Oh well, no big loss. As for this only being a typo, NHLPA did this last year with a few guys like Sandy McCarthy, who was listed as a Bruin about 2 days before it became official.

I'm assuming that if this is correct, this is a trade that the NHLPA got a heads up on... If thats the case, I wonder what we are getting back.

Yeah, I'm starting to think this may be an error too, they have his status for 2005/2006 listed as "Unsigned". You'd think that they would have his compensation there if he did in fact sign with the Rangers.

Well, isn't he a Restricted free agent... so the canucks could have traded his rights to the NYR, and therefore he isn't signed yet... but is property of the Rangers.

Malik is a restricted free agent who has been made a qualifying offer by the Canucks, so his rights may have been traded.
It would support the rumour that the Niedermayer signing (with the Canucks) will be announced tomorrow. We'll see.

Malik has until the 5th to file for group V status (10yrs in the league, under minimum salary)... he can opt to be a UFA.

otherwise he's back on his qualifier (or negotiate a longer deal with the canucks).

Well, even though people put down Marek, he brought a lot here. He just didn't fit anymore, and that's fine. I think he brought way more than I ever expected and was apart of some big Canuck moments. The pass to Morrison in game 7 against the Blues or the OT winner against Detroit. He was also a class act off the ice.

I think most people say this coming. Malik, was set to make at least $1.1 mil with the Canucks, too much for a 6th defenseman IMO, especially when he doesn't bring any much needed toughness. Solid player, just not what the Canucks need.

Here is how it works.

Malik is a potential Group 5 Unrestricted Free Agent - he can decline the Qualifying Offer and declare himself a UFA on or before August 5, 2005. He may have done so and accepted an offer from the Rangers. In that case no compensation to the Canucks and Nonis had nothing to do with it.

Here is the explanation from NHL.com:

POTENTIAL GROUP 5 FREE AGENTS

The following players: (i) have completed ten pro seasons or more (NHL or Minors, excluding Junior hockey), and (ii) in the 2004-05 season earned less than the NHL average salary of $1,390,896 and (iii) received a timely qualifying offer.

These players have the right to elect once in their careers to become Unrestricted Free Agents. If such players do not elect to become Unrestricted Free Agents, since their prior Clubs have tendered them qualifying offers, such players shall remain subject to draft choice compensation and right to match as applies to Group 2 Free Agents. I do think he's somewhat underrated, but my last memory of him will be being caught flat-footed as the Flames scored their game 7 OT winner. He's a decent depth defender, but certainly expendable. We can only hope this paves the way for Scotty.

Big? Yes. Strong? Yes. Physical Presence? Uhhh...not so much.

I'll miss the big guy, to be honest. 2.5M is way too much for him, but he's a useful player. made some nice defensive plays despite his lack of physical play, and didn't take too many penalties, which is an underrated skill IMO.

But he skates like a moose and doesn't hit at all.

In the new NHL, his skill would be totally diminished. I can see forwards blowing past him easily on two line passes. The Rangers should have signed a pylon.

I think the whole "new NHL" is overrated. It may open up slightly. I've heard in Europe they got rid of the red line and it caused the game to get more defensive. Sure they're going to crack down on obstruction, but we've heard that one before. Malik will still be servicable, but still definately not worth $2.5 million. Also players like Hatcher won't suddenly become useless.

jeffbrown, Malik was a Restricted Free Agent with the option to choose Group V unrestricted free agency (as a 10 year pro making less than average salary). He had until Aug 5 to declare his UFA. The Canucks did qualify him at the minimum, and his agent guessed (correctly) that he could do better as an UFA.
It is possible that the Canucks were talking to Marek's agent about upping Malik's contract, prior to getting serious with Niedermayer.
If Niedermayer is signed, Malik (as a left-side dman) becomes superfluous.
My guess is that Nonis told Malik's agent he was close to signing Niedermayer, so Malik flew the coup.

Nothing against Malik, he gave us what he had and seemed like a good teammate, but he's not worth 7.4 million over 3 years. The Rags currently have 7 d-men under contract...

Not an impressive list, but does Malik make the top 4 on the Rangers? Maybe more to the point, do you really want someone with his footspeed logging top 4 minutes in a more open NHL?

The dollar amount may be an overpayment, but the real stupidity is in the CONTRACT LENGTH.

If you think Malik is slow NOW, imagine him THREE YEARS OLDER.

i wouldnt be against putting allen in malik's spot beside jovo, i think hes ready and his style is similar to (a bigger, more physical) lachance, so it should be a good fit. if not, then a ufa like witt would be a good fit too.

on malik's contract, i wonder if sather confused malik with some other dman, because malik is not physical at all. to give him $2.5M per, sather must've think hes getting ohlund or something. yikes!!

Wow, what do you guys expect on your team, 20 all stars? Malik was a solid d-man. Pair him with an offensive-minded partner and he is very effective. Lack of footspeed, no hitting? What about his defensive smarts? Thats more important that anything. His size, reach, and defensive zone coverage is what made him a solid #4 or #5 d-man. Allen should step into his role nicely.

That being said, Sather did overpay him.
