Malik a RangerLarge_Farva* 08-02-2005, 04:11 PM according to NHLPA.com... WORST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!!!!! anguscertified 08-02-2005, 04:11 PM what will be become? the #2 on the Rags? :) Large_Farva* 08-02-2005, 04:15 PM If they are tanking.. My bet is #7 colonel_korn 08-02-2005, 04:22 PM http://www.nhlpa.com/WebStats/PlayerBiography.asp?ID=3498 Here's his profile, listing him as a Ranger. Don't think any of the news outlets have picked up on it yet, thanks for the scoop. :) Snap Wilson 08-02-2005, 04:25 PM It's a typo on the NHLPA site, guys. Hedberg 08-02-2005, 04:25 PM Oh well, no big loss. As for this only being a typo, NHLPA did this last year with a few guys like Sandy McCarthy, who was listed as a Bruin about 2 days before it became official. ilugram 08-02-2005, 04:49 PM I'm assuming that if this is correct, this is a trade that the NHLPA got a heads up on... If thats the case, I wonder what we are getting back. colonel_korn 08-02-2005, 04:52 PM Yeah, I'm starting to think this may be an error too, they have his status for 2005/2006 listed as "Unsigned". You'd think that they would have his compensation there if he did in fact sign with the Rangers. Crazy Joe Davola 08-02-2005, 04:52 PM It is a mistake. NHLPA.com frequently has errors. 2005/06 Compensation: Unsigned ilugram 08-02-2005, 04:55 PM Well, isn't he a Restricted free agent... so the canucks could have traded his rights to the NYR, and therefore he isn't signed yet... but is property of the Rangers. Steveorama 08-02-2005, 04:59 PM Malik is a restricted free agent who has been made a qualifying offer by the Canucks, so his rights may have been traded. It would support the rumour that the Niedermayer signing (with the Canucks) will be announced tomorrow. We'll see. NFITO 08-02-2005, 05:03 PM actually poster on the trades board pointed this out, and he's right: Malik has until the 5th to file for group V status (10yrs in the league, under minimum salary)... he can opt to be a UFA. otherwise he's back on his qualifier (or negotiate a longer deal with the canucks). incawg 08-02-2005, 05:04 PM can't say i'll lose sleep over it either way ilugram 08-02-2005, 05:51 PM The Moje has confirmed it on MOJO 730 saying that he confirmed it with an agent. Malik signed with NY as a FA QuickDynamite 08-02-2005, 06:01 PM Another great signing by the Rangers!! I'm glad. Malik was getting too expensive under a cap, i've never been a big fan of his. anguscertified 08-02-2005, 06:01 PM farwell Marek!!!!!!!!! Bobby Lou 08-02-2005, 06:03 PM I can't believe this is anything but an error on the NHLPA page. If not though...looks like we're opening up a spot on our left side and a little bit of salary room. :) Biatcheslov 08-02-2005, 06:12 PM yeah, I can only read this as opening up the door for Scott to come into that left side. :) SopelFan* 08-02-2005, 06:13 PM Well, even though people put down Marek, he brought a lot here. He just didn't fit anymore, and that's fine. I think he brought way more than I ever expected and was apart of some big Canuck moments. The pass to Morrison in game 7 against the Blues or the OT winner against Detroit. He was also a class act off the ice. Thanks Malik. RobsonStreet 08-02-2005, 06:15 PM Carry on my wayward son. Peter Griffin 08-02-2005, 06:16 PM I think most people say this coming. Malik, was set to make at least $1.1 mil with the Canucks, too much for a 6th defenseman IMO, especially when he doesn't bring any much needed toughness. Solid player, just not what the Canucks need. Wetcoaster 08-02-2005, 06:21 PM Here is how it works. Malik is a potential Group 5 Unrestricted Free Agent - he can decline the Qualifying Offer and declare himself a UFA on or before August 5, 2005. He may have done so and accepted an offer from the Rangers. In that case no compensation to the Canucks and Nonis had nothing to do with it. Here is the explanation from NHL.com: POTENTIAL GROUP 5 FREE AGENTS The following players: (i) have completed ten pro seasons or more (NHL or Minors, excluding Junior hockey), and (ii) in the 2004-05 season earned less than the NHL average salary of $1,390,896 and (iii) received a timely qualifying offer. These players have the right to elect once in their careers to become Unrestricted Free Agents. If such players do not elect to become Unrestricted Free Agents, since their prior Clubs have tendered them qualifying offers, such players shall remain subject to draft choice compensation and right to match as applies to Group 2 Free Agents. The players listed below have until August 5, 2005 to elect Group 5 status. .................... VANCOUVER Marek Malik (Group 2). http://www.nhl.com/players/freelist05.html incawg 08-02-2005, 06:32 PM I do think he's somewhat underrated, but my last memory of him will be being caught flat-footed as the Flames scored their game 7 OT winner. He's a decent depth defender, but certainly expendable. We can only hope this paves the way for Scotty. More than anything, I will miss your Gretzkesque moments, Marek. Farewell! Peter Griffin 08-02-2005, 06:33 PM Everyone sit down! According to NHLPA's website, Malik has signed for $2.5 mil a year! What happened to the lockout ending these rediculous contracts?!?!??!?! http://nhlpa.com/WebStats/PlayerBiography.asp?ID=3498 puckwhore 08-02-2005, 06:35 PM it's true, my friends. http://www.newyorkrangers.com/pressbox/pressreleases.asp?id=1672 colonel_korn 08-02-2005, 06:36 PM https://www.nhlpa.com/WebStats/PlayerBiography.asp?ID=3498 $2.500.000 for Malik. Sather is a man gone mad. NeoCanuck 08-02-2005, 06:39 PM Uh, Do we get any type of Compensation? 2.5 Million? My God.. Bobby Lou 08-02-2005, 06:40 PM Holy balls. 2.5 mill a year! So long Malik, good on you cashing in on a big pay day. I always liked the guy, but he is so not worth that much money. WE GOT PAYROLL ROOM! trbr86 08-02-2005, 06:47 PM Kudos to Malik's agent. That is highway robbery. I bet Straka signed a whopper too. I doubt this means NYR are still in the Foppa/Naslund hunt. QuickDynamite 08-02-2005, 06:48 PM WTF!!? Did I read that right? Marek Malik has just signed for $2.5 million? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAA!!!!!!!!!!!! Sather has gotta be the biggest retard in the NHL. parabola 08-02-2005, 07:13 PM good god. cyrisweb 08-02-2005, 07:40 PM Does it state how much his contract is anywhere else other then nhlpa.com? cuz 2.5 has GOT to be a mistake.. I just can't believe anybody would give him more then 1.5.. I mean seriously.. wtf?? I would have been upset if the Canucks signed him for more then 1.1-1.2 :biglaugh: Bertuzzi44 08-02-2005, 07:45 PM malik sucks neways, we dont need him hes big and slow, was never a fan of his QuickDynamite 08-02-2005, 07:47 PM I agree. This must be a mistake. I can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to sign him for that much. west_coast 08-02-2005, 07:57 PM I'm thrilled by the signing 'cause it frees room for Niedermayer, but how come this isn't on the Nucks' website? It doesn't make sense. Hasbro 08-02-2005, 08:11 PM Sather is a man gone mad.Gone? Got to make both our fanbases feel a tad more relaxed. RobsonStreet 08-02-2005, 08:13 PM Not a mistake. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=132238 The best quote there? "Marek is a big, strong defenseman who adds a physical presence to our blueline," stated Sather. Knucklez 08-02-2005, 08:14 PM Hmm, I wonder if Sather even knows that there's a salary cap now? cyrisweb 08-02-2005, 08:21 PM Obviously not.... Rotting Corpse* 08-02-2005, 08:26 PM HAhaha. Big? Yes. Strong? Yes. Physical Presence? Uhhh...not so much. I'll miss the big guy, to be honest. 2.5M is way too much for him, but he's a useful player. made some nice defensive plays despite his lack of physical play, and didn't take too many penalties, which is an underrated skill IMO. But he skates like a moose and doesn't hit at all. Eddie Vedder 08-02-2005, 09:49 PM 2.5 million for marek malik makes me cough up vomit. Im literally speechless. jeffbrown 08-02-2005, 10:21 PM I must be missing something here. Was Malik UFA? Bubbles 08-02-2005, 10:22 PM In the new NHL, his skill would be totally diminished. I can see forwards blowing past him easily on two line passes. The Rangers should have signed a pylon. dittohead 08-02-2005, 10:27 PM he was signed for a 3 yr, $7.4 million contract.. so a little bit less then $2.5 million/yr ping 08-02-2005, 10:28 PM I think the whole "new NHL" is overrated. It may open up slightly. I've heard in Europe they got rid of the red line and it caused the game to get more defensive. Sure they're going to crack down on obstruction, but we've heard that one before. Malik will still be servicable, but still definately not worth $2.5 million. Also players like Hatcher won't suddenly become useless. Steveorama 08-02-2005, 10:36 PM jeffbrown, Malik was a Restricted Free Agent with the option to choose Group V unrestricted free agency (as a 10 year pro making less than average salary). He had until Aug 5 to declare his UFA. The Canucks did qualify him at the minimum, and his agent guessed (correctly) that he could do better as an UFA. It is possible that the Canucks were talking to Marek's agent about upping Malik's contract, prior to getting serious with Niedermayer. If Niedermayer is signed, Malik (as a left-side dman) becomes superfluous. My guess is that Nonis told Malik's agent he was close to signing Niedermayer, so Malik flew the coup. Avery4Byng* 08-02-2005, 10:49 PM Malik's new contract is a joke. Too funny, I hope the Rangers enjoy his foot-speed. ha. MLP* 08-03-2005, 12:08 AM Nothing against Malik, he gave us what he had and seemed like a good teammate, but he's not worth 7.4 million over 3 years. The Rags currently have 7 d-men under contract... Marek Malik D 6'5'' 235 Ostrava, Czech. Jason Marshall D 6'2'' 200 Cranbrook, B.C. Jason Strudwick D 6'3'' 225 Edmonton, Alberta Tom Poti D 6'3'' 215 Worcester, Mass. Dale Purinton D 6'3'' 226 Fort Wayne, Indiana Darius Kasparaitis D 5'11'' 205 Elektrenai, Lithuania Karel Rachunek D 6'2'' 212 Gottwaldov, Czech Not an impressive list, but does Malik make the top 4 on the Rangers? Maybe more to the point, do you really want someone with his footspeed logging top 4 minutes in a more open NHL? Ironchef Chris Wok* 08-03-2005, 12:53 AM The dollar amount may be an overpayment, but the real stupidity is in the CONTRACT LENGTH. If you think Malik is slow NOW, imagine him THREE YEARS OLDER. KStewart113 08-03-2005, 12:55 AM they signed him for 2.5M...thats ridiculas Russian_fanatic 08-03-2005, 01:23 AM I'm so happy he's gone! Can't wait till we play NYR and all of a sudden Malik freezes. Hoss 08-03-2005, 01:45 AM Wow, so much contempt for a pretty damn good player. Clearly he will receive more compensation for his services in NY then he could have hoped for in VCR, my guess is they expect to give him a #1 or #2 dman role. Good luck Malik, as long as it doesn't come at the expense of the Canucks! Edler Statesman* 08-03-2005, 01:52 AM Carry on, my wayward son. (http://members.shaw.ca/kmad/Malik3.wmv) SedinFan* 08-03-2005, 01:56 AM Thank 'God' (if there is actually one..which there isn't) that Malik is gone. Vman 08-03-2005, 02:13 AM So with Malik gone, who will replace his spot? Jovo ____________ Ohlund Sopel Allen Salo The Canucks have a big hole to fill. myrocketsgotcracked 08-03-2005, 04:36 AM i wouldnt be against putting allen in malik's spot beside jovo, i think hes ready and his style is similar to (a bigger, more physical) lachance, so it should be a good fit. if not, then a ufa like witt would be a good fit too. on malik's contract, i wonder if sather confused malik with some other dman, because malik is not physical at all. to give him $2.5M per, sather must've think hes getting ohlund or something. yikes!! DuklaNation 08-03-2005, 02:18 PM Wow, what do you guys expect on your team, 20 all stars? Malik was a solid d-man. Pair him with an offensive-minded partner and he is very effective. Lack of footspeed, no hitting? What about his defensive smarts? Thats more important that anything. His size, reach, and defensive zone coverage is what made him a solid #4 or #5 d-man. Allen should step into his role nicely. That being said, Sather did overpay him. | ||
