Mr. Canucklehead 09-28-2003, 03:14 PM With contract talks at an impasse between Canucks management and R.J. Umberger, and speculation beginning to abound that Umberger could sit the year and make himself a free agent, I believe his days in Van City are number. Well...his days as part of the Vancouver organization. So make an offer on Umberger.

nucks2001 09-28-2003, 03:16 PM I doubt if we could even get a 2nd round pick for him at this point. Teams know must be traded and unless a lot are interested the value would be low. That being said he could still be part of a deal to bring in a 2nd line scorer at some point during the season.

I don't think Rucinsky would be enough. Atleast not in my opinion.

Doghouse 09-28-2003, 08:22 PM To Van:
F Milan Kraft
F Kris Beech
To Pit:
F RJ Umberger
Umberger's from the Pittsburgh area. Might want to be closer to home.
Beech is from around Vancouver. Might be beneficial to him. Kraft's not thriving in Pittsburgh. Maybe a change in scenary would be good for him.
But two youngsters for one. Vancouver could use the depth.

Deal, but why would Penguins do this again?
i think Beech and Umberger are about even.

I'd do that deal in a second, but it favors Vancouver easily. We'd have to throw in some more...what would Pittsburgh be looking for? Because we have cheap players in spades, and they like their cheap players...

Well, Beech and Kraft seem to not be fitting into the Penguins plans. Kraft's labeled a power forward, but acts nothing like it to prove otherwise. Beech has tons of potential but he also shys away from things.
IMO, the only thing these two guys have going for them is their age and potential. But, for some reason, Kraft's never thrived in Pittsburgh. And Beech is not looking like the centerpiece of the Jagr deal anymore.
Umberger's young as well, but he could thrive in Pittsburgh, given the fact that he's from there. He knows the city. He would be immediately accepted by the fans (much like Ryan Malone has been throughout the Pens training camp [he's from Pittsburgh too]).
Since the deal is so lopsided, just add in Sopel.
Vatican Roulette 09-28-2003, 09:35 PM If he's traded i see him being part of a package deal.
Like Sopel + Umberger for a right winger.

Something worked around Kraft-Umberger...I don't see CP giving up on Beech yet, since he was the centerpiece of the Jagr deal, that would almost be admitting failure.
Plus, Beech can still be sent to WBS w/o needing to clear waivers I believe, where Kraft can not.
However, if contract negotiations are the issue, I don't know that Umberger will find it any easier in Pittsburgh to get $$$.
Evilo 09-29-2003, 05:54 AM No I could see a Kraft-Umberger swap or something like Christensen+ late pick for Umberger.
Christensen is the WHL scoring champ, and doesn't fit in the Pens' plans.
Mizral 09-29-2003, 06:57 AM As a Canuck fan, I wouldn't want to trade RJ, period. I don't think Burke wants to either, unless he's swinging a homerun right winger deal that would obviously involve Umberger as a throwin.
For allthe gripe RJ is getting, he had a great season in college last year - his stock hasn't dropped at all, just the fact that he can't get signed is the problem. A 2nd round pick? Fuhgettaboutit.
I would consider moving him mind you. I'd like to get Mike Johnson out of Phoenix (maybe as a deadline aquisition?), and I'd move Umberger to get him, but beyond something like that (good 2nd line RW'er), I'd just as soon as hang onto RJ and try to get him signed.

i wouldnt say he doesnt fit into their plans totally. maybe not this year, but in a year or two i would say so.
i definitely wouldnt do beech+kraft fopr umberger. what people have to realize is that even though umberger is from pittsburgh, we're not dying to get him, and were not going to over pay for him.
i dont think Van would go for Kraft straight up, so maybe kraft+ later round pick?
or maybe Umberger and Sopel for Morozov + a late pick? (i'll probably get hell for this one)

Beech and Kraft for Umberger does not make sense for Pittsburgh as it is likely Umberger is not quite ready to play in the NHL yet. I would be very satisfied with a Beech/Umberger even up deal....maybe Pittsburgh throws in a mid rounder. Beech needs a change of scenery and Umberger has been backed into a corner by Burke. Fair deal and possibly a good one for both sides. This deal has been proposed for a year and a half now. Would like to see Beech on the third line in Vancouver with Linden and Cooke. Would be an interesting combo. He needs to upgrade his faceoff skills though. Would potentially make Chubarov expendable as well.
Evilo 09-29-2003, 08:55 AM I wouldn't add a pick to a Beech-Umberger swap.
And yes Christensen said it himself. He's overaged now in the WHL, and he seems desillusionned about playing one day for the Pens.

Do you realize Johnson is Phoenix's best scorer and had a great season last year?
Why would Phoenix trade Johnson for an unsigned-ready-to-become-UFA prospect?
The Pucks 09-29-2003, 10:12 AM Do you realize Johnson is Phoenix's best scorer and had a great season last year?
Why would Phoenix trade Johnson for an unsigned-ready-to-become-UFA prospect?
Because he isn't a "ready to become ufa" prospect. He has 9 months till this can happen. He has to sit out the entire season and not play pro hockey anwhere. Add to that the pending labour situation and if he sits out it could be 2 or more years before he see's a dime.
Umberger is not in the drivers seat, yet.
Evilo 09-29-2003, 10:33 AM Read again PUCKS. Miz was suggesting the deal as a deadline acquisition. He wouldn't be 9 months away from the UFA status.
