Computer Issues

This morning I turned on my computer, monitor and speakers as usual. A little while later, I walked by my computer and noticed it had finished booting up, as I could see my desktop up on the screen.

Within minutes I started hearing this siren sound and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I later realized that my computer was making this noise so, naturally, I'm like WTF?? Anyways, when I got to it, the screen had the orange light on, the computer had the green light on (so it had power) and the fan was going, but nothing was being put on the screen. I hit a few keys and moved my mouse to get it out of 'sleep mode', but no dice. So I was stuck giving it a hard re-boot.

Now when I press the power button, the green light comes on, but the Fan does not. :dunno:

Obviously this is a Power Supply issue. Is there anything I can try myself before taking it into an expert?

It may be a power supply issue, but the siren noise could also mean that the processor was overheating which can be caused by the CPU fan dying. Open up the box, turn it on and see if the CPU fan is still working properly. If so, it is most likely a power supply problem.

Replacing the power supply should be something that you can do on your own, I am sure they have some tutorials online somewhere.

- Check to make sure the heat-sink beneath your processor's fan is free of dust.
- Turn it on and check to see if your processor fan is spinning cleanly.
- Remove and replace your memory, and graphics card to make sure they're in properly.

If all those are fine, and your power supply fan is still not turning, buy a new power supply.

I took it in... it WAS in fact the Power Supply... After the guy took it out, the guy had me smell it. It was definately fried. ;)

I have a mother of a 480 in there now. :D
