Already hiding in the bunker. I'm aware I put a Leaf player in the proposal!

I confess to knowing very little about Mark Hartigan except that he is a 25yr old forward who couldnt crack the Thrashers lineup last season.

As a Leaf fan Id rather hang onto Ponikarovsky.

Same, I know little about Hartigan as well.

We're pretty weak on the wings in our system, so I figure keeping Poni would be in the best interest for us unless he's used in a package to get a better dman.

Poni. has played pretty well in camp so far, using his size and getting into the high traffic areas. Playing with Mogilny helps, though.

Here's his stats package

Blew out his knee in his 2nd NHL game in 01-02.

Split time between the AHL and NHL last year.

I think Poni has more potential than Hartigan. As limited as it may be I think the Leafs are better off hanging onto him.

much rather land a defenseman that can play...

however the deal is very fair IMO..hartigan does have some offensive game, he's scored where he's played... just a pointless deal i'd say.. no real big gain for doing it on either side

I simply don't see how your trade helps the Leafs. Poni is younger and has, imo, more upside than Hartigan. Hartigan wouldn't crack the Leafs this year and will be 26 in one month. I am confident that sooner than later, Poni will be a good player for many years for the Leafs while I can say that much about Hartigan. Hartigan is an old prospect and I consider Poni's upside to be higher. Lateral move at best IMO.

What about something like Ponikarovsky for Derrick Walser?

i think i'd only have interest in either:

luke richardson or jaro spacek

or in prospects:

Aaron Johnson or Ole Kristian Tollefsen

You underrate Derrick Walser. He's a very capable puck-moving defenseman with underrated defensive skills. Luke Richardson has lost a step and struggled with the increased ice time last season. They won't be moving Jaroslav Spacek if they're smart, either.

Walser would be a good fit for the Leafs.

i may be..

I wouldn't say Marchment or Berg (although Berg is a guy I don't know as much as I should about)...but I'd rather have Walser on my blueline than Jackman.

What's the dirt on Jackman?

If you need offense, Walser would be the defenseman I would've turned to in Columbus (before Sydor came and Spacek emerged).

dirt? inconsistent physical play imo

he's a stay at homer that can rush, but when he's on physically he's on.. he can throw hits, and lots of them throughout the game.. when he isn't playing physical, he's just a mediocre guy that has to grab and hold on all night and makes ok passes out of the zone...

a couple of years ago, Doug MacLean turned down Poni straight up for impending FA Ray Whitney.

Which is good, since we don't need anymore 3rd/4th line grinders.

Yep - according to MacLean during his weekly radio show he turned this deal down :banghead:

I can only guess that his thought process was that he could 1. either get something better for Whitney or 2. he was gonna resign him.

CBJ got a surprise 3rd rounder in last year's draft as compensation for Whit. I can't complain about that. The four 3rd rounders last year enabled them to trade up to get Pineault.

Oops! on both counts.

Not really, in retrospect.
If MacLean made the trade for Poni, CBJ wouldn't have gotten a compensation pick this year which gave them a surplus of picks that enabled them to move up and draft Pineault.
I like Poni and he's certainly a better player now, but CBJ need guys like Pineault more than guys like Poni.
Granted, MacLean might have lucked into this one, but I can't complain. Yet.
