No. Dunham is not overrated.

Yes, Dunham is overrated, and so too is Dominick Hasek. Giving up five goals after sitting out the last 18 months. What a bum! :p

Hockey fans are starved for action. But it's worth remembering that the outcomes (scores) of pre-season games are meaningless. And, for veteran players, they mean nearly as little.

Dunham was unfortunate to be thrown into the fire a bit too late. He was stuck behind Brodeur and then at age 26 (am I correct?) was put behind an expansion team. He was at some point ranked higher than Brodeur, who would break out earlier. I have had the feeling that Dunham should have been better off if he would have had the chance to be a starter earlier in his carrier. Only my opinion.

As for Dunham, basing this discussion on a preseason game is ridiculous. We wouldn't be handing him the Vezina if he shut em out, so why are we talking about a bad preseason start (which I don't know cause I didn't see any of the game)

how sad is it that someone has to use a preseason game for basis, not to mention a game where the Rangers played an AHL caliber defense, only one NHLer Boris Mironov, on their third game in three nights on the road

I don't think Dunham is overrated one bit.

He can carry a team when he wants to...my only gripe about him is his attitude. He does alot of that: "It's XXX's fault, not mine." Blaming everyone else, instead of taking some heat himself.

Up until last year though hadn't Richter been the main guy in NY for at least 10 years? All I can remember are the backups that had a tough time there.

you're right but I think his point is because the defense is so bad, the goaltenders need to up their game here to do well

IMO he's underrated. He never gets fair credit for what he's done because he plays on week defensive teams. if he played the full year with the Rangers they would have made the playoffs. of all the big names Sather has brought in, he's the only player to truely effect whether they win or lose.

Dunham is a top 5-10 goaltender when he's on top of his game. However, through his career with the Predators, he was only on top of his game about 70% of the time. I've only seen him a few times as Ranger, so I can't give an educated opinion there.

His glove hand is one of the best in the league. He can make the first save as good as anyone else in the league (when he's on top of his game). His main weakness is his rebounds. He gives up a TON of the them. However, he does have the ability to direct the rebounds where he wants them to go. But other times, his rebounds can result in mad scrammbles in front of the net, which depending on the quality of defensemen, will result in goals. And once he's down, he's not getting up.
