With a bye in week 10 and a gimme game in week 11 vs. Oakland, San Diego could go a long way in getting into the playoffs with a victory at home vs. New Orleans.

Sadly, I think you are right.

Vikes offense misses Moss badly. They are one of the top-2 in the league with him, middle-of-the-road without him.

Moore isn't as much of a loss as both Smith and Bennett are back (Smith from suspection; Bennett to full health). For the Vikes to have a chance, they are going to have to manage the game and the clock. Use their big offensive line to pound the Colts small defense. Let Bennett and Smith move the ball methodically down field. In short, keep it from becoming a shoot-out. I don't think it is an impossible game to win, just a very tough one. Vikes get a good ground game going and nab some INTs, they can pull it off.

the vikings do this every season

they start out on fire, and then fade away when teams start prearing for the play-offs on them. Last year it was week 7.. This year it was week 7.

I know the moss injury is a big factor in this, but this isnt anything new. They need to learn to start a season and Finish a season.

Not so fast! The Saints play to the level of their competition...which in this case might be a good thing for New Orleans.

They need a defense that can match their talent on the offensive side of scrimmage.

I'd be shocked if Manning didn't just shread the Vikes defense for some serious yardage. Although if Moss was playing, both teams would be about even.

I predict that the Lions will struggle and lose against a Washingtion team they should beat. Washington has one of the better defenses and Detroit's running game is still suspect.

You know your defense sucks when the Bucs have no problem with you.

Also, Eddie Kennison caught a ball from Green and broke through the TB defense but was hit 10 yards from the endzone by Dwight Smith fumbled the ball into the endzone, was picked up by Brian Kelly and returned 30 yards.

It's not the RB's it's the O-line.

Also the Eagles have been weak against the run for a few years now, it has only really cost them in the NFC Championship game against St. Louis 3 years ago.

The problem here for the Eagles IMO all stems from the defense. Not only can't they stop the run, but they just can't make a big stop. They've had some big sacks on Big Ben, but then the Steelers are able to get the first downs. The Steelers have possessed the ball for the majority of the game, which means the defense is fresh for the Eagles offense. And when the Steelers defense is fresh, they are much better. Over the past two years when the Steelers were passing, even passing well, the offense didn't have much time of possession, and the defense got beat. Now that the Steelers are getting their defense more rest, the defense is returning to being pretty dominant.

And as I'm talking, Dawkins picks Roethlisberger off. I don't really know what that throw was about, but we'll see of the Steelers D can hold Philly with about 3 and a half minutes in the half.

Egad! Burress just had a sure TD and dropped the ball somehow. :dunno:

Made the catch and tried to carry it with one hand and fumbled it out of bounds around the 20 of the Eagles.

I don't want to get too excited, but with a win today I guess the Steelers will be on top of the NFL.

DJ Spinoza
11-07-2004, 01:55 PM
Just as it looked like Philly was going to get momentum, after Burress dropping a pass, holding the Steelers to a FG attempt, and Reed missing it, Farrior gets an interception and the Steelers are pressing again.

Sheesh. I thought McNabb might struggle a little, and now I'm really glad I started Brees instead of him.

I dont think he will be the franchise player for the Bucs, but he'll be a top player on the team for years down the road.

I'm glad the 49ers are playing well against the Seahawks today. Although they should be after getting embarassed in week 3 34-0. Maybe I like to take chances too much, but I disagree with Ericksson kicking a FG with 7 seconds left instead of taking one last shot at a TD on 3rd and goal. I think an upset can happen if they can hold down Seattle's defense.

Drew Brees + Antonio Gates = :handclap:

8 TD's for Gates so far this year, that's second among all receivers (T.O. has 9, Moss also has 8) and he's a TE. Oh yeah and coming into today 13th in receiving yardage so it's not like they only use him in goal line situations. Now if only I had grabbed him for my fantasy team.

So does Gates deserve to be mentioned yet among guys like Gonzo? What about Heap and Shockey? McMicheal? Winslow? Where does he rank among TEs in the league right now? My own opinion in biased because Im a Charger fan, but I would put him top-5 for sure right now, top-3 if he continues his strong play for the rest of the year, maybe even #2 behind Gonzalez.

Hockeyfan02
11-07-2004, 05:57 PM
Winslow for one does not deserve mention among the top TEs until he proves something on the field. Gates is emerging as a top 5 TE in the league in only his 2nd year and might become even better than Gonzalez in his prime if he continues to have strong years like this one.

Steelers line is good, but not the best IMO.

Chiefs are, at worst, top-2.

Baltimore is, at worst, top-2.

Packers come in with a phenominal group of 6-7 (starters and top BUs).

Then you have Denver, Seattle, Philly and New England who are of the same caliber as the Steelers.

Bettis may be headed for the HOF, but he is a marginal back today. He may be the slowest back in the NFL. His rushing yardage had as much to do with who he was facing as it did his ability. Bettis would be hard pressed to start anywhere in the NFL. For at least half the team, he would have a tough time being the top back-up.

So does Gates deserve to be mentioned yet among guys like Gonzo? Where does he rank among TEs in the league right now?
Just to answer my own question, I found this in Peter King's Monday Morning QB this morning:

"I think -- and I only want to tantalize you, not give it all away -- that one of the biggest surprises of SI's Midseason All-Pro Team has to do with the choice of the 16 NFL scouts/pro personnel directors/GMs at tight end. And let's just say the possible Hall of Famer from the AFC West will be disappointed at the balloting, and the former Mid-American Conference basketball player from the AFC West will be thrilled. It's an interesting team. Check it out this week in the magazine."

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writers/peter_king/11/08/king.mmqb/index.html

No names, but it seems obvious he's referring to Antonio Gates making the team over Tony Gonzalez. If anyone actually gets the magazine Id be interesting in reading what they have to say about all the players, not just the TE position.

And yes, I realize that Gonzalez is a potential HOF'er and Gates has only had one half of a great season so far. He'll need to keep it up for a while in order to be considered on par with Gonzo. So dont go jumping all over me.

Oh yeah and some interesting stuff about Brees in there as well. King believes the Chargers will slap Brees with the franchise tag in the off-season which would prevent him from becoming a free agent and force someone to trade for him, likely for a high 2nd or possibly 1st round pick. That would give the Chargers 3 1sts next draft (they also have the Giant's). He also doesnt dismiss the possibility that the Chargers might keep Brees. What a great time to be a SuperChargers fan.

one coach once commented that one of the main differences between a mediocre rb and a good rb is that the good one will get you that extra yard or two every play. Bettis continued to do tha, not to mention still move his legs pretty good to dodge. he's not what he used to be, but he's still got some of it. i think it's a little much to say he wouldnt be able to start anywhere.
Bettis played great because it's likely his only start of the year. The Steelers needed everything he had in the well for one game, and he gave it to them. He's not an everyday starter in this league anymore, but his situation in Pittsburgh is perfect for him. Bettis is the Steeler's version of Moe Williams now, which isn't a bad thing.

Anybody see Aaron Brooks' backwards pass to his offensive lineman? Lost him 20-25 yards.

Lucky for him he plays for an idiot.

Yeah I saw that on the highlights. One of the funniest plays I've seen this year (in the sense that it makes you shake your head wondering "what in the world was he thinking?"), right up there with the Jake Plummer left handed interception.

Wow...Ray Lewis gets away with some nice pass interference in the endzone, leading to an INT returned for a TD by Ed Reed.

While I don't think he interfered on that particular play, Lewis does get away with a lot of crap. I'm just thankful we wasn't miked-up for the 500th straight telecast...

Is it safe to say the Steelers are the best team in the NFL now?

No, just really good at home.

while i dont think anyone can say Bettis is what he used to be, i think if really needed to be a starter he could be. granted he would be pretty worn down by the end, and may not have that great a year (probably more likely than not), but he could do it.

If Bettis started the whole year, you'd be seeing a 2003 Eddie George-like situation, and even then it's no safe bet that Bettis would stay healthy the whole year. He's not the player he was, and he's not an every day starter. He's a situational short yardage/red zone back, and he's doing an extraordinary job of it.

KC, Seattle, Chicago, and Baltimore (with Ogden) all have better O-lines than P-Burgh.

I saw live the play with Jake Plummer, so I laughed during 3 days..

:lol That was hillarious. Easily one of the top bloopers of the year. I can understand him trying to avoid taking a sack, but in that situation you just gotta take a sack.

Thats a pretty bold statement by King. Steelers have been the best team of the first half, but thats no reason to include them as one of the best teams of the last 20 years yet. Two games doesnt make a season, even as impressive theyve looked the last two weeks beating two of the best teams in the league.

That's IMO debatable.
Pittsburgh has a very tight unit. It's not only about the individuals, but as a unit, they're downright fantastic.
Keep in mind that the Steelers don't mix up a lot. They run A LOT. In the Eagles game, it was obvious they'd run all day, no matter what. And the defensive line STILL couldn't stop them.
I believe only KC and Baltimore can rival the Steelers' O line as a unit.

This sums up week 9 pretty nicely...

'Twas Sunday the 7th & all throughout Philly,
The fans were watching their Eagles on TV look silly;
The Eagle fans watched and thought "oh how absurd",
As they watched Hines Ward flap his arms like a bird;
But it was only 7-0 and there was no reason to worry,
With Donovan and T.O., this game would be tied in a hurry;
Big Ben throws to Burress, more runs by the Bus,
The Birds Fans were wondering what's happened to us;
This kids just a rookie, how can this happen,
Ward in the endzone again- his arms are flapping;
The Steelers took over and moved it with ease,
Bettis was running through the D like it was swiss cheese;
We are 7-0 and how could this be?
But the Eagles were beaten 27 to 3;
We knew this was a good team to have to confront,
But holy hell, the Steelers didn't even punt!
