Smoking athletes...

I've always found it very surprising when I discover a particular athlete is a smoker.. I just find it wierd that in a profession where so much depends on your how well you are physically, people would make it so hard for themself. I was wondering which athletes you know of that smoke?

I know Guy Lafleur was a heavy smoker.

I worked at a golf course that Steve Thomas used to come to, he smoked quite a bit...but he was also built like a brick wall

Well If you smoke weed and cigarettes you probably smoke weed a lot less.

I heard that if through a pipe, weed is MUCH more healthy than cigarettes.

Vlade Divac smokes cigarettes,I don't know anyone else,though. I think it's a bad thing.

I remember hearing about some Canadiens' players in the seventies who would go smoke a cigar between periods at one of the exits at the Montreal Forum.

A guy I know who wants to make the Canadian Olympic athletics team for running (5K, 10K) has smoken at various times. He says that when he played semi-pro soccer in Turkey, the whole team would go smoke in the parking lot at half-time.

Bertuzzi dips all the time, you can tell when you watch him play, i don't know about smoking though

I'm not sure, but back in the 70s, didn't some coaches smoke on the bench? In Italy, several coaches smoke cigarettes on the sidelines. Marcello Lippi of Juventus comes to mind.

Cigars are cleaner than cigarettes anyways. There's a lot more crap in cigarettes.
That said, cigars are still bad for you. Just ask Pat Quinn. And his doctor. :)

I know he doesn't smoke anymore for certain...but he does sweat more than any athlete I've been near: as in BOBBY BROWN sweatin'.

As for cigars, many including Orr LOVE cigars, which is fine by me.

As for butts, Kovalenko and Iafrate were heavy smokers...the Big Bad Bruins TO A MAN were heavy smokers, and Khabibulin used to be a moderate smoker.

Former New York Islanders great Mike Bossy use to smoke 2 packs a day in the offseason and by the time the hockey season rolled around he cut it back to half a pack a day.

what? he smokes (smoked)? ray bourque?? nahhh. he used to smoke?

I know that Alex Mogilny used to smoke when he was with the Sabres.. I'm not sure if he still does it now though

Mario used to be a heavy smoker.......Lenny Dykstra used to smoke butts in the runway leading from the dugout into the locker room in between innings

From my region:

Weed - C Web (although still a nice guy to meet casually)

Butts - Vlade Divac - very well known that he goes through the stuff cartons at a time. You mustn't look further than the expressions on his face when he runs the floor.

Rod Beck - Although closing pitcher doesn't always require one to be in the best shape, I can always remember on fan days way back when at Candlestick park. During these meetings Beck would ALWAYS have a pack of Kool's either in his shirt pocket or rolled up in his sleeve.

I've heard the opposite (although that might just be propaganda too...) I've heard that the tar from tobacco has more dangerous chemicals in it. As well, who knows what kind of chemicals go into processing commercial tobacco? With weed, you're probably getting a much more "organic" product.

Whered you get that? i find it hard to belive. he was a health freak and a great example to all the young players, all the players for that matter. his entire career. its been written about. then to be a smoker- dosnt make any sense!

Hard as it is to believe athletes do smoke - Mats Sundin does, and a lot of the guys from the 70's smoked a LOT.
