Pretty straight forward question. What number(s) do you wear and what is the significance, if any.
What number do you wear?Pavel 05-03-2005, 03:48 PM Pretty straight forward question. What number(s) do you wear and what is the significance, if any. nikolai19 05-03-2005, 03:55 PM 19. Have since Pee Wee in 1985. Wore it because I liked Scott Mellanby and I was on a Flyers team in California. Favorite player since then is Steve Yzerman. Ironically enough, my kids birthday is 6-13-00 = 19. Hoping my next one is born on the 9th. (Wife's due date is the 10th). Pavel 05-03-2005, 04:25 PM Forgot to post mine. I wear 75 simply because when I started playing the league I was in had the same home and away jerseys for everyone, white or red. Inevitably as players moved around from team to team you would have two or three 10s, 9s, 19s, etc ending up on the same team. I picked a number that no one used (until Brett Lindros) so that no matter what team I was on my number wasn’t duplicated. Other numbers I have been issued are: 4, 5, 9, and 15. Brodeur 05-03-2005, 04:41 PM 31, not for any particular reason other than I'm a goalie and my short last name (Tran) looks awkward with any other number in the 30s. SkateLikeTheWind 05-03-2005, 04:59 PM Numbers I have chosen to wear: 9 and 15. Number I have been 'issued': 23. Not a bad number, its starting to grow on me. ALF AmericanLionsFan 05-03-2005, 05:25 PM 2 jcoldwell 05-03-2005, 05:26 PM The number I wear on my sweater is 73. The significance is that it is my birth year and nobody that I know wears that sweater number. I am so unique ;) clefty 05-03-2005, 05:39 PM I wore 89 at first. When I switched teams, 89 was taken and I was issued #14. I liked 14 though. futurcorerock 05-03-2005, 05:40 PM 77. I'm not a Bourque fan. When I played baseball I changed numbers every year. Turns out the year I wore 77, my BA was hovering around .500 (mind you this is community league and I was 11) and one of my best games I ended up with a pair of Triples and 2 R.B.I's. Before and after, I had crummy seasons, struck out alot, and was at the end of the batting order. Clancy 05-03-2005, 06:34 PM when i first started playing hockey, i wore 88 because of Lindros and it was also by birth year. but when i created myself on my NHL games for the PC/Playstation, i couldnt be 88 because Lindros was on the team. so i picked 18 because it had an 8 in it and i thought it was the coolest number out of 8,28,38,etc. if 18 is taken, i wear 81 didjuicythat 05-03-2005, 06:35 PM I wore #19 for a long time, then I switched to #79 for the past few seasons. Pavel 05-03-2005, 06:43 PM I wore #19 for a long time, then I switched to #79 for the past few seasons. You aren't Alexei Yashin are you? :) Yertle The Turtle 05-03-2005, 06:58 PM I wear 52... I wore 12 2 years in a row and scored a combined 6 goals in 30 games... Next season wore ;52 and scored 12 in 15 games... Been wearing it ever since. Mackee 05-03-2005, 10:07 PM Awesome topic! I wear #58 both as a defenseman (ball hockey) and a goalie (ice). No real significance, but how often do you see #58? I can only think of one player (J-F Fortin, Caps) who I've seen wear it. At least I think it's J-F, could be J-P. I'm sure a Caps fan will clear that up for me. Used to wear 18 and 15 when I played minor hockey. bleedgreen 05-03-2005, 10:18 PM 22. its my birthday - so it was my favorite number when i was like 5. never changed it, it was always available - eveyone else would fight over 9, 19, 10 (francis - i grew up in CT....dineens 11 and ulf's 5 were always popular). still wear it now. f1nn 05-03-2005, 10:28 PM number 4 on travel 69 in high school :D pitkanen>bouwmeester 05-03-2005, 10:28 PM 44 Pitkanen and Bertuzzi FLYLine24* 05-03-2005, 10:30 PM 14, not after any player...just liked the number and always had it. SaveByHexy 05-03-2005, 10:52 PM 72. I picked it when I played football, because I was a lineman and I had to have a number in the 60s and 70s. So, I picked it as because Ron Hextall is my favorite athelete ever. It is his 27 reversed, and he wore 72 for the Islanders. Now, I wear it for hockey too. Canadian Chris 05-03-2005, 10:55 PM I wear 11 now, and have for a number of years really. But that was interupted for a few years because our team simply didn't have a #11, so I stole #19 from another player....but I've worn #11 basically since I started playing hockey...no significant reason either really Habsfan 32 05-03-2005, 11:00 PM I used to wear 70 but I was given 99 last year but I felt I was no Wayne Gretzky and I should not wear HIS number neither should anyone else so I switched to 70 simply because it's my birth year 88 minus the day I was born 18. WVP 05-03-2005, 11:19 PM I've worn #27 for a while. Kovalev turned 27 into into a cool number during his time in Pittsburgh, but I had it before his time here and I can't remember why. anguscertified 05-03-2005, 11:37 PM 21. My birthday, and my first favorite player: Peter Forsberg. Then I learned that as a Canuck fan, liking an Av was frowned upon. :) Slats432 05-03-2005, 11:40 PM As a kid, I wore 10 for Guy Lafleur. I tried to get it when I started playing men's league...but it was gone. I have been wearing Howe's 9 ever since. Large_Farva* 05-03-2005, 11:46 PM Next season will be my rookie season as a 16 year old. The number I will be wanting will be 36 after Matthew Barnaby, 37 after Mikael Samuelsson, or 38 after Ronald Petrovicky. futurcorerock 05-04-2005, 03:45 AM It's kind of reassuring to see half of you guys not committing to consensus numbers. A good addition to the thread would be a listing of all known consistencies with numbers and hockey players (Low digits, 30's Goaltenders, etc.). Ofcourse, if said list exists somewhere Markov 05-04-2005, 06:17 AM I play defense and have worn #29 my whole hockey playing career. That's just a number that was given to me when I was little and I've worn it ever since. canadahockeygirl* 05-04-2005, 08:19 AM When I was younger, I took #4 for everything (Bobby Orr) including softball. In HS, for hockey I wore #18 (my ex and I thought it would be cute to have the same number). I took #6 (Ted Williams' 9 flipped over) for every other sport. Now, for everything but hockey I keep the #6. When I'm in net, I'm usually #1 just for the hell of it. When I skate out, I wear #47. It was issued to me, but I kept it on becuase it's Aaron Downey's number and one of my friends is close with him and assures me he's a good guy. Isles72 05-04-2005, 08:49 AM I usually try and grab #12 or #14 when the coach comes in and dumps the jerseys on the locker room floor and says ''help yourself'' should rephrase that- ''usually tried'' been a long time since that scenerio presented itself :) jb** 05-04-2005, 09:12 AM 24 -bob probert 17 craig berube 7 - chelios prefer 24 when available HSHS 05-04-2005, 09:49 AM Awesome topic! Jean-Francis... 58 = Good football number at least. HSHS 05-04-2005, 09:50 AM 8 Started playing last year... Eminger wears 8 in the AHL and last year for the Caps... Ovi wears it for Russia... I figure one of them will wear it in the future. Yammer 05-04-2005, 12:42 PM Pretty straight forward question. What number(s) do you wear and what is the significance, if any. 37, for no reason other than I bought my helmet used and it had 37 on it. Isn't that a terrible reason? But I have no favourite numbers and no un-favourites except for 88 because of the white supremacist association. Pensfan86 05-04-2005, 10:39 PM Initially when I started playing travel hockey, I went with 26...this is probably when I was 11 or so. I kept that number until I was 16 too, then switching to #3 which I kept. For my highschool team, I tried to pick 26, but there was someone in the organization who had that number already, so I reluctantly went with 86. However, this ended up being a good move on my part because I was easily remember by people being that 86 is a fairly uncommon number. However, if I had the chance to do it all again, I'd have gone with #92 or something like that...i dunno why, but the higher numbers always intrigued me Erngueva 05-04-2005, 11:39 PM The number I wear on my sweater is 73. The significance is that it is my birth year and nobody that I know wears that sweater number. I am so unique ;) Not to burst your bubble but i know a goalie who wear this number. Actually, he write it everywhere he can :) . For me it's 31. No particular reason. Joey13 05-04-2005, 11:58 PM I wear # 13, it's always been my lucky number. It's also sort of a Bill Guerin thing as I am originally from Boston and play wing. I am playing on a 2nd team this summer and can't decide what # to wear. Maybe # 28 for Adam Deadmarsh - one of my all-time favorite players. MikeS 05-05-2005, 12:03 AM My brother Dave? born on January 4th, always wore #4. My brother Dan? born on February 10th, always wore #10. Me? Born on August 16th. Always wore #29. Go figure! Hyped 05-05-2005, 12:09 AM #19 cuz that's what my old man wore in his days... JeffW 05-05-2005, 05:38 AM I wear 13 because I was born on Friday the 13th. Dominus 05-05-2005, 07:53 AM I have not even played hockey in a team, just floorball, but my jersey numbers still come from my hockey idols. #2 - Brian Leetch, NY Rangers #14 - Raimo Helminen, Ilves & Team Finland Mxpunk 05-06-2005, 01:41 AM 21...for Tony Granato... John Flyers Fan 05-06-2005, 12:41 PM I've always worn #11. No real significant reason. Only times I haven't worn #11 since I was about 8 years old was for an all-star game, where multiple players wore 11 ... or for a few games when our trainer at Penn St. lost my white jersey ... had to wear 13 for a bit. Luongownage 05-06-2005, 01:19 PM I wore 19 in our beer league last year, and am going to wear 44 for next year. 19 for Naslund, but myself being a defensman, I didn't feel I had any connection to the number other than an admiration of the player who wears it in the NHL. 44 for Bertuzzi, and myself being a pyshical type player, it seems to make more sense. Steelhead16 05-06-2005, 01:27 PM Tried to wear 16 for Bobby Clarke when I was a kid or later when I had a choice. When I started playing our jersies were numbered by size, low numbers for the extra larges to high teens and 20's for the smalls so sometimes 16 was too small. I've worn 00, 4, 5, 9, 20 a couple of times, 25, 88 but 16 off and on for about 15 different years. My kid wears 55 for everything but that's for a baseball player but he wears it for hockey too. JFPIV 05-06-2005, 03:43 PM 22 - It was assigned to me on my first team, and it's just been the number I've always worn ever since. 22 is a grinders number, which is what I am, so it stuck. Sulayman 05-06-2005, 05:13 PM #17 predhead1 05-06-2005, 06:15 PM Currently wear #33 - just what was given to me for my latest team. wassup77 05-06-2005, 08:45 PM #19, Sergei Fedorov was my favorite player when I was a kid so I said to the coach that I want #91 but he said I could only pick under #50 So I took #19! Death Taxes Conacher 05-07-2005, 06:30 PM #17 Zetterberg4Captain* 05-07-2005, 07:36 PM I wear #16 because its the number my dad wore when he played hockey. Zoo 05-07-2005, 10:24 PM Never played ice hockey... but all other sports I've played .... I've always used #7 Fedz 05-08-2005, 03:12 AM 43....My Dad's Fire Department Number. Ruckus007 05-08-2005, 09:44 AM 77, which I orginally got playing Pop Warner football. No real signficance, when it was jersey issue time I was hoping to get 50 or 53. I was third in line so I was somewhat confident I'd get it. 53 went first, 50 went second. 77 looked cool so I took it and it stuck. Took it over to hockey (and track for that matter). budscweizer16 05-08-2005, 11:38 AM i've always liked 16 best and 96 2nd best, not sure exactly why, think maybe 16 for Bobby Clarke when i was younger, and Bure who wore 96 for a little while. althought there not even my favorite players. i've also worn 3 which has grown on me. RorschachWJK 05-08-2005, 12:13 PM 13 and the significance is obvious, eh? Edit: and this is for volleyball, I haven't played hockey in...umm..15 years, only a little bandy. Probably would fall on my ass if I tried now :) BuppY 05-08-2005, 12:37 PM 98!! I been wearing this number sice 1998, when I started playing Ball Hockey in a league, it's just one of my favorite numbers and I hung on to it since than. :D Pinto 05-08-2005, 03:07 PM Always wear #17 or #7 for every sport PanthersRule96 05-08-2005, 04:55 PM I used to be #44 because Rob Niedermayer was my favorite player for years in Floriday, but then I was issued 66 and wore that, and then was and had been #96. It's Pavel Bure's number from when he was electric back for the canucks a long time ago and Bure was my favorite player in FLA. Last year though, our coach wouldn't let us pick any high numbers so I went with #16. I'm gonna be #96 again next year though. PanthersRule96 05-08-2005, 04:57 PM i've always liked 16 best and 96 2nd best, not sure exactly why, think maybe 16 for Bobby Clarke when i was younger, and Bure who wore 96 for a little while. althought there not even my favorite players. i've also worn 3 which has grown on me. HAHA, no way, are u serious? Check out my post right above LOL. nic29+ 05-08-2005, 06:34 PM In any sports I played I always wore #10. CHIEF22 05-09-2005, 12:25 PM Awesome topic! He wore 12 for the Portland Pirates this past season. Just a piece of usless info. Thornton97 05-09-2005, 02:26 PM #22 - comes from my lacrosse playing days and the legends of #22 on the lax field at Syracuse...ironically where I am now. If that's not available, any palindrome will do...i've worn 33, 11, 44 before markov` 05-09-2005, 04:47 PM #11 It's my birthdate (May 11th), and the number of my favorite player (Saku Koivu). Jackson Ranger 05-10-2005, 09:56 AM 22 for Nick Fotiu. Scoogs 05-10-2005, 03:00 PM My first choices were always 7 and 10.. Thats like 90% of everyone so I wont count those. 9, 22, 87 are my other favs because its my birth date. (September 22, 1987) And now Crosby made #87 famous... I should use it more often :handclap: MAF 05-10-2005, 07:57 PM #42 - Hey, I'm a mathematician, therefore I HAVE to take that number. Otherwise I'd coose #84, because that is a) my birth-year and b) 42*2 :) Bruinaholic 05-10-2005, 09:19 PM 55 in roller and Dek hockey. I dunno why but i like it,besides Gonchar and Jovo wear it(2 of my fav Dmen) Pavel 05-11-2005, 08:14 AM 55 in roller and Dek hockey. I dunno why but i like it,besides Gonchar and Jovo wear it(2 of my fav Dmen) Jason Blake too :handclap: Tarkus 05-11-2005, 12:17 PM #15--looks like I'm the only one to have that so far. My older brothers wore #15 playing ball, so I decided to carry on with it as well. sveiglar 05-12-2005, 05:59 AM If I was anywhere to wear a number, it would be 39. Not particularly sure why. StanJohns 05-12-2005, 11:02 AM wore 9 for the majority of my "career" LOL joined a team called The Aeros, and out of respect to Gordie, changed to number 12. our league commish is Andre LaCroix MHJS 05-17-2005, 07:42 PM Number 2. No way was it after any NHL player. Favorite team was the Leafs at the time and Garth Butcher was #2. Just liked the number. Was also issued #12 one year as well, so it's kinda partial to me. dawgbone 05-20-2005, 10:28 PM 98!! I been wearing this number sice 1998, when I started playing Ball Hockey in a league, it's just one of my favorite numbers and I hung on to it since than. :D Damn... me too! It started because I always used to wear #9 because Gretzky was my favorite as a youngster (we couldn't pick our own numbers, they were standard issue 2-16 + 2 goalie numbers), and one year I got shafted with #8 and had my best season. The year after that I finally got to choose my own number, and couldn't decide between 9 and 8, so I combined them. This was all for lacrosse though, and in Hockey I was always a goalie so I usually had 1, 29 or 30... I was never picky as a goalie for some reason. saba 05-21-2005, 05:05 AM #4 s stevens, vinny, blake, saba. -nuff said Kirk- NEHJ 05-22-2005, 01:23 PM 29 I was a huge Gilles Gilbert fan when I first started playing as a goaltender (I wore 22 as a defenseman in atom and mites as a nod to my fave blue liner Brad Park), but another kid on my team (a forward no less) had no. 1. My coach was a Maple Leafs fan, and at the time, they had a pretty damn good goalie named Mike Palmateer. He tricked my 8-year-old self into taking no. 29 by talking up Palmateer like he was the second coming of Georges Vezina, but I got a shutout in my first-ever start, so after that, there was no way I was giving it up. A lot of people thought I was a Ken Dryden fan because of it, but never had any use for that habstool. It was all Palmateer. SoundwaveIsCharisma 05-24-2005, 12:03 AM 16, after my two favourite players on my favourite team. Stastny's 26 and Sakic's 19, that and when I first played hockey my coach didn't like people having numbers over 30. Chootoi 05-24-2005, 01:06 PM 35 - just call me Shabbybulin Skk82 05-24-2005, 04:54 PM previously i wore 46, paying tribute to orr and lemieux. i like 14 and 36, too. letsgoflyers75 05-24-2005, 06:20 PM I wore 21 for a while, but I've just started wearing 11 recently. 21 is my birthday, but when I joined a new team I someone already had it. I picked 11 and I've been playing better since, so I'm not changing anytime soon. nyrmessier011 05-24-2005, 06:58 PM #13 I've broken my wrist twice...maybe it's time to switch :dunno: J-D 05-24-2005, 11:41 PM #7 or #88 Parrish 05-25-2005, 01:20 AM #11. I took this # because of Darius Kasparaitis's time in Pittsburgh. He's my favorite player and I simply like it. I swap around from team to team often though and if it's taken I wear either 37 or 61 TopeHabFan 05-25-2005, 03:10 PM #85 When I was younger I used to wear 5. Then swiched over to 8 later on, but after both of those numbers were take i picked 85 :P. 5 = Doug Bodger(Haha best player on NHL All-Stars '95) 8 = Mark Recchi(My fave Hab from way back) King'sPawn 05-25-2005, 04:04 PM Haven't played in years, but plan to in the near future. My favorite number when I played was 11. I wore that number during my best season of roller hockey, and was among the leaders in scoring. So, I'll be gunning for that number. Kenadyan 05-25-2005, 04:21 PM #9 - the last 10 years or so for all the roller and ice hockey teams I've played on. I lived in Westland, Michigan (Mike Modano's hometown) for a number of years and I'm the same age as Modano, so I guess that's why I wear it. #19 - for softball. Robin Yount and Paul Molitor were my favorite baseball players growing up. Yount wore #19 until he retired. Molitor wore #19 in honor of Yount when he signed with the Blue Jays (and won a WS in that number). BlueBleeder 05-25-2005, 07:18 PM #11 - Brian Sutter or #7 - Phil Esposito drewcon40 05-25-2005, 09:18 PM When I was younger, I would always hear that numbers that were above 30 for skaters were "showboat" numbers. I know Gretzky took 99 because 9 was taken and he loved Howe. So I took #2 always because it was a modest number and #1 was usually reserved for goalies. My brother also wore #2 (we weren't on the same team). Growing up a Ranger fan, Tom Laidlaw and of course Brian Leetch also wore #2 so I just stuck with it. If #2 was gone, I just doubled up and went with #22. Dr GLU 05-25-2005, 11:18 PM I have pretty much settled into wearing #81 or #14. I started with #8 when I started playing since it was my favorite prospect's number (Jokinen). After a couple seasons someone else asked for #8, so I gave it up for #14 (for Stu Barnes). When our team ordered jerseys, I decided to take #81 for no particular reason. I still wear #14 when I sub for other teams (unless it's taken). Avery4Byng* 05-27-2005, 01:26 AM hockey - 87 or 33 lacrosse - 24,14 or 32. Accord 05-28-2005, 12:43 AM 32, no significance, just been wearing it all my life and it stuck. johnny cool 05-28-2005, 01:09 AM I was #11 on every team i joined by complete chance when I first started playing sports. one year when i played high school soccer though, i had to wear 13 because 11 was taken. those are the only two numbers i've ever worn Martytoof 06-09-2005, 09:19 AM #25. Its how old I was when I started playing hockey last year. I've had no reason to change. RKells 06-09-2005, 09:39 AM When I was young I was always 8. in High School I had to change my number Sophomore year, so I chose 19. In college both were taken my freshman year so I picked 18 have stuck with it ever since. hockeystud938 06-13-2005, 02:38 PM i wear 87 just because i got that number when i first started and i jsut stuck with it Sixty Six 06-13-2005, 09:21 PM i wear 87 just because i got that number when i first started and i jsut stuck with it with a limited number choice to make this season, i went back to #74. I was a big Andrew Ference fan when he was a pen, and he was a paul coffey fan as was i in my younger days. And since 7 and 77 were taken, i used 74 Coffey's number in Boston his final year DisgruntledHawkFan 06-13-2005, 11:08 PM I used to wear 20, but lately I've been 27 and my brothers been 26. zetterberg40 06-14-2005, 04:11 AM 95 many reasons, kinda just like seeing it Belanger25 06-14-2005, 04:45 AM Lucky Luc's 20 has been the number I've played with most. I've also have played with 8 for Cam Neely. 28 for Eric Lacroix. 44 for Yanic Perreault. I ended up one season with number 49 because the stupid rink lettered the jersey wrong. A couple of times I have sported the number 10 as it was half of 20. Besides that my number has been 20. Pantokrator 06-14-2005, 06:31 AM I used to wear #23 for Ilkka Sinisalo, then it was often taken because people liked Michael Jordan (I live In North Carolina), so then in a fortune cookie it told me my lucky number was #57, so I chose that. The only problem with #57 is that it is rare for any NHL player to wear it. I think Goran Bezina was the only one to wear it last year. Bouchard 06-14-2005, 08:10 AM Used to Wear #18 Kritter471 06-16-2005, 06:56 PM I wear 47 'cause I grew up in a family of Star Trek nerds (where 47 is integrated into EVERYTHING). It worked its way into my internet handle years ago and has become one of "my" numbers. In other sports, I've worn 9 (little kid soccer) and 17, 21 and 22 (soccer subs). I'm happy with all those numbers. zanysportslady 06-17-2005, 10:17 AM 4 DJmastamind 06-17-2005, 12:26 PM I wear #7. Don't really have any reason why, but I do well with it, so now its more a superstition type thing. I've also worn #45, 11, and 8. teamstag 06-19-2005, 03:36 PM I wear #22. Favourite number. Buumbaclat22 06-23-2005, 05:25 PM 22 --> my birthday and my very lucky number as well Lobstertainment 06-23-2005, 07:08 PM I wear number 20 I was born on November 20th If not 20 I'd wear either 1 or 30 the classic goalie numbers. DaveG 06-23-2005, 08:06 PM 81 - Birthyear was 1981 so it just made sense to me. I wore 14 a few seasons, typically when I had a coach that was anal about having his team wear only numbers under 40. caldercup0 06-23-2005, 10:46 PM I wear 29, no real reason, I'm a goalie and when I picked it i didn't want a number in the 30's. I've been "issued": 1, 5, 33, 40, 55 (Never Wore It) I also chose #49 and #87 a long time ago Johnny Postman 06-23-2005, 11:44 PM I wore #10 all through high school just because it was available '88-'92 ever since I started in men's leagues I've been #13 we didn't have #10 jersey made up. besides it's lucky I've only sprained my ankle once and pulled my groin once. :dunno: SLake 07-01-2005, 07:44 PM I've worn #12 the past eight years in honor of Hartford Wolf*Pack captain Ken Gernander. IMO he is the best captain in professional hockey and is a true leader by example. Prior to wearing #12 I have worn #'s 1, 5, 11, 13, and 111 (I had #1 in a youth league, I didn't play for two season's before returning and someone else was wearing the number. Because the #1 was centered on the back of the jersey, I decided to wear #111. It was a youth rec league and they let the number slide.) JOHNBOY 07-20-2005, 09:48 PM #4 hockeyplaya46290 07-20-2005, 10:09 PM 1, my favorite goalies are #1 (Aebisacher and Irbe). When i was a foward eariler i wore #9 dont ask me why it was always 9 though. KStewart113 07-20-2005, 11:09 PM # 44 for me...mainly because when I first started Esposito's 7 was taken. So Todd Bertuzzi was the main inspiration, as i'm a power forward as well. nikebauer 07-21-2005, 09:02 PM Either 02, 16, 17, or 19 First numbers for sports when I first started, soccer, bball, hockey etc Magnus Fulgur 07-21-2005, 10:38 PM Great posts, everyone! It's fun to read the stories... I wear #15 1.) Milt Schmidt 2.) My birthdate (Ides of March) 3.) Heater! I used to be a goalie, and my number was #35. UserName 07-21-2005, 11:02 PM i wear 16 or 5, or try to anyway nikebauer 07-22-2005, 12:42 AM 69 is not a bad number either Leaf Lander 07-22-2005, 03:27 AM 71 equipe 07-22-2005, 05:01 AM 18 or 6. 18 has been my number a long time, and has been very lucky for me, Baseball and Hockey. 18 red has been good to me in the casino too, OilerNut* 07-22-2005, 11:29 AM I wear #79 because I was born in 79, The oilers joined the NHL in 79 and because I graduated in 97 which in reverse is 79. Enough reasons? mik3 07-23-2005, 04:36 PM I was one of those dorky kids when I was young who wore his favorite players number, which was 66. Then around Bantams I went to 29, mainly because I wanted to change and pulled it out of the box. After high school when I got more into roller I combined the two and now wear 95. PACaptain 07-23-2005, 05:44 PM Great topic because it allows everyone to tell their story but in most cases, no one cares but them. But its always fun to tell your story and I had to oblige. High School- #8 (assigned but I'm not a big guy so I always took it as a Mark Recchi reference) College- #21 (very special to me because my coach said he gave it to me because of he knew another American born Italian player who did well in that number, I hope it was Eruzione but my teammates said it was Cammi Granato) Men's League- #38 or #19 (Pavol Demitra is one of my favorite players and many of my favorite players including Brad Richards, Marco Sturm, Steve Yzerman, etc. and my mother's all-time favorite Jean Pronovost wear 19) I always changed my number at each level because its like each number was based in that particular time period and it was time for a new one at a new level. Thanks for obliging my self indulgence. Vincent_TheGreat 07-23-2005, 07:05 PM Number 7. My birthday is the 7th and I've just always worn it! Cwood2 07-24-2005, 01:15 AM #29. I originally wore #6, then flipped it to wear #9. When I got to college I was issued #29 as a freshman as they didn't think I'd see the ice much... ...I wore that over-sized goalie jersey for four years and proved 'em wrong. Everytime I put it on, I had that reminder. On our team, we had a really fast kid that wore #55. The significance? The speed limit at the time he realized he was fast. Cocky, but hilarious. Only a hockey player.... Pure Rock Fury* 07-24-2005, 01:42 AM #17 My first year of mite hockey was after San Jose's first year in the league. My favorite player was Doug Wilson (and still is) and I wanted number 24. As it turned out, Doug Wilson Jr. was on my team, so I figured he would want his dad's number and I went with 17 instead because of Pat Falloon (in the longrun I did the number a lot more justice than he did). I could've used 24 if I wanted too because Doug Jr. ended up using number 48, twice that of his dad's. I got a pretty good laugh out of that one. I wore 24 a couple of times because of playing with a someone having seniority over me who wanted the number (a tournament team one summer, and my first year of midget). Ric Flair 07-24-2005, 02:41 PM 26 Buya89 07-24-2005, 03:15 PM Pretty straight forward question. What number(s) do you wear and what is the significance, if any. 89 :handclap: Psycho Papa Joe 07-24-2005, 05:18 PM Pretty straight forward question. What number(s) do you wear and what is the significance, if any. 26 Taking the 5th on the significance part though, but it has nothing to do with any player who ever wore the number. 26 WTF:madfire: Mac225 07-24-2005, 05:20 PM 2-cause its Ohlund's number 24- Day i was born on 89- Year i was born in and 91 just cause i like high numbers. Jeff Shafer 07-24-2005, 06:57 PM the past 5 years i've been wearing 93 in a rec league and in my high school. I was assigned that number and it just grew on me and i've really started to like it... mymkovski 07-24-2005, 07:16 PM It has been and always will be #4...no reason whatsoever, I just think the #4 is a powerful number. HF_Rangers 07-24-2005, 11:42 PM #33 3's my favorite number and I play goalie for our makeshift roller hockey team... so 33 looks better on a jersey. Ric Flair 07-25-2005, 07:40 PM 26 WTF:madfire: You like that? FlyersProspect2 07-25-2005, 08:59 PM playing on my bantom team I wore number 2 for the past few years. In my freshman year in high school(this past school yeah) I got number 7 (Thought I would add i got the most playing time of all freshman too :D ) . So now I call myself the Michael Vick experience of my high school's team :D Pulfy14 07-25-2005, 09:06 PM I like wearing #14(stajan, and because i just like it) and #20(Bob Pulford,I may be related to him lol) firstroundbust 07-28-2005, 07:04 PM #3 ya, I am a winger too. How you like that? wedge 07-28-2005, 08:20 PM 95 knittingonskates 07-28-2005, 08:26 PM I wear 89 for Rockhampton District and Queensland State Girls team's because it's the year i was born. I also wear 14 for my CQ Girls Team the Dolphins, in reference to one of my favourite players Matt Stajan. :) I'd play in 37 but damn Justin has that.... Occasionally also in 87 as my friend gifted me her jersey when she moved over seas  and that was her number. Sasky. Jacques Plante 07-28-2005, 09:09 PM I'm a goalie and always wore #1 from Novice until Midget. berney fkaj 07-28-2005, 09:11 PM number 11....stupid keyboard won`t let me do a number sign viking 07-30-2005, 09:04 PM 21 GermanDevil 07-31-2005, 11:05 PM From 1997 to 1999 the #9 Then I changed my team and there the #9 was not free, and so I´m wearing since six years the #81 Jennifer 07-31-2005, 11:14 PM i was never picky about my number in softball as long as it was a multiple of 5 but for soccer i was always #15 up until I graduated...its just my lucky number and my birthdate (6-15-83) Volcanologist 07-31-2005, 11:15 PM 45 Default101 07-31-2005, 11:36 PM #12... worn it every year for every sport since i was 6... and i'm a pens fan so i thought it was an awesome coincidence that pittsburgh won crosby with the #12 ball :amazed: Sebastien Centomo 08-01-2005, 12:50 AM 6, 3, or 15. I always prefered 6 when I was playing hockey. If someone already had it, 3 was next and then 15. As for reasons, 6 because my first year of hockey I was six. 3 because two 3's make a 6. And 15 because of Dmitri Mironov, who I coincidently shared a birthdate and position with... plus he was just bad ass. Azdinator 08-01-2005, 04:06 AM 56 all the way ! :p: Freddie Mercury 08-01-2005, 07:36 PM #2 on defence #87 on forward TheAnalogKid 08-12-2005, 03:48 PM 32, as a tribute for the year my grandmother was born. YoungJames 08-16-2005, 02:31 PM I wear #19, for no particular reason. Sure, Joe Sakic and especially Steve Yzerman had an influense when picking the number, but I´ve allways considered #19 to be a cool number to wear compared with #6, which I could never have . I´ve been wearing #19 for 4 seasons now, and will propably change to something else next season. Hedberg 08-16-2005, 04:59 PM 16 maz-23- 08-16-2005, 05:22 PM started with the 23 changed to 10 in highschool, 42 in college and now i´m somehow stucked on 15 :) :dunno: Canadian Game 08-16-2005, 06:17 PM Players: 17 (Born April 17) Goalie: 31 Murphy 08-16-2005, 11:12 PM This past winter my 10 yr old son played AA atom and was given # 7. I started playing again after 7 years off and was given a choice of a few numbers. # 7 was available so I took it to be the same as him. He thought it was pretty cool. He had a pretty successful year and did the number proud, me not so much........ :shakehead Famous Flames 08-16-2005, 11:32 PM 23 - my daughter's bday is Feb 3. Barbara Underhill 08-22-2005, 10:15 AM 22, just cause Leetch was 2, and when i was young i knew me and him couldn't have the same numbers if we played together on the rangers, now he's with the bruins :( and i'm a career beer leauger !! Sabrebat 08-22-2005, 11:24 AM 16 - when playing forward (Pat Lafontaine has always been my favorite player). 3 - when playing defense (cause someone always has seniority on me and takes 4).
