ok, here's what i think:

Pens: i'm kidna surrpised they kept buckley and bergevin protected over boileau. i thought he played well enough to be protected.

i am surprised about them protecting Buchberger, Eastwood and especially holzinger over Meloche and TK. i dont agree with that. i was hoping for holzinger to be taken in the draft to be honest.

NHL:
Ivan Novosoltsev- i knew the rumors, but i didnt think they would actually do it. i can see someone picking him up

Chris Therien: probably the biggets surprise to me. i thought that if they would unprotect someone like him, they woud deal him away first. i have a feeling NYR or Toronto will grab him.

Marius Czerkawski- MM brought him back because he played well for the isles. i'm surprised they would put him on wiavers then.

Mattias Timander- i knew he was mad, but i figured they would try and get somehtign for him. once again, expect a team looking to shore up their d some to grab him.

Brian Boucher- though not surprising, i think it will be interesting to see where he lands. maybe ST. Louis?

I am mad that we protected Holzinger over Kostopoulos.
And Eastwood over Meloche.

Koltsov - Lemieux - Morozov
Novoseltsev - Straka - Fata

well, i am hoping for Novo, Theiren wouldn't be bad either if he doesn't cost too much. Secondly Kostopolous should still be here. If Melcohe goes o wel but again he should still be here. I am happy with the list. I just hope we claim one of the two i mentioned.

i wouldnt be surprised either way if the pens take Novo.

i do disagree with protecting some fo the vets over tk and meloche, though i am not sick about. i am discouraged by the fact holzinger was protected, when he really hasnt shown much at all. doesnt fight (buchberger), not a face off man (eastwood) and i;ve never heard of him being a leader at all.

It's not the fact that TK and Meloche are exposed that bugs me... it's the fact that Holzinger isn't... and I want to get rid of him. Maybe CP is trying to clear room for other guys down at the AHL level to bump from from ECHL...I mean if this was a way to try and convince Christensen to play... I wouldn't be upset at all.

My only question is... Why the hell would you protect Buckley... no one is going to pick him. No one.

TK and Meloche would have to pass through waivers anyhow because they were sent down to wilkes barre.

Very good point. I guess we all just want to rid ourselves of Holzinger.

I can honestly say i have absolutely NO FAITH in that idiot Craig Patrick anymore.

I just talked to Craig Patrick and when I asked his opinion about you, he replied, "Who's that?" :D

Hey, Beechboy16 . . . I thought you might get in the mood to check the draft . . . since your behind about five or six picks!

Of the list, am not that surprised. I think Meloche, Kostopoulos and Petersen have all passed through waivers at some stage before. Chances are they might slip through again. I am perhaps more surprised at Patrick Boileau. I would rather have kept him protected as I feel he could prove a useful callup. He seems to be our 'Rick Berry' nominee for this year.

Looking at other teams' lists, am most interested in Ivan Novoseltzev, Jari Bednar, Chris Therien and Miro Zalesak. Also Ray Giroux was the River Rats best defenseman and was called up to the Devils last year and did well. If he is still around I'd be tempted to add his skills to at least the Baby Pens lineup. Was not sure if Tyler Bouck could add something to the mix either.

Way I see it, might as well roll the dice on a couple of prospects who might just benefit from a change of scenery. Some coaches styles might not work best for a player, or the player is played out of position etc.

I was interested to see the Thrashers thought enough of Randy Robitaille to protect him. Was wondering why the Flyers protected Slaney and exposed Therien. Oh well.

I hope the Pens roll the dice and take a chance on a couple.

I'd like to see Shane Willis in a pens uniform, although i think i remember him having injury problems...if thats the case than i don't want him, but if he is healthy i'd like to have him

After a more complete review . . . I find no one on the waiver wire that I would pick up.
Not one that could help this team IMHO. At least not any better than what we have now. As (almost) always the NHL waiver wire routine is basically a joke.
The only surprise to me was the protecting of Brendan Buckley. Plus given the choice of protecting Simpson or McKenna (I would have kept Simpson). Only because I have seen McKenna at his best.

Meloche and TK are dime-a-dozen fringe NHL:ers. No team is likely to unprotect one of their own players for either. They also need to pass through waivers somehow to get sent down; unprotecting them in the draft just means the risk of them getting picked up is smaller, since the other team would have to unprotect someone themselves.

Guys like Buchberger still have some value around the league because of their experience and leadership qualities. As for Holzinger, maybe they're just making sure they have a guy to unprotect should Novoseltsev be available.

Kung-Fu - your rationalized, thought-out logic is well appreciated in attempts to explain action. It certainly is much more valid and enlightening to read than 'Patrick is an idiot cuz...' posts. Kudos to the others as well who are on the same track. That is what separates us from being...well...Leaf fans.

After some updated info . . . (Rozsival injured again and who knows about Melichar) I just might take a flyer on Todd Simpson. It would be nice to have someone who could apply some real muscle (and play a positon). Pick up Todd Simpson expose McKenna, protect Reid Simpson . . . we could have bookend muscle guys:
This at the least has has some marketing potential: The X-Generation and The Simpsons!

The I'd pick up Ivan Ciernik just to tee-off the $parc.

Ivan Novoseltsev

Just say no.

Robert Dome was protected by Calgary, :joker:

Dome is also working extremely hard to make the team. As a Penguins fan, I'm sure you laugh because that's not something you are all that used to with young players recently.

cuz if it is, man o man is CP stupid, why the hell would one protect McKenna and Bucky over Meloche and TK...wtf, thats soo stupid.

Hmmmmkay.

Meloche, Peterson, and Kostopoulos are gone for sure now.

Yeah, I'm sure the other 29 GM's are just salivating at the thought of an opportunity to acquire these three players. Because, you know, all the other GM's are so much smarter than Patrick.

Hey, Beechboy16 . . . I thought you might get in the mood to check the draft . . . since your behind about five or six picks!

Down boy!

And if you think about it, the longer it takes him to pick his players, the more quality players are left for us to choose. So.. shhhh! :)

After looking over the lists a couple times.. The following people catch my eye:

1.] Todd Simpson
2.] Shane Willis
3.] Mattias Timander

Leaving Meloche, TK, and Petersen unprotected is really no big deal. Meloche did have a nice stint here last year, and he's really the only one of the three I could see being a decent 3rd line NHL'er.

People like Kostopolous and Meloche are a dime a dozen. They're nice players but every team in the leauge has players just like them. Buchberger brings alot more to the table than either of them do.

I don't like Holzinger being protected though, mostly only since there's not a chance in hell he'd be picked.

I really, really, really, REALLY hope we can get Novoseltzev.

I think I'd like to see Simpson more than anyone else. The downfalls; we have plenty of d-men, he's making over a million dollars, and he takes dumb penalties. The pluses; he isn't afraid to hit, he'll fight, he'll be a leader, and he'll play well in his own zone.

I think he'd be a nice addition to the D. With Rozsival hurt, he could be a possibility(depending on how long he'll be out-but between him and Melichar I'm sure we'll always have room for Simpson).

Did the Penguins really have to protect Mario?

Which gm is dumb enough to actually "try" to pick him off waivers for the waiver draft?

Actually i'd like to see that, it'd be funny.

i think he is required to be on the protected list by the nhl.

Better safe then sorry concerning protecting Lemeiux. Dudley would claim him and then we'd have to worry about all kinds of technicalities.

The Tang
10-01-2003, 05:55 PM
Why?

Cujo isn't "required" to, so why should he?

because cujo doesnt own the red wings.
the NHL and NHLPA made some special rules for Mario because when the curretn rules and regulations were made, no one was an owner/player, nor did they think there would be one. so Mario has restrictions, one such being he can not be traded, another being being that he can not participate in nhlpa meetings. i think he also must take the role of owner even if he wanted to speak from a player p.o.v.

Wow, you know it's early Fall and has been over three months without hockey when the kids are pumped about the waiver draft.

Couple notes - You don't protect guys who aren't going to be on the team (Meloche, Kostopoulos) over guys who will (Holzinger, Bergevin).

Meloche and Kostopoulos have to clear through waivers anyway since they are being sent down. I'll bet they clear through waivers. I'll even give you guys odds.

The reason I mave the above statement...take the damn Penguin blinders off for a second and look at every teams list. They all included "Kostopoulos"es, "Petersen"s, and "Meloche"s. Get this love affair with these guys over with. Reminds me of Berrygate when we lost a Norris caliber defender to the Caps for nothing. You know, the fella who played behind Doig and Kwiatowski.

I would take Novoseltsov, Bicek of the Devils or Shane Willis. As for the dman Todd Simpson would look good in a Pens uni, especially now since Rozy is injured again.

He's right. Kostopoulos isn't exactly a young player, either... that's a commonly believed Penguin myth. I think it was Dejan Kovacevic who said he's slowly crossing the line into "journeyman" status. Meloche will never amount to anything more than a marginal 4th-line talent. Petersen might catch on with another organization, but he's got too many forwards in front of him on the depth chart to really challenge for a roster spot. Send 'em all to Wilkes-Barre.

Just a thought...

Holzinger/Simpson/etc were held back, because if there is a guy CP is eyeing at the #2 spot (Novo or Timander make the most sense, to me anyway) someone has to be exposed to put them on the roster.

Anyone have a salary number on Timander?

Not too interested in Willis, seems to be pretty much a soft offense only guy--would have fit in perfectly about 8 years ago.

I think Trnka actually is/was FLA property, signed in the offseason. I agree though, with Melichar and Rozsival both injured, a vet D would be good.

Let me get this straight. We would expose Mario Lemieux (hall of famer, owner, all-time-great) in order to keep Tom Kostopoulous (minor leaguer)?

I am just trying to find the way the PR department could spin that in a positive way...

Therien would be solid addition to our def, but he may cost too much, as for the others I can only see CP possibly picking up Keefe or Novoseltsev.

But then again there's always the chance that we trade the pick or choose a player for another team and then trade them. I'm thinking that will happen with Colorado and Cujo.

ok, your making this way to complicated spence_. the point was e kept crap like moran, pushor and jonsson ahead of berry. laukanen was 31 and constantly injured. everytime he got back into game form, he got hurt again. berry, by no means anything great, is better than what we protected in the last waiver draft. i dont know why you're even bringing melichar into this when it was a comparison to laukanen.
