I have come down to the Logitech Z5300 5.1 speakers which is $199cdn now. 280 watts.

or

Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 speakers. About same watts and same price. Ranked the best 2.1 speaker set. I owned these before and yes they do rock. But very pricey and when I tried cranking it, the sub went out...but I think I might of just had a bad set.

But which would you get? Music, movies, games.

Same price for 2.1 speakers vs 5.1 But here's the thing, I only have a 2 channel sound card as I use a laptop, so would getting 5.1 be a waste?

Yes klipsch are good for clarity especially, but when I had mine about 6 months ago the sub kept going out at high volumes. Not even that high, like 35% of speaker volume. No way subs should go out that easy.

But I read so many amazing reviews ont he Logitechs. But only thing is, would 5.1 speakers even work with my laptop?

Thumbs down to logitech.

Everything I've had logitech worked great for about a year, then things would start breaking. For my speakers, the volume control was crackly and didn't work right, and the speakers would go in and out if you nudged the sub. I would stay away.

I don't know much about these speakers but what annoy me is the way the subwoofer have too much presence. It sound great at first hearing but at long term having from 30 - 45% of the sound in sub is just annoying. This is not the way music should be heard, in my point of view.

So my advice is to check that out. Most sellers in display will try to impress the customer with a boost of bass subwoofer. It's all wrong. A good clean sound is the best, long term saying.

I have the Logitech Z-5300's and I'd give them a 9/10. The sub is extremely powerful but you can adjust its output (definately lower it from the factory settings). I've used them on my old computer which had a bad sound card and the audio was still very good.

My yamaha 5.1 system for my computer just bought it, so just do what I did.... by a cheap receiver and some speakers and voila, a system that will spank the computer-speakers-in-a-box.

I have the original Klipsch 4 speaker set (before the 4.1s) and they are awesome. I can't imagine any computer speakers being better than klipsch.

Make sure the speakers sit flat on your desk.

And for the love of god, don't poke the speakers with a fork.

I was lookin to buy today but my net was down haha, so tommorow it is.

Both are same price. Klipsch indeed will sound alot better, but the question is, why was the sub on the one I had going out, meaning distorting? And only at 35%, if that! Good quality subs should be able to go at full without distortion. I wonder if I had a dud.

no need for it now. I have 2 channel on my laptop haha, so eventually i would have to get a external USB 5.1 sound card, audigy by creative, but costs $140 :(

I dont really need 5.1 for music. Thats what I will mainly be using it for.

Hows the clarity and treble definition? Im sure klipsch has them beat on this. I normally only buy companies who just make speakers. But logitech z560's just blew me away. Heard Z5300 isnt as powerful though.

hahaha thanks dog, I just bought a pair of Panasonic XBS earphones today for $25. Odd how it is, earphones you will easily get just as good sound quality than any speaker, cause its in the ear so you can pick up all tones more easily.

The Z-5300's have some extremely loud decible capabilities. You won't lack any power my friend. I think you have a point that the Klipsch speakers will have more crystal clear audio at low-mid level. Don't worry, the Z-5300's get by fine with mid ranges as well. But then again you'd have to make sure your laptop is convertible with the plugs.
