DJ Spinoza 09-27-2003, 06:05 PM In the three games, Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 83/87 shots.
1.33 GAA

The latter two were against pretty good NHL competition. In those games he stopped 61/64 shots.

Sign him now. Even if they don't play him this year, he still should get a contract and at least his 10 games. In my opinion, he benefits more from playing in the NHL for 45-50 or so games than Juniors. He is ready to face NHL level competition. Playing against players who he is a lot more developed than wouldn't do him much good. I think it helps him best to play against NHL players now. Fleury might add to his experiences by leading a successful Cape Breton team and playing in the WJC's again against talented players, but it is my opinion that playing for 45 or so NHL games will do him more good than the former.
BTW, thanks to PhantomPenguin for the idea to do this (I saw your post in the prospect forum and decided to go through and do it myself(...You were 1 shot off.
The Tang 09-28-2003, 05:51 AM i agree completey. he has performed far above expectations, and his stats back it up. plus, the final team in front of him will be better with mario and straka constantly in the lineup. people keep saying he can be ruined by going into the nhl now, but the way he has played paired with his demeanor,i dont think that will happen with him.
also, check out the post gazette gazette, go to sports and then columnists. Mark Madden wrote an article about the Pens should sign fleury. its basically the sequel to his take the goalie article before the draft
usmhuskies 09-28-2003, 06:46 AM B's fan here...I saw Fleury play last night against the Caps, this kid is the real deal IMO...The only goal he gave up was on a prefect shot by Halpern...
Big McLargehuge 09-28-2003, 07:20 AM He was 50 for 53 going into last night's game. He stopped 34 of 35.
I think my stats are correct...may be wrong though but unless a shot was taken away...
DJ Spinoza 09-28-2003, 07:38 AM I just went by the links from the site, unless I misread one or added wrong.
The numbers remain the same whether it's 87 or 88, so let's just give him an extra save. I think he earned it anyways.
I'll update after tonight's game. I think Fleury will toss a shut out tonight.:yo:

I can feel it too :D. I also think if he got a shutout tonight, we will definitly sign him. Also, that'll prove that he can withstand back-to-back games, although it is only one series of them. Let's hope for 0-1 goals allowed for Fleury.
tom_servo 09-28-2003, 08:00 AM I think, according to the law of averages, Fleury will let in about three tonight. But the Pens will win.

I agree with the first sentence.
Regarding the second, I think we will lose.
DJ Spinoza 09-28-2003, 03:11 PM Well, Fleury stopped 24/29 shots. For the preseason:
2.25 GAA
.922 SV%
IMO, he still should get his 5-10 games.
And I think we all agree he should be signed, because it would take effect later anyways if he doesn't play...
Russian Fan 09-28-2003, 04:01 PM Well, Fleury stopped 24/29 shots.
I just dont understand why you put an 18 year old goalie to play 2 exhibition games in 2 night.
I really think that it was a weak decision to put him in the net tonight

That may have been the point.

No way. The Pens need to see how he can handle playing in back-to-back situations, especially with the second night on the road.
It would be unwise to just sign him to such a huge contract before getting as much of an idea as possible to see how Fleury can handle the intense situations.
Big McLargehuge 09-28-2003, 06:23 PM It's a good idea to see how goalies can handle BtB games but still.
No one should expect an 18 year old to do that. Hedberg almost never would play in BtB situations, I can't imagine someone 10 years younger doing that.

This kid need to take the step 1 by 1 & not being a 60 games per season in the NHL @ 18.
This kid made the management believe that with games in every 4-5-6 days , he can do well in the NHL. With Caron ready to play 40 to 55 games (depending if he bulks up his endurance) , Fleury can back it up & learn well.
There's absolutely no need to see if a 18 year old kid can handle the pressure on BtB games.
If you want to burn the kid , do this often.
50 goalies outside the NHL can do well on 1 GAME , not so many can do well in 40 - 50 - 60 games with hard uptempo of the NHL.
Alex Kovalev 09-29-2003, 08:58 AM I think we should sign him and let him rotate with Caron for starters. Let Fleury play 8 games and by then, if he is playing confident keep him, if he shows that he is not able to keep up, send him back to Cape Breton.
JDB3939 09-29-2003, 10:21 AM Is it just me or does it sound like Fleury is letting in a lot of shots from around the top of the circles or just inside of them?

It seems to me there's a couple of good reasons why the Pens decided to do this...
First, as has been said before, they wanted to see how he'd handle it. I know you say later not to do this often, but this was just one time.
Second, and I think this is probably the real reason, CP had a pretty good idea he wouldn't look so hot in his second start. Would it surprise anyone if they were trying to get him sent down to save the money (they already have 2 goalies making NHL money) and because the Pens have more than a little hesitation about throwing an 18 year old kid to the lions?
All that said, I still think he deserves a tryout contract. He's been exceeding expectations (with a smile on his face) since he was 16.

The real question is, why is the defense giving up such scoring chances?
We should be keeping things to the outside. And at least blocking some of these shots.

Yeah, the D really did bad last game. I still think Fleury did ok, not bad, but better than average. Granted, I wasn't there to see it, but the D was horrible by the sounds of it.

There is also a difference between a Joe Thornton slap shot and a slap shot from some 18 year old from the Q...might take him a little to adjust, not too long i'd imagine
