PRE-GAME REPORT (7pm)
Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers
"Gervais' played well," said Stirling. "There's a reason why he still here. He made a great play on Bergie's goal. The same can be said of how Sean has played as well and of all of our young guys looking for a spot."

Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers (7pm)
Today's Game:
The game will be the first of two against the Flyers in Pennsylvania as the two clubs will meet once again on Thursday in Hershey, PA. Both contests will be webcasted at NewYorkIslanders.com.
Ricky's Turn:
Last week, Stirling said netminders Garth Snow and Rick DiPietro will alternate games for the remainder of the pre-season. That means it's DiPietro's turn in goal tonight as he tries to separate himself in the tight goaltending duel this preseason.
Lappy a No Go:
Former long-time Islander Claude Lapointe will not dress for tonight's game. He suffered a lower sprained ankle while walking down the steps in his home over the weekend.

Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 01:58 PM Here's for 5-0!!! Anyone tune in a few minutes early on newyorkislanders.com?? They've got this freaky peaceful sounding music on there. It's gonna put me to damn sleep!!
-TL
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 02:10 PM Already off to a good start...down a man 20 seconds in. Not the best way to start a game!!
-TL
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 02:17 PM Isles gotta work on their discipline. Can't be taking all of these penalities.
-TL
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 02:25 PM This is getting ridiculous. The Isles need to smarten up and get to playing some smart hockey. 3 penalties in 10 minutes is unacceptable.
-TL
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 02:34 PM Great goal by Radek Martinek on the rebound on the PP...1-0 Isles
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 02:45 PM End of the first period, 1-0 Isles. Gervais with an assist, first point of the preseason. Anyone else think that this kid's shot of making the team is becoming greater every game??

Pecalicious 09-30-2003, 02:53 PM I don't think we have the second coming of Bobby Orr here .....
However...... I like Gervais but he will need to develop some comfort with his flair he is playing soundly but I liken him to the early Dick Tarnstrom needs to get some experience with the big boys but not full time yet.
I think that Bergenheim, Papinaeu, are our two spot takers, When Weinhandle returns if Czerkawski is a flop (probably he has been non existent so far so he will cease to exist for us.

That is true. I haven't seen much of Gervais personally to judge him though. But reports are praising him that it looks like he could be a possible 7th defenseman, perhaps replacing Timander.

Hahn's had an interesting interview. Did not think Gervais has a chance and mentioned his early mistakes in the game, also that Czerkawski has done little and Stirling put Asham back with Yashin and Kvasha and gives the impression Czerawski could go back on waivers to save money.
I disagree with Hahn on Czerkawski, he has played two games?
He was correct about Papineau's production in games under Stirling, he did not mention Papineau's production in the Tigers playoffs.
So far seems like the goaltending has been sharp.
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 03:15 PM Glad to see Cairns sticking up for his teammates and trying to get in the face of Brashear. He was virtually invisible lastseason after the shoulder injury and I'm glad to see he's back to his physical ways.

Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 03:30 PM 1-0 after two periods. Isles are lucky they still have a lead with all of these penalties that they are taking...
-TL
Pecalicious 09-30-2003, 03:32 PM I don't feel satisfied with hearing that they have been down 5 on 3 in every pre season game so far!
Stirling's system is obvious to me..........
Take as many penalties as possible to keep your team from getting into any kind of rhythm.
Where's the discipline?
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 03:47 PM It was bound to happen...1-1 on a John LeClair goal...

They are taking undisciplined penalties, they do seem to be relying too much on DiPietro and not getting enough consistent pressure on Philadelphia. Still, it's preseason and there are players out on both sides.
Only thing I really do not like is DiPietro seems to be overhandling the puck according to the broacast.
1-1

Good goal on a counter with Blake and Peca. Still not much consistent pressure, Isles defenders seem to be doing a lot of shooting.
Let's see if they can contain the Flyers with the trap or if it can force a turnover to make it 3-1. No Hamrlik, Jonsson or Timmander.
2-1 third is what this trap is designed for, let's see if it makes the rest of the game easier for DiPietro.
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 04:09 PM Blake pots on in to make it 3-1 off a great feed from Papineau. If this doesn't cement his spot on the team, I don't know what will...
-TL
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 04:11 PM Geez, these Isles aren't making it easier for me. Aucoin on the PP off a Yashin rebound...4-1 Isles
-TL
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 04:18 PM Put it in the books...Isles 4 - Flyers 1. Great job by the Isles as they roll on the preseason to 5-0
-TL
NYIsles1* 09-30-2003, 04:20 PM It's preseason and a lot of regulars are not playing but this is very impressive how they are closing out this game.
ISLANDERS WIN 4-1 !!!!!
5-0-0-0 IN PRESEASON !!!
DiPietro was very good.
Looks like Czerkawski was demoted to fourth line at the end and did not see much time.
Three stars:
Blake 1g 2 assists
LeClair 1 g
Peca 1 g
2-3 pp
7-7 sh (2) 5-3's

blitzkriegs 09-30-2003, 05:40 PM TL/NYIsles1 -
thanks for the updates...it was nice to read everything as it happened during the game. Eventhough i am reading this at 10:30 EST.
TL - you raise a good point. the undisciplined penalties are a bad omen. that's not gonna fly again this year. especially after guys like Aucoin, Scatchard, and Weimer took a host of bad penalties/wrong time of game last year. We need to avoid that big time.
NYIsles1 - i like the emphasis on DiPietro. He 'sounds' like he is playing well. Again, it's not full NHL squads out there, but the Sterling system (like i said over the summer) is benefitting this team overall and the players are making a smooth transition thus far.
as far as chow, he really hasn't done much thus far. However, the media seems to be catering to the BST kids and their role during training camp. the media has shied away from storylines involving yash, peca, weimer, jonsson, niinimma, etc...yes, there have been stories about them, but they have been minimal compared to those on Paps, Bergs, Gervy, goaltending, etc...
chow on waivers? interesting....he has a reasonable salary that may make someone bite on him...
Tom Liodice 09-30-2003, 05:46 PM Anytime Blitz. Glad to help out with the updates. As long as I'm available I plan on trying to do these all season. The Isles have been very undisciplined all preseason and have given up many powerplays. Hopefully they can control this when the regular season starts up. I'm glad I can help out in any way...

cool deal....i'll be attending most games, but this was a treat. i did the same for the Pit game @ wheeling...
blitzkriegs 09-30-2003, 06:10 PM back to the game - what about the too many men penalty? what was the deal with that? who was the culprit? what did the radio guys say?
this is our 3rd of the preseason already. this was a rampant problem with lavy last year, so i'm concerned this is going to carry over again...

I was at the game and DiPietro's puckhandling was brutal. Gave it away 5 or 6 times, very lucky that Flyers didn't turn one or two into goals.

I'm not sure about this. Weideman and King sounded confused as well. All we know is that there apparently were too many men on the ice. This is another problem with Isles discipline, they gotta try and control it. Simple things like changing lines have got to be cleaned up before the season starts up.

The Isles were on a PP. They had 6 men on the ice for at least 15 seconds, maybe more. Finally an Isles player realized it and took off for the bench. That is when the refs finally realized it.

It was fun listening in and catching the last two peirods of the webcast. When the games go on televsion I usually watch there. As for Czerkawski we'll see but are they going to release him based on a handful of preseason games? He can lead the preseason in scoring or play invisible. Bottom line is only Stirling knows after three exhibition games if he is doing enough to keep his spot.
Seemed like in the second peirod the announcers did not like how DiPietro was handling the puck, but he was making a lot of saves, tough to tell on a webcast which were tough or not but the announcers felt DiPietro deserved first star. I think the player they called for the too many men was Hunter, not sure if he served it or someone else did?
As for the media, there is basically Hahn and the a.p covering most of these games so were only getting one viewpoint. Wish the News, Post and Times did some games, especially in a division city like Philadelphia.
