Lafleur v. Milbury

The greatest player of his generation (and most exciting ever) being targeted by a journeyman; this is why Guy gets respect. He never backed off or had a goon try and take out Milbury. Guy was alleged to have shot the puck at Milbury (debatable - it kind of was bouncing when he shot it) in Game 2 of the 77 finals and the Bruins threatened to kill him when the series continued in Boston.

Well, Guy scored or assisted on the remaining Montreal goals in the series. Sweep.

Anyone know any more about this rivalry?

Flower owned those Bruin teams ...those Bruin teams never get the respect they deserve ,that Montreal powerhouse just ate up everyone .
Don Cherry when he had his show Grapevine asked Guy if he was trying to hit Milbury in the head with that shot and Guy just laughed and said " i was just trying to come close "..Lafleur how can you not love the guy .

The flower is a classic and always will be my idol.I just wish he had'nt done those viagra ads...i've taken a lot of ribbing from hab haters over those ones.Still........it's not like Guy had to use it......he's just helping out all those folks out there with their problem.......that's the Flower for ya,always looking to help out his fellow : citizens.Don't anyone dare say anything different. :madfire:

Game 2 eh? I somehow dont remember Lafleur purpousely shooting a puck at Milbury. Game 2... was it that game where the habs and bruins had tons of fights I think in the second period and one Bruin punched the canadiens players nose and knocked him out? Cuz I think in that game, Lafleur shot the puck to Cheevers and he got hurt... Anyone could remind me?

I grew up in Montreal in that period and dont recall anyone calling him Flower ; the Guy Guy chants started in the Challenge Cup 79.

The game where the fights that you mentionn ocurred was g4 tying up that series. Mtl.'s collars were getting a bit tight. Mario Tremblay was the key figure in g5&6 with key goals and a fight. A fight shouldn't really matter that much but Boston was feeling pretty good about themselves after g4. I think Mario got involved with Schmautz, a small but sneaky,dirty forward.

Tremblays pummeling of Shmautz was as one sided as Jonathan sh!tkicking of Pierre .
Tremblay was an underrated fighter ..he was tough as nails ..too bad he didnt kick Pattys a$$ .

The puck was bouncing slightly and Guy slapped at it and it hit MM in the upper chest; Cheesers and MM rushed out to confront Guy (photo made the papers); english media didnt play it up much. But there was lots of booing in Boston when guy stepped on the ice; 4 minutes in he scored on a PP from Lapointe.

2 goals 2 assist including a dazzling 2on1 with shutt; 4-2 final; his best game ever. Unavailable on tape.

:lol , funny stuff.....LaFleur, in his prime, owned everybody. From about 75' to around 80' LaFleur was the best the NHL had to offer. :bow:

Guy was known as 'The Flower' by many. He was all of them - but most of all, he was uniquely Lafleur. The Flower. Delicate, yet indestructible. Lafleur pulled people out of their seats more often than any player of his time.
