MiamiScreamingEagles 02-13-2005, 10:45 AM Who would you rank as the five best players (non-goalies) in NHL history who spent their entire careers with just one team/franchise?
In no specific order players like Maurice Richard, Jean Beliveau, Mario Lemeiux, Bobby Clarke, Henri Richard, Stan Mikita, Mike Bossy, Steve Yzerman, Denis Potvin, Peter Forsberg, come to mind. If I am forgetting an obvious player, please add it.
mvp76 02-13-2005, 10:54 AM Haven't had the chance to see some of these great players so from what i've seen:
Mario Lemieux
Steve Yzerman
Scott Stevens
Forsberg/Sakic(Quebec/Colorado)

Scott Stevens played with more than one team. A Zepp fan? :)
mvp76 02-13-2005, 10:59 AM Wow,young and inexperienced :)
I only know him as a Devil.
Yup,a Zeppelin fan.
Along with any other classic rock band.
mvp76 02-13-2005, 11:13 AM To replace Stevens i'll put down Lidstrom.
I'll go with Lemieux, Beliveau, Bossy, Potvin, and Richard. HM's to Gil Perreault, Mikita, Milt Schmidt, and Apps SR (I think).

Good music (I saw Robert Plant open for The Who a couple of years ago :yo: ) and good addition to the list in Lidstrom.

Missionhockey 02-13-2005, 01:05 PM Martin Brodeur?
Ajacied 02-13-2005, 01:10 PM Mike Modano deserves a mentioning..

Not really, he's not in the same group as most of the players mentioned here.

wedge 02-14-2005, 05:11 AM Mike Modano deserves a mentioning..
for the recent years, I agree...
he's not in the same class as the beliveaus and Richards... but in those days, most of the star players never got traded, so Modano's achievements are great.
shadoz19 02-14-2005, 05:19 AM Martin Brodeur?

No Quarter 02-14-2005, 12:03 PM Stan Mikita played 20 some years with The Blackhawks before retiring.
Scott Stevens has played with 3 teams. People only remember him as a Devil. They forget him as a Capital and Blue.
Evil Homer 02-17-2005, 08:29 PM Another good player going back a few years - Alex Delvecchio.
Frightened Inmate #2 02-17-2005, 08:36 PM Dit Clapper
Bobby Clarke
Steve Yzerman
Joe Sakic
Bobby Orr (what chicago i don't remember no damn chicago)
Richard
Richard
Beliveau
Bernie Geoffrion
Potvin
Mikita
Bossy
I think Shore only played for Boston
blind willie 02-17-2005, 10:14 PM I'd add Dave Taylor to the list.
mazmin 02-17-2005, 10:48 PM Thomas Steen
Eddie Shore and Boom Boom both played in NY. Shore with the Americans and Geoffrion with the Rangers.
Frightened Inmate #2 02-18-2005, 12:05 AM I forgot about Boom Boom coming back with the Rangers, but I had no idea Shore played 10 games with the Americans.
But Milt Schmidt, Bill Cook, Perreault, Ted Kennedy (knew this one because he used to be my dads neighbor), I keep thinking Salming but I think he played in Detroit (someone could correct me on that I don't have the time to look it up), Couroyer only played in Montreal I think.
1.) Mario Lemieux
2.) Maurice Richard
3.) Bobby Clarke
4.) Denis Potvin
5.) Jean Beliveau
I didn't want to put Yzerman in there yet because he hasn't retired yet and could very well play 2+ more seasons and in that case he would be my #2 or #3. As of right now, he's probably #4
Frightened Inmate #2 02-18-2005, 12:31 AM Beliveau >> Yzerman
That is evident from everything I have read and the old games I have been lucky enough to watch (on TV that is)

I would venture to say that these 2 are very equal. Both were tremendous players on succesful teams. Both are NHL legends. Both were embassadors of the game. And both were true gentleman. You cant find anybody who has a negative comment about Beliveau or Yzerman.
I think they are very close in comparison.

Yzerman has played almost more than 350 NHL for Detroit than Beliveau has for Montreal. Not to mention Yzerman has also around 500 more points. Despite both Yzerman and Beliveau being the franchise player of their respective franchises, Beliveau always had a strong supporting cast while Yzerman was Detroit's one-man show in the early Red Wings history of the 80s.

Yes Stevy has 500 more points but he also as you said played a lot more games which is the reason why he has had that many more points, as well as the difference in eras and the fact that back then players especially Jean thought about one thing and thats about winning the cup not about personal stats. Not to mention Hockey News ranked him no 7 all time only behind such immortals as Wayne, Orr, Howe, Lemieux, Rocket and Shore. Yzerman wasnt even in the top 15.
Jean Beliveau >> Steve Yzerman.
Although both were great players and top 5 centers of all time for sure after the likes of Mario and Wayne.

Yzerman played in how many years where there was a 70 game schedule? There's most of the games played difference right there.
Wow, Yzerman scored more points during the NHL's highest scoring era. The league goals/game average was way up for the 80's and 90's, and they played more games to boot. The highest scoring year Beliveau played in was his last year, where the average was 6.24 goals/game, over a 78 game schedule. Yzerman played his first 11 years in a higher scoring league, 8 of them with over 7 goals/game, with at least an 80 game schedule.
Yzerman just passed Beliveau in playoff points last year, and has yet to catch him in goals, but he's played 30 more playoff games.
Beliveau > Yzerman

Mike Bossy (the greatest goal scorer of all time)

No one has ever come close to Bossy's accuracy. He could put the puck through the smallest gaps between the goalie and the net, and he made it look easy.

Gordie played more years for one team than all the others so he should not be penalized for walking out of the HOF to play with "the children".
