Mizral 09-24-2003, 10:08 AM I was reading a (loose) translation of a Swedish journalists interview with Markus Naslund - it alluded to a trade that nearly happened but never went down.
Reportedly, it was Naslund for a mid-round pick, but the reason why it never happened was Bertuzzi got injured and the team felt they had to keep Naslund around.
Could you imagine the Senators with Naslund on their roster...?
Beyond scary.
Ajacied 09-24-2003, 10:12 AM uh.. no I can't.. simple for the fact they would not be able to affort him by now..
Mr. Canucklehead 09-24-2003, 10:14 AM The deal was set, it was going to be Markus Naslund to the Ottawa Senators for a 4th round pick. A typical dumbassed Keenan trade. However, Todd Bertuzzi received an Adrian Aucoin slapshot to the leg, and Keenan scrapped the deal because the Canucks lacked NHL ready wingers to replace Bertuzzi. So Naslund as allowed to remain and keep playing.
Thanks Adrian! :p

There was an article (I think on Canoe) that detailed a whole bunch of trades that almost happened with Ottawa. I'll try to dig it up later, but some of the interesting ones:
Yzerman to Ottawa. I forget who for (maybe Yashin), but it was at a time when Stevie Wonder still had not lead his team to the promised land, and Detroit management was getting a little frustrated with him. It essentially would have been the professional equivalent of Siberia, as this was the not-so-much glory years of the Sens.
Daigle for ???. Ottawa had the option of trading the Daigle pick for some great players. I think we had a chance to land Forsberg
Lecalvier for Bonk and Salo. Apparently, this deal was about to go down until TB ownership stepped in. I think this is exaggerated, as at the time, more return was being discussed (Spezza's name was mentioned quite often)
Naslund for ?? - There were a couple of times when this trade was being considered.
There were some other ones too.

Don't ask me why the Ottawa Lynx are in the URL though. It's what showed up on the google search.

I think it is very cool to see what almost happened. That was a great article. Thanks.
ehc73 09-24-2003, 06:43 PM I doubt Ottawa would've been able to afford most(if any) of those players if the deals went through.
Aaron Vickers 09-24-2003, 06:45 PM Isn't this old news to be reporting Miz?
I swear I've heard this old bag at least a half-dozen times now!!
A.J. ¹ 09-24-2003, 11:56 PM Lecavalier for Bonk and Salo. Apparently, this deal was about to go down until TB ownership stepped in.
Hmmm....According to Bill Watters {not with the Leafs anymore, he's now with Mojo Radio here in T.O.}, Lecavalier was just about to become a Leaf until Tampa's ownership blocked the deal, and Dudley was fired 2 weeks or 2 months later {can't remember}. The deal would've happened in December just before Christmas.
The deal....
A yound d-man {not Kaberle}, young forward {Antropov....Dudley's been trying to get him for a long time now according to Watters, and still is trying now that he's with Florida} & a draft pick.

The whole issue around who Lecalvier was going to be dealt for is a little fuzzy. The article does put any specific quotes around the deal, but Dudley is quoted elsewhere in the article, which implies that the information regarding that probably came from him, so I think it was Ottawa that nearly landed him. At the time that it happened, the two teams that were in the running for him were Ottawa and New Jersey. I'm still suprised at how little was offered from Ottawa, given that Bonk's value was less then it is now (he's been a much better player since then) and Salo's was also not worth that much, as he had been trade bait for years in Ottawa. At the very least, I think Gleason would have been thrown into the deal. I know Lecalvier's value was dipping at that point, but the rumoured offer from New Jersey was Arnott and Gomez.
