THE BUZZ
Unless they finish the exhibition season poorly, defensemen Sean Brown and Ray Giroux are odds-on favorites to be the Devils' third defense pairing. The off-season signing of Brown, a free agent, appears to have been a good one. The 6-3, 210-pound veteran has played very well. He also came to the aid of Marshall when he took on Brashear in a fight Tuesday night. Giroux has moved the puck well and avoided glaring mistakes.
AN ICE TOUCH
One reason the Devils practiced at Continental Airlines Arena instead of South Mountain Arena in West Orange is the new ice surface.
"This was good for the ice. The game (Tuesday) was the first time it was skated on," Burns said. "Green ice. We chop it up so they can build it up and get it ready for the season."
INJURY REPORT
Winger Christian Berglund remained off skates for the second day after he was banged around Tuesday night against Philly. ... Igor Larionov (groin) skated with the team yesterday but did not take part in most of the drills. ... Turner Stevenson (groin) remains off skates and is looking doubtful for the season opener in Boston on Oct. 8. "I haven't seen Turner," Burns said.
