What number do you wear?

Pretty straight forward question. What number(s) do you wear and what is the significance, if any.

19. Have since Pee Wee in 1985. Wore it because I liked Scott Mellanby and I was on a Flyers team in California. Favorite player since then is Steve Yzerman.

Ironically enough, my kids birthday is 6-13-00 = 19.
Hoping my next one is born on the 9th. (Wife's due date is the 10th).

Forgot to post mine. I wear 75 simply because when I started playing the league I was in had the same home and away jerseys for everyone, white or red. Inevitably as players moved around from team to team you would have two or three 10s, 9s, 19s, etc ending up on the same team. I picked a number that no one used (until Brett Lindros) so that no matter what team I was on my number wasn’t duplicated.

Other numbers I have been issued are: 4, 5, 9, and 15.

When I played baseball I changed numbers every year. Turns out the year I wore 77, my BA was hovering around .500 (mind you this is community league and I was 11) and one of my best games I ended up with a pair of Triples and 2 R.B.I's. Before and after, I had crummy seasons, struck out alot, and was at the end of the batting order.

when i first started playing hockey, i wore 88 because of Lindros and it was also by birth year. but when i created myself on my NHL games for the PC/Playstation, i couldnt be 88 because Lindros was on the team. so i picked 18 because it had an 8 in it and i thought it was the coolest number out of 8,28,38,etc. if 18 is taken, i wear 81

I wear 52... I wore 12 2 years in a row and scored a combined 6 goals in 30 games... Next season wore ;52 and scored 12 in 15 games... Been wearing it ever since.

72. I picked it when I played football, because I was a lineman and I had to have a number in the 60s and 70s. So, I picked it as because Ron Hextall is my favorite athelete ever. It is his 27 reversed, and he wore 72 for the Islanders. Now, I wear it for hockey too.

I wear 11 now, and have for a number of years really. But that was interupted for a few years because our team simply didn't have a #11, so I stole #19 from another player....but I've worn #11 basically since I started playing hockey...no significant reason either really

I used to wear 70 but I was given 99 last year but I felt I was no Wayne Gretzky and I should not wear HIS number neither should anyone else so I switched to 70 simply because it's my birth year 88 minus the day I was born 18.

I've worn #27 for a while. Kovalev turned 27 into into a cool number during his time in Pittsburgh, but I had it before his time here and I can't remember why.

As a kid, I wore 10 for Guy Lafleur. I tried to get it when I started playing men's league...but it was gone. I have been wearing Howe's 9 ever since.

Next season will be my rookie season as a 16 year old. The number I will be wanting will be 36 after Matthew Barnaby, 37 after Mikael Samuelsson, or 38 after Ronald Petrovicky.

It's kind of reassuring to see half of you guys not committing to consensus numbers.

A good addition to the thread would be a listing of all known consistencies with numbers and hockey players (Low digits, 30's Goaltenders, etc.). Ofcourse, if said list exists somewhere

I play defense and have worn #29 my whole hockey playing career. That's just a number that was given to me when I was little and I've worn it ever since.

When I was younger, I took #4 for everything (Bobby Orr) including softball.

In HS, for hockey I wore #18 (my ex and I thought it would be cute to have the same number). I took #6 (Ted Williams' 9 flipped over) for every other sport.

Now, for everything but hockey I keep the #6.

When I'm in net, I'm usually #1 just for the hell of it. When I skate out, I wear #47. It was issued to me, but I kept it on becuase it's Aaron Downey's number and one of my friends is close with him and assures me he's a good guy.

I usually try and grab #12 or #14 when the coach comes in and dumps the jerseys on the locker room floor and says ''help yourself''

37, for no reason other than I bought my helmet used and it had 37 on it. Isn't that a terrible reason? But I have no favourite numbers and no un-favourites except for 88 because of the white supremacist association.

Initially when I started playing travel hockey, I went with 26...this is probably when I was 11 or so. I kept that number until I was 16 too, then switching to #3 which I kept. For my highschool team, I tried to pick 26, but there was someone in the organization who had that number already, so I reluctantly went with 86. However, this ended up being a good move on my part because I was easily remember by people being that 86 is a fairly uncommon number. However, if I had the chance to do it all again, I'd have gone with #92 or something like that...i dunno why, but the higher numbers always intrigued me

I've always worn #11. No real significant reason. Only times I haven't worn #11 since I was about 8 years old was for an all-star game, where multiple players wore 11 ... or for a few games when our trainer at Penn St. lost my white jersey ... had to wear 13 for a bit.

I wore 19 in our beer league last year, and am going to wear 44 for next year.

19 for Naslund, but myself being a defensman, I didn't feel I had any connection to the number other than an admiration of the player who wears it in the NHL. 44 for Bertuzzi, and myself being a pyshical type player, it seems to make more sense.

Tried to wear 16 for Bobby Clarke when I was a kid or later when I had a choice. When I started playing our jersies were numbered by size, low numbers for the extra larges to high teens and 20's for the smalls so sometimes 16 was too small. I've worn 00, 4, 5, 9, 20 a couple of times, 25, 88 but 16 off and on for about 15 different years. My kid wears 55 for everything but that's for a baseball player but he wears it for hockey too.

22 - It was assigned to me on my first team, and it's just been the number I've always worn ever since. 22 is a grinders number, which is what I am, so it stuck.

77, which I orginally got playing Pop Warner football. No real signficance, when it was jersey issue time I was hoping to get 50 or 53. I was third in line so I was somewhat confident I'd get it. 53 went first, 50 went second. 77 looked cool so I took it and it stuck. Took it over to hockey (and track for that matter).

I used to be #44 because Rob Niedermayer was my favorite player for years in Floriday, but then I was issued 66 and wore that, and then was and had been #96. It's Pavel Bure's number from when he was electric back for the canucks a long time ago and Bure was my favorite player in FLA. Last year though, our coach wouldn't let us pick any high numbers so I went with #16. I'm gonna be #96 again next year though.

It started because I always used to wear #9 because Gretzky was my favorite as a youngster (we couldn't pick our own numbers, they were standard issue 2-16 + 2 goalie numbers), and one year I got shafted with #8 and had my best season. The year after that I finally got to choose my own number, and couldn't decide between 9 and 8, so I combined them.

This was all for lacrosse though, and in Hockey I was always a goalie so I usually had 1, 29 or 30... I was never picky as a goalie for some reason.

I was a huge Gilles Gilbert fan when I first started playing as a goaltender (I wore 22 as a defenseman in atom and mites as a nod to my fave blue liner Brad Park), but another kid on my team (a forward no less) had no. 1. My coach was a Maple Leafs fan, and at the time, they had a pretty damn good goalie named Mike Palmateer.

He tricked my 8-year-old self into taking no. 29 by talking up Palmateer like he was the second coming of Georges Vezina, but I got a shutout in my first-ever start, so after that, there was no way I was giving it up.

A lot of people thought I was a Ken Dryden fan because of it, but never had any use for that habstool. It was all Palmateer.

16, after my two favourite players on my favourite team. Stastny's 26 and Sakic's 19, that and when I first played hockey my coach didn't like people having numbers over 30.

My favorite number when I played was 11. I wore that number during my best season of roller hockey, and was among the leaders in scoring. So, I'll be gunning for that number.

#9 - the last 10 years or so for all the roller and ice hockey teams I've played on. I lived in Westland, Michigan (Mike Modano's hometown) for a number of years and I'm the same age as Modano, so I guess that's why I wear it.

#19 - for softball. Robin Yount and Paul Molitor were my favorite baseball players growing up. Yount wore #19 until he retired. Molitor wore #19 in honor of Yount when he signed with the Blue Jays (and won a WS in that number).

When I was younger, I would always hear that numbers that were above 30 for skaters were "showboat" numbers. I know Gretzky took 99 because 9 was taken and he loved Howe. So I took #2 always because it was a modest number and #1 was usually reserved for goalies. My brother also wore #2 (we weren't on the same team). Growing up a Ranger fan, Tom Laidlaw and of course Brian Leetch also wore #2 so I just stuck with it. If #2 was gone, I just doubled up and went with #22.

I have pretty much settled into wearing #81 or #14.

I started with #8 when I started playing since it was my favorite prospect's number (Jokinen). After a couple seasons someone else asked for #8, so I gave it up for #14 (for Stu Barnes). When our team ordered jerseys, I decided to take #81 for no particular reason. I still wear #14 when I sub for other teams (unless it's taken).

Lucky Luc's 20 has been the number I've played with most. I've also have played with 8 for Cam Neely. 28 for Eric Lacroix. 44 for Yanic Perreault. I ended up one season with number 49 because the stupid rink lettered the jersey wrong. A couple of times I have sported the number 10 as it was half of 20.

Besides that my number has been 20.

I used to wear #23 for Ilkka Sinisalo, then it was often taken because people liked Michael Jordan (I live In North Carolina), so then in a fortune cookie it told me my lucky number was #57, so I chose that. The only problem with #57 is that it is rare for any NHL player to wear it. I think Goran Bezina was the only one to wear it last year.

I wear 47 'cause I grew up in a family of Star Trek nerds (where 47 is integrated into EVERYTHING). It worked its way into my internet handle years ago and has become one of "my" numbers.

I've worn #12 the past eight years in honor of Hartford Wolf*Pack captain Ken Gernander. IMO he is the best captain in professional hockey and is a true leader by example.

Prior to wearing #12 I have worn #'s 1, 5, 11, 13, and 111 (I had #1 in a youth league, I didn't play for two season's before returning and someone else was wearing the number. Because the #1 was centered on the back of the jersey, I decided to wear #111. It was a youth rec league and they let the number slide.)

1, my favorite goalies are #1 (Aebisacher and Irbe). When i was a foward eariler i wore #9 dont ask me why it was always 9 though.

# 44 for me...mainly because when I first started Esposito's 7 was taken. So Todd Bertuzzi was the main inspiration, as i'm a power forward as well.

I was one of those dorky kids when I was young who wore his favorite players number, which was 66. Then around Bantams I went to 29, mainly because I wanted to change and pulled it out of the box. After high school when I got more into roller I combined the two and now wear 95.

Great topic because it allows everyone to tell their story but in most cases, no one cares but them.

But its always fun to tell your story and I had to oblige.

High School- #8 (assigned but I'm not a big guy so I always took it as a Mark Recchi reference)

College- #21 (very special to me because my coach said he gave it to me because of he knew another American born Italian player who did well in that number, I hope it was Eruzione but my teammates said it was Cammi Granato)

Men's League- #38 or #19 (Pavol Demitra is one of my favorite players and many of my favorite players including Brad Richards, Marco Sturm, Steve Yzerman, etc. and my mother's all-time favorite Jean Pronovost wear 19)

I always changed my number at each level because its like each number was based in that particular time period and it was time for a new one at a new level.

On our team, we had a really fast kid that wore #55. The significance? The speed limit at the time he realized he was fast. Cocky, but hilarious. Only a hockey player....

My first year of mite hockey was after San Jose's first year in the league. My favorite player was Doug Wilson (and still is) and I wanted number 24. As it turned out, Doug Wilson Jr. was on my team, so I figured he would want his dad's number and I went with 17 instead because of Pat Falloon (in the longrun I did the number a lot more justice than he did). I could've used 24 if I wanted too because Doug Jr. ended up using number 48, twice that of his dad's. I got a pretty good laugh out of that one.

I wore 24 a couple of times because of playing with a someone having seniority over me who wanted the number (a tournament team one summer, and my first year of midget).

This past winter my 10 yr old son played AA atom and was given # 7. I started playing again after 7 years off and was given a choice of a few numbers. # 7 was available so I took it to be the same as him. He thought it was pretty cool.

He had a pretty successful year and did the number proud, me not so much........ :shakehead

23 - my daughter's bday is Feb 3.

22, just cause Leetch was 2, and when i was young i knew me and him couldn't have the same numbers if we played together on the rangers, now he's with the bruins :( and i'm a career beer leauger !!
