Dallas is not affiliated w/ Houston. As far as I know they are affiliated w/ Hamilton along w/ the Canadiens.

I believe you are right. Both the Stars and Flames will have single affiliations next year as well.

Calgary will be putting it's team in Omaha, and I dont quite remember where Dallas' team is going. Des Moines?

Dallas is affiliated with both Hamilton and Houston this year. We'll have our own team in Des Moines, Iowa next year however.

How many of these teams are owned by their NHL affiliates in the way that St. John's is owned by Toronto?

Anyone know if they're re-aligning again next year?

With three teams new in the west and only one comin from the east, I would think that Rochester and Syracuse would switch conferences. Minus Cincinatti, that would be a 15w-14e conference alignment I believe. If Utah moves to Orlando, as has been speculated, then it would be 14w-15e.

If Orlando becomes a new member of the AHL, travel won't be as expensive as many believe, as there are many major airports in the northeast that offer one-way, non-stop tix to Orlando for $125 or less, and if some of the teams don't live near a major hub, then they can schedule a single game at a major hub and fly to Florida the next day.

I dont hear much about the AHL here but one rumor was floating around is that the AHL is talking to San Diego about moving their team up to the AHL. I dont know if this is true however.

It seems like the AHL might be lookin to move away from bein a bus league to bein more of a second tier, major markey league. They may be lookin for cities that can draw upwards of 8,000 to 10,000 regularly hopin the added revenue generated could pay for transportation. They might end up akin the same mistake the IHL did, unless they are heavily subsidized by the NHL, who can't really afford to do that presently.

Worcester is now out of the AHL replaced with the Peoria Rivermen. No word yet on who the Blues ECHL affiliate will be.

Here's an AHL/NHL affiliations map I've been working on...be patient, its a big file and takes a while to load. Also make sure it's at 100% not fit to window or else it might be blurry.

http://img145.echo.cx/img145/3551/bighockeymap1zo.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

Will update as things change (last update was Edmonton going into deep-freeze for the up-coming season).

It really drives home in a visual manner just how regionalized the AHL is. The additions of Peoria, Des Moines, and Omaha really bring a new midwestern market into the picture but with Utah and Edmonton out of commision, there is nothing out West. Obviously, there are logistical reasons for this but a part of me misses some of the old IHL rivalries.

Also of note, from a geographic standpoint, two of the Western most NHL franchises (Los Angeles, Anaheim) now how two of the Easternmost AHL franchises (Manchester, Portland) as their affiliates. Some of their farmhands really rake in (or will in Anaheim's case) the frequent flyer miles.

I never truly understood why LA has their affiliate in New Hampshire. Bad location if they needed an emergency callup. 3 hour flight and jet lag for the player. Now Anaheim will have Portland. NOt sure if it was a move they wanted to make or a desperation to have some sort of AHL affiliate.

Manchester is a good city to have AHL hockey in, new arena and great fans. I do understand that it doesn't make sense geographically, but it makes sense as far as travel for the AHL goes.....

The AHL website's affiliate map is from this past season...

I believe that this list (as of now) is accurate.

Albany - NJ
Binghamton - Ottawa
Bridgeport - NY Islanders
Chicago - Atlanta
Cleveland - San Jose
Grand Rapids - Detroit
Hamilton - Montreal (could possibly be a split with Edmonton in the end)
Hartford - NY Rangers
Hershey - Washington
Houston - Minnesota
Iowa - Dallas
Lowell - Carolina and Colorado
Manchester - Los Angeles
Manitoba - Vancouver
Milwaukee - Nashville
Norfolk - Chicago
Omaha - Calgary
Peoria - St Louis
Philadelphia - Philadelphia
Portland - Anaheim
Providence - Boston
Rochester - Buffalo
San Antonio - Florida (for now, reports are that this will change to Phoenix)
Springfield - Tampa
Syracuse - Columbus
Toronto - Toronto (could possibly be a split with Florida)
WB/S - Pittsburgh

thanks alot. I saw the map, but was sure about it. The only reason i'm asking is because some subforums for a different forum (AHL team is a subforum to the NHL team) and due to changes, some teams were obsolete.

Thanks, and I appreciate it.

There is no way the Toronto Maple Leaf Organization would share the Marlies with Florida. Anyone know which team will be associated with Florida next year?

3 hour flight from Manchester to LA....In what, a F-16?

One of the prime reasons Anaheim gave for moving their affiliate to Portland was the proximity of so many other AHL teams. It costs less to run a season when your travel and overnight costs are cut significantly. With the NHL having a 23 person roster, you don't have an immediate need for a callup, so the closeness of the affiliate isn't that big a deal.
