I've seen this done at other message boards, one poster goes on "the hot seat" for 24 hours and answers all questions put to him/her. There is the option of saying a question is "too personal." What do people think about this? In particular, what do the mods think about it.

I don't really think there are any rules for who can/cannot. When the original idea was started, people were volunteering others, but then somebody said that people must volunterr themselves, so I see no reason that a mod could not do it.
