Feel free to discuss some of your major injuries that you have had during your career and life as a whole.

Myself, I have torn my quad twice, one in a game and one outside on the ice as a kid. Have suffered several arm injuries as well as ankle injuries, but those two didnt slow me down one bit on playing the best sport on earth.. hockey!

What were you'rs and how did they happen?

Nothing that bad. I split my lip and lost a tooth after taking a stick to the face once, but that's about it other than the usual minor stuff (small cuts, bruises, etc...).

Edit: That's why I think it's a good idea to ALWAYS wear a full cage now. Other people can try to look cool like the pros all they want. I'll keep the rest of my teeth in my head, thanks.

Meh...

Couple of concussions (still a dozen behind Lindros)
Bum right knee
Bum back for half a season
Bum elbow for a quarter a season

Nothing that's stayed with me, aside from the knee.

I had to quit because of the knee injury. Almost all ligaments were broken or torn. It happened when there was traffic in front of the net (I was playing goalie) and two players fell straight on to my leg and my knee got twisted badly. It happened six years ago and I've had three operations now, still it isn't good as new.

Once I had puck straight to my head when my mask fell off. I had a concussion and fifteen stitches.

It really scares me whenever I go on eBay, and there's a nice set of goalie gear up for auction.........and the seller attaches a story about how he blew out his knee and thus cannot play anymore. It's like looking into a time machine.

Torn cartilege in a knee (before "the scope", out for a season)
Broken nose (3 times from hockey, once in a car accident)
separated shoulder (hurt for a year afterward)
broken ribs (couldn't play for 6 weeks)
lots of stitches in the face (even with a half-shield)

-plus some other injuries that were NOT from hockey, but bother me when I play.

I'm a mess.

I got hit once that nearly took away my eyesight in my left eye. I can't really explain it other than the hit cause some 'pebbles' to block the blood flow in my retina...so therefore I have lost all periphal vision in my eye. It destroyed my hockey career in the making..;) seriously though it sucks.

Other than that I have had a couple serious concussions and some back problems after i got hit from behind.

Torn MCL back in June, still bugs the hell out of me... :madfire:

I tore my MCL (I think the MCL is the inside one) about 5 years. It wasnt *really* torn, just strained I think. I had a hard time walking for about a week, but I was back on the ice (in rough shape, mind you) in about 6 weeks.

Two years ago I re-strained it, it bothered me for the whole winter.

Here's hoping that it stays away this time.

badly pulled some muscles on my left arm shooting off balance

sprained my foot

pulled some tendons in my foot playing road hockey while i was playing goal. (stood on one foot and finished the game in a tough 10-9 loss.. we were down 9-0 before i got hurt and i swear to god ive never plaeyd better then after i got hurt but it was straight to the hospital for xrays after)

It's funny, of all the injuries I've had, none came from hockey. However the ones that kept me out of hockey for a bit were:
Torn Labrum in my left shoulder, had to be reconstructed
4 concussions
Torn Quad
Strained/Pulled hamstring, groin, calf
Multiple sprained ankles.

well, 2 years ago i suffered my 1st concussion (missed 2 weeks, AA midget hockey ), last season i suffered 2 more concussions (missed 2 weeks and 3 weeks, AA midget hockey) and this year, at the end of november i suffered my 4th, and so far final concussion (out 2-3months, High School hockey), and this one was pretty serious, the doctor said i cant play contact hockey 'til feb, but i've been playing old timers for about 2 weeks now, shhhhhh, dont tell my doctor :)

plus a few random pulled muscles (mostly groin) over the years

Broken collarbone, finger, chipped tailbone (I broke my a$$).

My knee-caps(Patella) have no groove so they dislocate pretty easily, probably about 5 or 6 times during games throughout the years.
Torn a few tendons in my shoulder, pulled quads and groin muscles.

Mild concussion.

Worst: Broken Femur (Thigh bone). FIRST DAY OF SUMMER VACATION after 8th grade. In traction in the hospital for 6 weeks (i.e. entire summer vacation) body cast for 6 more weeks. About a yr for a full recovery.

Wrapped my knee around a post and strained it, a compound fracture of my left (catching) wrist after I fell on it funny, a somewhat tweaky back and my right ankle is a little weaker than my left when I seriously rolled over on it about 3 years ago.

Nothing really super serious compared to some of the more jinxed people on here (knock on wood) but a lot of the mistakes of my youth are making themselves known to me as I get older and are especially noticeable on mornings after I play.

hyperextended both wrists and elbows - i think i have tennis elbow in both now. numerous knee sprains including a bout with traumatic bursitus in my right knee, which has been drained a couple of times. sprained one ankle 3/4 times, minor fracture to the other. back soreness for about ten years now, a bad groin pull a couple of years ago. broke my nose 2/3 times. three cuts on my face that required stiches, plus chipped teeth. black eyes and plenty of nasty bruises and marks on arms and stomach. i lost my voice from a stick in the throat, and its never come back fully, i lose my voice really quickly if i talk loud (never could sing anyway). oh, and one bad concussion, followed by a couple of minor ones. all playing hockey. im 33 though - and ive been playing since i was five, so i think ive been pretty lucky. im playing tonight and tomorrow - hopefully i stay lucky a few more games. ;)

My entire career, outside of nagging little injuries, I have only been cut three times that required stitches. Once over each eye and once on the nose (which also was broken as a result). Other than that no major injuries, breaks, tears, etc.

I'll go knock on some wood now.

my team is playing its last three games of the regular season and will make the playoffs for the first time in four years(!)
[knock wood] i'm in the best shape of my life; other than some nagging pain in my neck and upper back, i feel pretty good for this point of the season...i still wrap up both knees pretty good (ruptured the MCL in my left knee a couple years back) but i feel strong as ever (it's all the extra movement from reffing and from playing basketball, too, i get at least 4-5 days a week of rigorous cardio).
a big part of staying injury-free is about proper conditioning... watch, i'll end up getting my ass in a sling this weekend :shakehead

i got my first injury 2 weeks ago, a mild concussion. i pivoted backwards at the blueline to hit a hit along the boards, leaned my body forward and nailed him, but my skates kept going backward and i slid backwards. so i fell into the ice, cage first, with all my body weight on my head. everything went black for a second, then i heard a ringing, and everything got brighter. i played one more shift after that but then the blurred vision was affecting me so i sat out the rest of the game then got it checked out after. was only out a week, missed one practice.

1996 I damaged the cartilage in my left knee playing some basketball, didn't effect my hockey game at all.

1999 blew out my ACL in a league playoff game when an opponent cought my skate with his stick.

2001 blew out my MCL in a skiing accident (boot wasn't attached to the ski correctly).

basically, I'd need complete reconstructive surgery done on my left knee if I were to take the ice again.

Probably the most serious injury I had happened in my first year playing Midget hockey. I skated into the corner to pick up a dump-in and thought I had nobody on me (forgot to take a look behind me when I went in). Just as I got rid of the puck I got blindsided (was almost from behind, but not quite). The hit left me without feeling from the neck down for about 30 or 40 seconds. Was pretty scary but I managed to stay pretty calm through the whole thing.

I also sprained ligaments in my right knee and ruptured a tendon in my foot, but those injuries were from playing baseball.

I've never had a serious injury thats prevented me from playing outside of a jammed wrist, creaky knees, and some back issues. I'll play though anything, but i've never felt truely truely truely breaking intense pain. I've dislocated my knee once, but it didn't prevent me from putting it back and playing.

Back when i use to play once or twice every weak my knees are always permanently bruised and purple, and i somewhat feel effects still. Sometimes when i'm walking my knees randomly buckle and fall out, this happens at least once or twice a day.

They like...er this is hard to explain. I'll just be walking and they'll fall out from under me. Like somebody kicked my kness out from under me. Its weird. I don't even play butterfly, i play standup/hybrid more so towards standup. I guess i play a lot like cujo/vokoun/brodeur so its weird. I'm never down on both knees at the same time either so that makes it more bizarre, meh.

Colles' fracture of my right wrist. Required a plate and two screws. That was two years ago. Fortunately *knock on wood* it's my only hockey injury. But it still bothers me.

Funny thing is, I play hockey with the surgeon who repaired it.

Had huge bone calasses on both ankles from overtraining. In surgery they had to chisel off significant bone growth without wrecking my natural anatomy. I was in a wheelchair for almost a month. Couldn't properly plantar-flex or dorsi-flex either foot for 2 months and it was a rough ordeal. Never made it back to the game full time and missed out on some big opportunities. Worked out in the end as I went to school and now I know what "plantar-flex" and "dosi-flex" mean!

Moral of story: Don't overtrain. Listen to doctor, listen to body. When you start to bleed, take a day off.

Sports & other injuries over the years...

several broken fingers (some fingers more than once)
broken arm
broken foot
torn knee ligaments (the worst injury)
disc problems lower back
sprained ankle (took a year to heal fully)
nerve damage (shoulder, another very slow to heal injury)

the scariest cut I've had was taking off my skates after a skate on the Rideau Canal. I tend to wear two pair of socks and that can make the skates hard to pull off. Slashed my wrist pulling one off, ever so slightly but it knicked the vein. Fortunately not seriously, but scary none the less.

Beyond that I've been the picture of health. :)

these are from soccer but whatever

Both ankles: Torn ligaments, with tendons snapped off...won't ever heal, seem to always hurt...Whenever I move my feet the ligaments move freely and make loud cracking sounds

Left Knee: Not sure what I did to this...but it seems to bend inwards if that makes sense, and just hurts from time to time.

Right Hip: Pops in and out, from time to time

Head: Couple concussions

common back pain/spine pressure,
worst was during a warmup a guy on the other team fell and slid into me from behind, so I had an unprepared fall, breaking my collarbone...had to wear a figure eight brace for a few months...bone over bone...healed fine and was back playing at 80% in about 10 weeks....guys still bug me about that...
after it happened, shock set in, because I was suppose to start the game but my shoulder was sore, so I went to the bench and started streching it...then I took my glove off and felt around and could clearly feel the bone was broke in two...then I went white and told the guys I was done for the night....lol

Oh yeah, tip for avoiding broken collarbones, make sure the face mask you're wearing is fitted properly for the helmet, I quite sure now that mine wasn't and is what actually snapped my collarbone....unless you want to have to dry one side of your body off with a hairdryer for a month...lol

worst injury in hocket was a slap shot to the throat when I was playing pee wee hockey years ago. Worst sports injury was dislocating both knees in practice one night (by an a**hole team mate) when I was wrestling in high school.
