WhamBamCam8 09-27-2003, 02:47 PM Forgive me for being a little bit more than skeptical on this one. While I am very excited about Bergeron's apparent ability, I have to wonder if OC is just trying to "distract" us....Now, many of us here and I'm sure everywhere have been screaming about the lack of a # 2 center. Bergeron's presence gives this organization a "hey look how smart we are" appearance. If he sticks for the ten games, it also buys OC and company time in their pursuit of a legit #2 center. I just don't want Bergeron here for all the wrong reasons. I think he's being used as the "wool" that OC is trying to pull over our eyes.
Gee Wally 09-27-2003, 02:57 PM having seen the kid with my own peepers...
the only question I have is .."is this for real ? "...
The kid looked that good...
I don't thin anybody really expected this...My guess is that if MOC had any hopes it was for Zino being the bailout..
If Bergeron continues to do what I saw ..and others (aside from MOC) saw than this ain't wool..
It's can an 18 year old do this now every night for an entire NHL marathon ?
I simply don't know that...

I've yet to see him and I'd be somewhat skeptical if he was a mid-first round pick; this is based on nothing but feeling but I think he'll end up back in Junior hockey (probably get the minimum games thing- 9 or 10 games and head back); he'll probably hit a wall. If he makes the roster I wont be suprised anymore but if he gets 40 points or more I'd be stunned. This stuff doesn't happen anymore- certainly not like the 70's or 80's when you'd see even a Luc Dufour make the team and put up 30 points as a second rounder. The game is dramatically different. I would love to see it- but moreso see an Oates type of player down the line would be immense. Put me down for skeptical too but hoping to be wrong.
Jeff from Maine 09-28-2003, 03:47 AM Not at all out of the ordinary!
I rmember that last year we were saying much the same about Jurcina.
The year before it was Hilbert who had the collective panties of this board in a bunch!
It happens "all" the time. A hotshot young kid plays well for a 3 WEEK stretch in camp. Games against teams filled with AHL fodder, BTW. He has yet to play against as NHL TEAM! This happens in EVERY teams camp EVERY year!
It matters little what he does in these camp days. The real question is this:
Can he give us the NHL CALIBRE production that a 2nd line center HAS to give us over the course of 80+ games in the regular season, as well as the postseason?
He has to make an impact if he is on the roster come opening night!
I have seen him in person in one game. In that game in Bridgeport, he played well for the most part, BUT...he looked totally lost in his own zone on a number of occassions. Looked very confused and unsure of his assignment on defense.
He SHOULD be a good one down the line, but IMHO, he isnt at all ready for the NHL yet.

Well, he may not have met your particular expectations of a second-line centre last season, but he did make an impact throughout the 2003-04 season. He's improved dramatically in his defensive end of the game. His work ethic alone (IMO) helped him be ready for the NHL last season, and make it through the whole season.
It's shortsighted (IMO) to say that him playing well in camp scrimmages and exhibition games means diddly because he's playing against lesser talent (AHL fodder, etc.) in those games. The fact remains that throughout camp, he completely outshone EVERY other player (in a BIG way) in camp, including our beloved franchise player and captain.

I put little stock in it. I dont care if its Thornton stinking up the joint, Bergeron excelling, Jurcina playing apprehensive or Tom Fitzgerald showing a scoring touch.
Those games mean very, very little. Production means nothing, and how they play against other teams fodder means little.
I was fla out wrong on Bergeron, about being ready for NHL last season.
But my overall assessment, so far, is dead on from where I sit.

Black Eye 01-05-2005, 09:58 AM Regardless of whether various people think Bergeron is good, bad, or average, we can simply enjoy what the kid does on the ice and leave it at that. It really only matters what happens on the ice, not what happens on the message boards.

Very good point. From what I've seen of Mr. Bergeron, he is indeed "getting it done" on the ice, and it's great that we have him on the team(s) we cheer for.
in answer for Wham's question...
NO

Is 39 good enough? :joker:
I think DKH has rediscovered his sarcasm! ;-)

It always is until someone proves you wrong and then you recant. I am not going to play this game all off season with you, though. I will continue to let Patrice Bergeron prove you wrong over and over and over. The kid excels in every position he is in. To think he wont be more than a tweener between the third and second lines is a laugher.
It is time to start realizing that this kid is the real deal. Maybe he doesnt have the hype or the blazing speed or shot that you need to see but neither did a lot of GREAT NHLers.
I am going to sit back and enjoy you eating crow.

Purchased your tickets to his Hall induction ceremony yet? ;)
He is a guaranteed HOFer if someone listens to you guys.

I`ll greatly enjoy sitting back with my fork full of crow as well.
But guess what....at least I dont hide behind anything. I give my opinion and own up to it when I am proven wrong. When evidence is given I`ll gladly admit when I am wrong. I wont shy away from giving an opinion.
Its much easier to come on here and say that someone is gonna be great. Because if it happens, *you* can say "I told ya so." And if it doesnt happen, *you* can say that he underachieved.
And even worse is those who dont give opinions and then decide to claim they knew it all along.
BULL CRAP!
I`ll speak my opinions and glady be wrong. Anyone here who thinks or says that they are right all he time/ most of the time is a flat out liar and unwilling to admit when they are wrong.
I see these people here quite often.

me and JFM dead wrong- never, ever, ever happen again. Thank goodness Bergeron missed so many games or I'd have be stunned.

Line of the century???
"IF HE STICKS FOR TEN GAMES"
a world cup championship, WJC and 70+ NHL games, including a game winning OT play-off goal....Yeah, I'll say he stuck......
Jeff from Maine 01-06-2005, 09:30 AM Funny thing is that I am just one of a number of people of people on this board that felt Bergeron wouldnt be in Boston the whole season. I LOVE IT!
Its kind of flattering in a strange way!

I admit...I thought it was a smoke and mirrors thing OC was pulling...A "Hey, look what we got with the guerin comp pick"...I would have bet the ranch Bergeron would be here the maximum number of games before he lost his minor league eligibility and then sent down. I also thought it was OC's cheap way of adding a forward on the cheap...I was dead wrong....Hey, there's a first time for everything... :lol
