I wish there was a FAQ so I didn't have to post this, but anyway, I've been looking all over the 'net and can't find an answer. Does anyone know what the team name means in English? I know Novosibirsk is a city, but according to three Russian-English dictionaries, Sibir is not even a word.

According to Encyclopędia Britannica :

Russian Sibir vast region of Russia and northern Kazakhstan, constituting all of northern Asia. Siberia extends from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east and southward from the Arctic Ocean to the hills of north-central Kazakhstan and the borders of Mongolia and China.

So Sibir ( phonetic [sibi:r] ) is nothing more than correct latinization of original name. Because of tradition English language is using incorrect latinization and pronaunsuation for this word.

Novosibirsk is unoficcial capital and lafgest city of Sibir region (more than 2 mln) . That is way the team is called this way.

Sibir means Siberia - a region of Russia. The team is located in the middle of it, so the team is named after it.
