hey, thank you all.

i'm very lucky to have had him as my father, and even luckier to have had appreciated him when he was around.

the wisest fellow I've seen (knew anything about everything) and a wonderful role model.

i'm also very lucky to have a very close family.

we also have 45+ composition notebooks filled with journal entries. i've read perhaps 1/15th so far, and am just blown away.

thank you all for helping keep my head on straight for the last 3 weeks. it has meant a lot.

(test week this week that's gonna be missed. ugh.)

again, thank you all

Dear Brendan,

I know from experience how hard it is to lose a parent...they are the anchors in your life, and it's sometimes hard to know how you will manage without that anchor.

Keep your parent's memory alive in your heart...stay strong. Live your life as much as you can, with joy and love and laughter - the same as your father did.

If ever you need someone to talk to, you can always PM me...I'm not far away.

In the meantime, from myself and all the regular gang on the Red Wings boards, we send you our condolences and prayers.

Always,
Kira

Brendan,

I'm very sorry to hear about the loss and I can't even begin to imagine what you must be going through right now. Keep your head held high and remember the good times you had. Some of the best advice I've ever been given is to always conduct yourself in a manner that would make your parents proud. Best of luck.

My father is an old drunken fool but I still would hate to see him die. My deepest and sincerest condolences to you and your family Brendan. If I could, I'd take up a collection to buy you a new dad but I doubt that this would be very helpful. So mourn the passing of your dad and know that we are all with you and we're all here to support you. And don't be afraid to cry, I cried like a baby when my cat (pictured in my avatar) passed away a few months ago.

again, thank you all.

friday was pretty great though- my mother had called me at 4pm to say that he had been awake for a little while (he'd been chemically sedated for most of the 3 weeks) and smiled at her, mouthed some words and blew her a kiss. i was thrilled, 2 hours later, it was a different situation.
it's great though that before he went, he made us all smile.
i still do smile though, more than i've been upset, just because i realize how great he was to us and how proud and lucky i am.

thanks for the support, we have a ton (probably more than that, really) of family and friends here.

it's refreshing to know there are such good people around.

Holy potatoes.

I hardly know what to say, Brendan - I'm just stunned and heartsick. I really thought he was going to be OK.

All I can think of to tell you is that your life will never be the same as it was when your father was alive, but it can still be an excellent life if you live it as though he were still a part of it - keep him at the front of your mind and the front of your heart every minute of every day, and you'll find that your father's presence will still guide every decision you make and every step you take. He'll be right there with you every minute of the rest of your life. It's true, really - and all you have to do to let it happen is to let yourself be conscious of it.

Your dad was a good man, Brendan - probably the finest man you'll ever know. He must have been, or you wouldn't have turned out the way you did. Honor his memory, and dedicate your life to making him proud. And stay strong, buddy - he needs you to look out for your mother right now. If there's anything any of us can do, please let us be here for you to lean on.

You'll get through it. It didn't sink in right away for me when my father died. He died when I was 14, due to liver failure. We all knew it was coming for years, due to his drinking habits. But it didn't really hit me that he was gone until the day after.

There's not much you can do, except let time pass.

First round of visiting hours over.
so many people, and only the first 2 hours worth! these sort of things were always awkward when i was on the other side of the line, but i'm really appreciating seeing and talking to all the people who cared for the man (genuine feelings are so wonderful)

my father's journals are true treasures. he wrote notes in them for readers of the future, mostly comments on how much he loved his children, and things for people of the future. they are just blowing us away. amazing.

Irish Blues- re: charity
We have been thinking of this, and without trying to sound corny, we realize that my father would have liked people to pick up a book and read or sit and just appreciate nature or enjoy the company of others... heck, start a journal so your kids can some day when you aren't there will sit around and remember you.

these sort of things mean so much.

thank you all, yet again.
