Jeff from Maine 10-05-2003, 04:04 AM Considering we had much debate on Sammy in the days leading up to his signing, I thought I`d post this.
Much of what was said about him is that he makes everyone better. And a couple days ago, I read a post in which the poster (I can at all remember who said it) said that ANYONE could play with Sammy.
Personally I dont agree with that.
And Gord Kluzak repeatedly mentioned throughout the game, that it takes a SPECIAL player to play on a line with Samsonov.
Sammys game is East-West and requires that he have the puck onhis blade a lot!
If he doersnt control the puck, he is not very effective. He doesnt have a great shot, so he HAS to use his razzle dazzle to get himsefl free and to allow his great passing skills to shine.
But often times, this is a a cost to the guys who play with him.
He HAS to have a spot up shooter on his line. Kluzak opening wondered about the wisdom of playing Rollie with him, because Rollie isnt a spot up one time shooter. Also, Rolston plays the same way as Sammy....wanst the puck on his stick.
Sammy and Murray are a PERFECT fit. Muzz is that spot up guy who 1 times everything he can swing at.
If Bergeron stays, he may be the pivot for Muzz and Sammy.
But that creates another problem...you take away Thorntons bread and butter!
Thornton- Rolston- Knuble
Bergeron- Samsonov- Murray
Green- Axelsson- Lapointe
Zamuner- Grosek- McCarthy
How about that?
Its a much less potent looking top line. But Sammy really takes the puck away from guys like Rolston too much.
I thknk Kluzak was bang on right about this...
It really DOES take a special player to work well with Samsonov.

Lady Rhian 10-05-2003, 04:30 AM I agree with you on this. He seems to confuse his linemates at times out there. Yesterday, two passes he made to his linemates caught them off guard, and went out of the zone. Hopefully, Sullivan will find someone who can balance out Sammy soon.
Jeff from Maine 10-05-2003, 04:46 AM His puckholding and East West style of skating create certain problems.
* Cause MANY offsides
* Force linemates to hold position for too long a period of time.
* requires teammates with very good ice vision and sense
He plays a style that few players play. That said, its tough to play with a guy who holds the puck as much as he does because you never know when he when he is going to get rid of it! You have to CONSTANTLY be aware of his movements.
His skating and puckholding cause the defense to wonder whats happening next...but unfortunately, his TEAMMATES often have to guess at that as well!

neelynugs 10-05-2003, 04:50 AM jeff, i was the one who said ANYONE can play with sammy. my point was mostly that when you play with a supreme talent, you just need to be out there assisting. samsonov is a different breed though- he might be the most unique player in all of hockey. i didn't see the game, but going into it, i thought rolston/sammy would be a very good combo b/c of the playmaking ability of sammy and that shooter mentality of rolston. unfortunately, it sounds like they don't click together at all. but i wonder if bergeron would. the kid oozes hockey sense, and seems to gravitate to the right place (except on that nedved goal :joker: ).
also, what do you think about trying green with samsonov? can't hurt, can it?
Eat It 10-05-2003, 05:39 AM I think Knuble would be a better fit with Sammy and wouldn't totally disrupt the first lines power.
Muz's sucsess comes in great part because he and Joe know where eachother are going to be, no one knows where Sammy's going.
When Knuble was on the first line last year he created most of his chances by picking up after Joe and Muz. He plays a much more reactive game than muz who sets up and knows where his pass is coming from.
Granted Knuble doesn't have the shot Muz does but that's why it'd be the second line rather than the first.

aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. I would say "I could kiss you for saying that, Jeff" but I don't want to scare you. :joker:
I thought I was the only one who noticed this. I enjoy watching him at times, other times, I get frustrated with him, as he does cause all of the above that you mentioned. Perhaps he should go back to playing with Joe and Muzz for now, and see what happens with the other lines. He is fun to watch weaving in and out between players, but there comes a time when he has to let the puck go, and give that other guy a chance to shoot it. By the time he passes it to someone, they're not expecting it, and often, the puck ends up either leaving the zone or the person he passes it to loses the puck eventually.

i thought last year in the playoffs that we shouldve put murray with stumpel because of samsonov. sammy is so fast and high tempo and stumpel is cool and more calculated. sammy needs IMO someone who just plain can keep up with him...and be more defensively aware for the risks sammy takes. a good example imo is ruchin when anaheim had kariya. nothing special-excellent defence and knows when to jump into the play. granted someone with the exact type of skillset would hinder samsonov but he's the creativity out there and just needs other guys to keep up with him and play well positionally and the chances will come IMO. i dont think murray is the guy for sammy. i think rolly is much more suited to sammys style
I have to say, I think that Sammy & Joe always seem to know what each other is doing out there together. I always have thought they have good chemistry together. How about :
Samsonov/Thornton/Knuble
Rolston/Bergeron/Murray
Zam/Green/Axe/LaPointe

i got to thinking about a rucchin type that excels with a guy who controls the puck and flow alot like a kariya or samsonov. then a lightbulb went off-travis green IS THE GUY samsonov needs. he has excelled admirably playing alongside a 'showboat' player once before with ziggy palffy-that was a AWESOME line...the more i think about it...the bigger the smile on my face gets. he KNOWS how to compliment a guy like sammy and has PROVEN it.
my lines:
Thornton-Knuble-Murray
Green-Samsonov-Lapointe
Rolston-Axe-Bergeron
1995/1996 ziggy palffy 81gp, 43 goals, 44 assists, 87 points...travis green 69gp, 24 goals, 45 assists, 69 points. trivia time-who played on the alongside these two players for the most part that year???
