, has been great short handed. I wish he could work on his offensive side of the game a bit but its still early on. 1-0-1 +3

Gillies – played really well with Cuthbert and Weller on the fourth line prior to his injury. Leads the team in PIMs 0-1-1 +3 50 PIMs

Grenier – simply a beast when it comes to fighting and I would not want to face him. Out with a broken thumb 0-1-1 31 PIMs

MacMillan - should be a good influence on some of the younger defensemen on the team 1-0-1 +6

LaBarbera – obviously benefiting from solid defense infront of him but has made a ton of key saves when he had to 6-0 0.82 GAA .971 Save %

Valiquette – has played very well so far. Uses his huge frame to his benefit but expect him to get bounced out when Blackburn returns 3-0 1.33 GAA .948 save %

How about Murray? How's he doing this year?

He's out with a broken thumb. He should be back pretty soon though. I am guessing a week or two. He got hurt in preseason so has not touched the ice during the regular season yet.

The one good thing about the injury was it was to his hand so his legs should be in game shape, or one would hope.

True.

That's too bad. I was looking forward to seeing him tonight on MSG. Probably the only Wolfpack game I'll see this year. :(

Thanks! I'll write this down. I actually just checked my Tivo schedule last night, and had forgotten I had the Springfield game set to go as well.

Oh, by the way, you're going down on the 11th ;)

I know I'm not the only one who missed that US National Anthem in the Hartford game. LOL!

He seemed to be doing an alright job until the very end when it sounded like his voice cracked or something. This is just another reason why the lockout needs to end!!

Furey was solid, solid D man. He's no too big, but he had a nice hip check. He was willing to defend teammates, I remember in that Binghamton brawl game, during the second brawl, he just dove right in there, grabbed someone and started going at it. Very nice to see. 1st on the team in plus minus, 3rd in D scoring. I was sorry to see him go, but there was no room for him this year.

Believe it's not much better with the regular season. You'd think they'd be able to find someone with some talent in LA.
