Which one is funnier? Personally, I absolutely love Family Guy. I think it's the best show on tv! Simpsons is still good, but Family Guy has taken the cake!

Family Guy was pretty good for the two minutes I watched it for. Maybe I should start watching it more.

So, I voted for "They Both Suck", because it didn't have a vote yet and I felt sorry for it. :D

Family Guy is funnier, but is pretty derivative of the Simpsons.

The Simpsons is the original trailblazer. Think of how many episodes of Family Guy are dependent on storylines that the Simpsons already did. The Griffins go to an Indian Casino, Lois develops a gambling addiction? C'mon.

I'm voting push...Family Guy is hilarious, and came out at the perfect time (right when the Simpsons started to get weak). I think if you compare the 3 Family Guy seasons with seasons 3-5 of the Simpsons(the best IMO), its neck and neck. Consequently, if Family Guy had been able to continue, and remain as edgy as it was for 5 or 6 years, I might think differently.

Simpsons is always compared to Family Guy and it's rather unfair of course because as you say Simpsons was the trail blazer. What it really comes down to is your taste in movies. If you enjoy storylines and plot, Simpsons is your cup of tea, if you enjoy the abstract, something that uses jokes to tell the story, Family Guy is it. This is an easy line to draw because most people who don't like Family Guy but do like the Simpsons usually have the excuse of "and the plots .. they're always absurd and don't mean anything, my brain melts when this happens, I need closure ! I need my pacifier ! I need my mommie !"

One point I heard that is very correct is that Simpsons relies on Homer for it's comedy, with other characters being just key cameos, whereas Family Guy had three Homers - Stewie, Peter and Brian. Family Guy pushed the boundries more, and Lois was a much more interesting and realistic woman than Marge.

Simpsons, they've been around longer and even though the last couple of seasons have been weak, the best seasons of the Simpsons were better than the 3 seasons of Family Guy (and Family Guy is overrated, IMO).

It's jsut hard to compare a show that lasted three seasons to a show that's lasted 14 years and is still going... I don't think I've evr laughed at any show ahrder than Family Guy. However if I was to make a 'best shows ever' list, Simpsons would be much higher up on the list... Family Guy owns the Simpsons in some "subcategories" of comedy. Family Guy just can't be beaten when it coems to flashbacks. That's definitely the funniest part of that show. Randomness, Family Guy is the best. Simpsons is the best at "freeze-frame comedy", something they basically invented. I think I overall prefer Family Guy because of the way it pushed the envelope, something that eventually got them cancelled.

Simpsons is by far superior.

To get all the jokes in the Simpsons, you have to be somewhat smart (hell, even my parents think its hilarious). The same can't be said for family guy. It goes for the cheap laugh and only a small portion of the population really likes it (all the others find it offensive and/or stupid).

The Simpsons has wit, Family Guy doesn't. And Peter Griffin is such a copy off Homer it isn't even funny.

Simpson's by a landslide. Anybody who thinks otherwise should be shot!!!

I love the Family Guy but I think The Simpsons is better. It's just better overall, it can appeal to many age groups, it has many good supporting characters that get a lot of focus in the shows, the formula of the show is constantly shuffled also. Family Guy has one formula and they repeat it every show. It's good, but it won't be able to last as long as the Simpsons. I think by the 8-9 season or so, it will be pretty dull and done. The supporting characters are pretty weak and 99% of the episodes all focus on Peter and Stewie. Which is inevitable since most of the other characters are annoying and hard to develop (It doesn't help that there are so many flashbacks and characters who appear in them can only be seen or heard for a max of 15 seconds). It's still a great show and one of my favourites but to me, Simpsons is just too good and on so many levels (Although the first 2 seasons of the Simpsons were simply horrible).

Compared to the last two they were amazing. Simpsons has been downhill since season 12 and maybe thats why Family Guy is even close in this poll.

To be fair Family Guy benefited from the fact that society is much more tolerant of "vulgar" comedy. If you look at the early years of the simpsons they were still considered hilarious, but they were restricted in what they could do, so in retrospect they seem dull to us now. If you were to start both the simpsons and family at the same time the simpsons would kill. Plus the simpsons jokes tend to be more nuianced and intelligent then Family Guy.

I'll go with the simpsons, but I'm not gonna take anything away from Family GUy.

Yeah...I don't think the series was "good" until the third or fourth season. It peaked around the ninth, tenth and eleventh (those three seasons have most of my most favorite episodes in them), then started the decline in the 12th season. The first and second seasons were lame. IMO.

I love both shows, but I put down the Simpsons.

People don't realize how hard it is to run a sitcom as long as the Simpsons and still be funny. The creators of the family guy would have a hell of a time trying to maintain the Simpson's longevity record.

It would be difficult for Family Guy to last as long as the Simpsons, although I'd love for it to. Each Family Guy episode contains a season's worth of Simpsons jokes. The jokes are so fast paced, you're bound to miss something funny if you blink.
That said, I'd say that I like both of them, but I think Family Guy is funnier. The Simpsons have several on-going jokes through great character development, whereas Family Guy is just bang bang bang.

I disagree that an episode of FG = a season of Simpsons. It is more fast paced, and but there are quite a few more misses in an episode of Family Guy.

You are right on the Simpson's character development though. There are very few shows, either drama or comedy, that can match the Simpsons in this regard.

Agreed with Alzardnp1... Family Guy has a fe wmain characters.. Simpsons have based their comedy on different characters..

I love them both, but when it comes right down to it, it's not even close. The Simpsons is easily my favorite.

Yes, the Family Guy has jokes coming at you fast and furious, but the majority of the time, they're cheap and recycled. It's like the Family Guy is set and written in a "grade six" frame of mind. I mean, it's still funny, and I laugh the whole way through, but I don't appreciate the humour nearly as much. The show does have wit/subtle humour, but it's pretty rare when compared to the Simpsons.

So, in the end, if I was stuck on a desert island, and I could only watch one animated show, it would be the Simpsons. Two, it would be the Simpsons and Futurama. But if I could watch three, the Family Guy would definitely be included in there somewhere.

I like them both, but if I have to give a *slight* edge to Family Guy, mainly because it just appeals to me more right now. Simpsons are stale, they've been stagnant for going on 3 years now. FG had more of that "Did he say what I thought he said?" double take thing going for it. Simpsons have gotten a lot more formulaic.

Simpsons has a far superior supporting cast on the whole, but one guy you have to give an honourable mention is Quagmire...he just kills.

"Dear Diary...Jackpot!" :joker:

In terms of overall impact on the TV scene though, you have to give props to The Simpsons. One of the most (if not the most) influential sitcoms in TV history, and it's a fricken' CARTOON?

I think another thing the Simpsons clearly have in their favor is the voice talent. The scope of the show is so wide, yet the limited number of voice actors manages to bring a unique and funny voice to each and every character.

Speaking of voices, I think Family Guy voices are a bit more memorable.
I'm sure everyone remembers Peter's annoying laugh, Stewie's horrible accent, Quagmire's "heh heh....o-right, gigity gigity gigity", and Cleveland's "Oh now you're just being cra-zy"

I disagree. Everyone remember's Homer's "D'oh! adn woohoo", Bart's "Ay Karamba", Mr. Burns' "Excellent", Apu's "Thank You, come again" Barney's *Burp* etc. Simpson's is the way more quoted show.

Yeah, I was actually gonna put these in as a comparison...somehow, I find Quagmire's "o-right", more amusing than Homer's "doh". But I'm pretty sure "eat my shorts" was funny back in the day. oh well.

Also, yes, I agree that Peter's character was derived from Homer...but I'm sure they got Homer from a lot of other TV dads (Fred Flinstone?)...
In the Family Guy DVD, Seth McFarlane explained that he got Peter's character from his experiences in Rhode Island, and modeled him after some security guard.

Anyone who bought season 3's DVD should check out the bonus scenes if you haven't already.
