For the Minor League Draft List see post #6 or the other thread.

The draft will last at least 24 rounds. You must draft 3 goalies, 7 defensemen, 13 forwards and a coach. After 24 rounds anybody that wants to continue may draft a few extra spares or a full minor league team if they wish.

Trading is allowed. With an open ended draft you can now offer 2 picks for 1 if you wish, although balanced trades are best. Really lopsided trades can be vetoed.

The time limit is 24 hours for your pick. Dropping to 12 hours if you are skipped. If you miss 2 picks you become eligible for replacement.

GM's on the 12 hour time limit:
DrMoses
VanIslander
Bergeron47

BM67, how'd you choose the draft order? And I am interested in your 3rd overall pick.
Any player from any league or era are eligible.
Then, someone will pick a presently unproven prospect or two.

The :devils are pleased to select the “best individual talent of all-time”

Mario Lemieux (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/LegendsMember.jsp?mem=p199701&type=Player&page=bio&list=ByName)

He was big and strong but rarely had to bully his way through defenders, sending them flying instead with deft fakes and dekes. In him, the attributes of the pure scorer and the playmaker were fused and his size, reach and balance made his end-to-end rushes seem effortless. In a few long strides, with a twist of those wide shoulders and quick change of direction, he found space on the ice where previously the way had been closed. Forced to choose between his accurate and heavy shot or his long arms reaching around them with a sweeping move, goalies were often left shaking their heads while they retrieved the puck from the net. Rarely has a sport's dominant player made the game look so easy and natural.

:leafs Select RW Gordie Howe
"Mr. Hockey". He played 33 NHL seasons Over five decade career Howe didn't just survive, he was dominant - on the scoring lists, in battles in the corners, on game-winning goals and when the year-end awards were handed out. He was a big man, though by modern standards no behemoth, but what set him apart was his incredible strength.
Other superstars could be deemed somewhat better scorers, tougher fighters or faster skaters, no player has approached Gordie Howe's sustained level of excellence. Incredibly, Gordie finished in the top 5 in NHL scoring for 20 straight seasons. To endure and excel, Howe used a unique set of qualities, both physical and mental.
He threw his weight around and he never backed away from a fight. Another tough star, Maurice "Rocket" Richard, challenged him with a shove and a few angry words.Howe knocked Richard out cold with one punch.
He often played 45 minutes of a game when the average total was 25. Observers noticed that when his exhausted line returned to the bench, Howe was the first to recover and raise his head, ready for another shift
Howe was selected to 21 NHL All-Star squads, 12 times to the 1st Team. 6 Art Ross Trophy and 6 Hart as the league's most valuable player. His Detroit teams won the Stanley Cup four times.

The Tabs of Cambridge have no choice but to select the three-time Art Ross, two-time Hart and twelve-time all-star who is undisputedly the greatest left winger to ever play the game

Bobby Hull

"The Golden Jet" not only was super fast but he had one of the hardest shots in the history of the game, was intimidating in his own era, scored 604 goals (even more PIM !) 1,153 points (at more than a point-per-game avg.), five-time 50+ goal scorer, 24 career hat tricks. I'm still not sure how he ever managed to win the Lady Byng given his reputation for gritty, tough play. When the NHL started calculating +/-, Hull recorded a +/- of plus 100 over his last five years (imagine what he would have had earlier in his career). He was the complete player.

While everyone has their bias, I've yet to feel that there was a series my team wouldn't be at least a 50/50 chance to win against any other team.

A dominating defense (especially top 4), a money goalie, and a solid, not neccessarily spectacular set of forwards including quality muckers, grinders, and power forwards are IMO the way to go.

You are of course, entitled to your own opinion.

Who said that my way was the only way to win? It's my opinion that my style is the BEST style, and that's that.

And this draft isn't to determine who would win the Stanley Cup... I'd like to think any "All Time" Team could win any given years Stanley Cup, that's almost a given. If it's not, you better make some better selections :sarcasm: . It's level of competition is much higher, being every player eligible who ever played against every other player. The standards are MUCH higher.

The Tabs of Cambridge select the six-time Vezina winner, including the league's only back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back winner,...

Jacques Plante

In 1981, Plante was asked what his most satisfying experience in hockey, and he said that it was an exhibition game against the Russian national team in 1965. In the first year of a temporary three-year retirement (a decade after his dominant string of Vezinas), Plante played brilliantly for the Montreal Junior Canadiens, leading the club to a 2-1 upset victory. "During the game I said to myself, 'What am I doing here? I could get slaughtered," Plante chuckled. "It was a game in which I had more pressure than any other game. It wasn't an ordinary game - it was a country against a country, and the Russians were the best team in the world at the time. After the game, (Russian coach Anatoli) Tarasov said, 'Jacques Plante is the best goaltender I've ever seen.'"

I've only read about it. After your post, I went looking for it on websites of traders and sellers of classic games but found nothing. Sometimes they have those oddball/great moments games. I know that I've seen some footage of it somewhere, I'll have to check out my old hockey video's. I also have some history of Russain hockey books that I can thumb through for info. After the first couple of rounds I thought I would do a little bit of an opinion piece on the first couple rounds of the draft, and the placement of some of the players (too high or too low).

In the first round I can see two steals, the first being Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe slipping to the number five position. This would easily be the biggest steal if it wasn't for the selection from Evil Sather of defenseman Doug Harvey at 13th overall. This was the pick of the round in my opinion as a player who is considered by many sources to be the second best defenseman ever would drop so far.

Now on to the players picked to high in the first round.... there are two names that stick out, and while many will say they were still great players (which they were) I can't help but think that there were better options on the table at the time. First Raymond Bourque, who while he was a great defenseman was in my view drafted a bit to high at number 4, especially when someone of Harvey's caliber was still on the board (I rank Bourque in the Shore range, both great players but I would have them ranked 9-15). the second mistake of the first round would be Kharlamov, who while I love as a player stood a good chance of being around later in the draft. It is really hard to judge this though given the lack of time which we were able to view him. As a late second/third round pick I would say he would be great, but at a first rounder it just seems to high to me.

Also Bossy ahead of Lafleur has me scratching my head.

VanIslander
09-29-2005, 01:14 PM
Some say Kharlamov is Top 3 all time. We tend to be NHL biased around here.
There's at least a case for it.

As for Bourque, he was excellent at every facet of the game, and the greatest d-man I've ever seen in over a quarter century of watching hockey, so... unless I go on stats, rep and era comparisons (MANY old-timers say the game is much faster, tougher, skilled today, some admitting players are much better on average now than fifty years ago.) So, Bourque didn't go too high IF one saw things that way.

And if we're picking players in their prime versus career, Bossy's rifle accurate shot over Lafleur's sweeping majesty might sway me, it's certainly close in my books, though I too would give a nod to my childhood hero (Guy).

My surprise is being able to pick up Plante AFTER Sawchuk! :D It is often said Sawchuk would have been the best ever if Plante hadn't come along and - during the same era, dominate the league so much, capturing five straight Vezinas IN Sawchuk's prime!!

Frightened Inmate #2
09-29-2005, 01:45 PM
With the Vezina at the time you have to remember that it wasn't awarded to the best goaltender as it is today, but rather it was awarded to the team which allowed the fewest number of goals during the regular season (I consider that a team achievement more than an goaltender specific achievment).

That isn't to say that Plante wasn't great, but most hockey historians seem to favour Sawchuk in terms of ranking goaltenders.

As I said, bourque was great, but at the same time I think he could have been available later in the round. This shouldn't be taken as a statement that I don't like Bourque, but from everything i have seen and read I like Howe and Harvey just that much better,

It is always hard to say, especially since the equipment changes. Heck the gear in the 80's was huge in comparison to the gear in Sawchuks time. So when we are looking at the difference in great from Roy's career to that of Sawchuk's the difference is that much bigger.

The New Jersey Devils are pleased to select one of the greatest defensemen to ever play the game, a 3 time winner of the "Gold Stick" as best European player,

Viacheslav Fetisov (http://www.russianrocket.de/Teammates/Fetisov/hauptteil_fetisov.html)

Born on 20th April 1958 in Moscow, Viacheslav (Slava) joined the Central Red Army in 1974-75 and played there for 15 years. During this time he won the national title 14 times, was awarded player of the year three times, nine times Soviet League All-Star, and was also awarded the Pravda Trophy four times as best scoring defenseman in his country. He was Captain for nine years.

A lot of people say that Fetisov, at the peak of his career, was better than Canadian legend Bobby Orr. - www.russianrocket.de (http://www.russianrocket.de/Teammates/Fetisov/hauptteil_fetisov.html)

Fetisov possessed exceptional mobility and instinctively knew when to pinch in from the blueline to create a scoring chance in the offensive zone. As a defenceman in the 1980s he had few rivals, not just at home but worldwide. - HhoF Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/LegendsMember.jsp?mem=p200101&type=Player&page=bio&list=)

“He is the kind of guy you’d like to take the formula, put it in a bottle and let all the younger players drink that formula, because there is no one like him”. - Dave Lewis, assistant coach Detroit Red Wings

Steals/Too High Round Two.

Really the first name that popped out at myself was Terry Sawchuk, often called the best (or second best) goaltender of all time falling to the 25th position. The same thing goes for Glenn Hall....

No real bad picks in this round in my view at least. There are a few steals still waiting to happen though.

C Joe Sakic

Joe is a Franchise Center he owns one of the league's best wrist shots. Has smooth skating ability and crafty playmaking skills. Sees the ice extremely well and is rarely out of position. Plays with tremendous desire and determination at all times.

The determination of Sakic and his dedication to the game, his attitude in the defensive zone (he plays against the best opposite lines) makes him a complete player, a player the team needs every game. His incredible talents for the game are now more recognized and he was once the best Canadian player in the nhl during break-away to the net.

It is fitting that the oldest university in England (Cambridge), home to a team in the oldest ongoing ice hockey rivalry (vs. Oxford), honour history by drafting both the father and the son; though they have not always been close, they have mended their relationship and the father's jersey number will be un-retired in order that he will be able to present it to his son, in the very same organization he had played his last few seasons with (the Jets/Coyotes)....

Brett Hull
The Hart and Lester B. Pearson winner is the 3rd highest goal scorer in NHL history due to a remarkablly accurate and powerful shot. Most people rank him in the bottom half of the Top 100 players of all time but when it comes to right wingers, there's only three others I'd rather have, one of whom is his new linemate in Cambridge.

Why Jagr will never be seen as the best ever right winger

Some try to say Jagr is even better than Gordie was (or used to, when JJ was hottest) but...

Jagr isn't great defensively.

For the historical record: In the first period of the first game of the 05/06 season, Jagr coughed up the puck on a bad play and it immediately led to a goal against as Forsberg to Gagne cost the NYR a goal.

Sorry, Les As de Quebec. I don't think Jagr should have been drafted before Jari Kurri. If we could quantify offense-defense excellence on a scale of 1-to-100, Jagr would be like 90-30=120 while Kurri would be 75-75=150. 150>120. Kurri a better hockey player than Jagr.

uh, i guess history will show... Jagr just scored the tying and go-ahead goal for the NYR in the season opener....

that supports the contention that he is soo good offensively that it makes up for any mistakes he makes defensively...

He is in a scoring "slump" careerwise some have said, yet he still is the highest scoring right winger over the last five seasons combined.

He's Top 50... but I just like Kurri more, and would have drafted him over Jagr if I had had the chance in the 3rd round... Kurri was a complete player, amazing away from the puck too and on the pk.

:leafs are proud to select Johnn Bucyk

"The Cheif" was a skilled left winger who was (at 6', 215 lbs) the largest of his day. He was a tough battler, who could beat you with his acurate shot or with a bruising hip check, he was rarely penalized. Johnny was known for his clean, fair play, but could be a hard hitter when necessary. In 1971, he won the Lady Byng Trophy for combining a high standard of play and gentlemanly conduct. Bucyk scored 556 goals and 813 assists in 1,540 regular season games, and he had 41 goals and 64 assists in 124 playoff games Bucyk was the oldest playerever to get 50 goals for the 1st time at age 35 and after age 32 he score 30 goals in 7 seasons
When he retired at age 43 he was the nhl 4th all time scorer proving that the race to the hall of fame goes not always to the fastes but to the steadiest

First All-Star Team Left Wing (1971)

Sorry for the wait guys. Looking for some well rounded defenseman for the blue line Les As is proud to select 10 time post season all star... Earl Seibert. It was in the Windy City that Seibert established himself as one of the best defensemen of his era. He was named to the First or Second All-Star Team each year between 1935 and 1944, a feat surpassed only by Gordie Howe, Maurice Richard, Bobby Hull and Doug Harvey. Seibert was generally regarded as second only to Eddie Shore in terms of skill and rugged play, and Shore once confessed that Seibert was the only man he was afraid to fight. Defensively, Seibert was one of the best shot-blockers in the game, and he could move the puck just as quickly as anyone.- HHOF

well we should try to check the draft every few hrs

in the am at lunch at diner time before we go to bed

if we know our oicks are coming up

do our homework and pick the best player that fits our team

if you wont be online for a long stretch send a pm to somome like bm67 or maxwell edison go kimjohson or two of them so you can get your player enjoy the day and still let the draft proceed without you.

The New Jersey Devils are pleased to select a 9 time winner of the Izvestia Trophy as leading scorer in the USSR

Sergei Makarov (http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1983/83231.html)

"Makarov became the best right wing in Europe. After the tragic death of Kharlamov he became the successor of this great player. His marvellous stick handling, unbelievable speed and scoring instinct made him one of Viktor Tikhonov’s most dangerous weapons. He became assistant captain and silenced the criticism of the past." - russianrocket (http://www.russianrocket.de/Biography/hauptteil_biography.html)

"An excellent skater, Makarov is the prototype Soviet-trained winger. He mixes outstanding speed with rock-steady balance and with a chippy approach that makes him impossible to intimidate. He skates with the apparent belief that every puck he shoots should go in the net, and every pass he makes will find the tape of the intended teammate's stick. His confidence is formed from years of unparalelled international success." - 1993-94 Hockey Almanac

"Chelyabinsk native Sergei Makarov was a masterful one-on-one player with magical hands who could make the most incredible moves. He always put up big numbers regardless of what linemates he played with." - World Cup Hockey (http://www3.telus.net/worldcuphockey/klm.html)

As g.m. of the Tabs of Cambridge, I should protest my organization's otherwise unanimous decision as to who to draft in the 6th round, a Vezina-winning goaltender I didn't like early in his career until he knocked my socks off the year I graduated high school, 1987, with 40 wins. Yet it was nearly a decade later when I finally publicly admitted his greatness as he played 76 consecutive games for the Blues (a team I'd detested) and was solid as a rock for the team.

Grant Fuhr
A winner is a winner. He's one of the few goaltenders to record 400 wins and is the league's winningest playoff goaltender in terms of games won and five Stanley Cups he played a significant role in. Always a presence on the ice, he had a great stick that netted him 48 points off of long passes which would be ideal in today's new NHL.

BM67 -

Jerome Iginla: “Iggy” combines deceptive speed, strength, tenacity and great hands to pose a threat every time he’s on the ice. He’s a rock-solid, do-it-all wing who can provide both scoring and leadership. One of the best along the boards and in the corners, Iginla is extremely strong and will take the pounding in front of the net. A power forward who doesn’t play a traditional big man’s game, since he usually carries the puck himself rather than wait for it in scoring position. Iginla was a member of Canada’s 2002 Olympic gold medal winning team, and the 2004 World Cup winner. Iginla has won 1 Pearson Trophy, 1 Art Ross Trophy, 2 Rocket Richard Trophies, and is a 2 time all-star.

The New Jersey Devils are pleased to select a 9 time all-star defenseman in the USSR

Alexei Kasatonov (http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1983/83225.html)

"Always playing together with his defensive partner Slava Fetisov, they were considered to be the best defensive pair outside the NHL. Some experts said that he was even better than Fetisov. Kasatonov was the favourite player of former Soviet coach Viktor Tikhonov." - russianrocket (http://www.russianrocket.de/Teammates/Kasatonov/hauptteil_kasatonov.html)

"An excellent skater, Kasatonov is grace in Motion, moving as quickly backward as forward. Though not afraid to hit, he is not primarily a physical defenseman but will lean into his check and pin forwards to the boards. He is equally adept at stripping the puck from skaters and turning the play around swiftly and effectively. He can rush the puck or pass with equal skill and execution. There are few more well-rounded defenders in the NHL." - 1993-94 Hockey Almanac

"Defenseman Alexei Kasatonov was one of the top blue liners in Russia throughout the 1980's. In 1981, when the Russians won the Canada Cup, Kasatonov was named to the tournament All-Star Team. That year he also was named a Russian All-Star a feat he would repeat in each of the next seven seasons. In that stretch he also participated in three Olympic tournaments and won two gold's and a silver, won five World Championships and 11 National Titles in the Soviet Union. Throughout this time he was paired with Russian legend Slava Fetisov and many hockey observers considered them to be the best defensive pair outside of the NHL." - HHoF Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=10760)

The New Jersey Devils are pleased to select an all-time great who had the misfortune to have his peak years at the same time as Doug Harvey and Red Kelly. This HHoFer still managed to make 3 first and 4 second all-star teams.

Bill Gadsby (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/LegendsMember.jsp?mem=p197002&type=Player&page=bio&list=)

A power-play specialist who registered at least 20 points in 12 seasons, Gadsby was an outstanding puckhandler and quite comfortable joining the rush. He finished 10th in NHL scoring with 51 points for the Rangers in 1955-56 and equaled that total in 1957-58, when his 46 assists established an NHL record for rearguards which stood until Boston’s Bobby Orr collected 87 helpers in 1969-70.

As a Red Wing, Gadsby reached several more milestones. On November 4, 1962, he became the first NHL defenseman to record 500 career points. February 5, 1966, Gadsby became the first player in NHL history to play 300 games for three different teams. That same season, he and teammate Gordie Howe joined former Boston star Dit Clapper as the NHL’s only 20-year men. - Wings of Legend (http://www.detroitredwings.com/history/wol/wol-billgadsby.jsp)

With a few weeks left in the 1954-55 season, however, Horton broke his leg and jaw in a thunderous collision with the New York Rangers' Bill Gadsby. Gadsby later said it was the hardest hit he ever delivered. Horton, in traction and fed intravenously for days afterwards in the hospital, certainly agreed. -

Not only did Gadsby compete, he excelled. Amazingly, he would retire as the sports all time leading defensemen with the most points, penalty minutes, and games! He was rugged, too. Many times he hit the ice blocking as many shots as the goaltender and adding more stitches and injuries to his tally. In one game he hit Tim Horton so hard that, even today, he shudders to think he came close to killing him. - [URL=http://www.bojibooks.com/gadsby_jacket.asp]The Grateful Gadsby (]Tim Horton's HHoF Bio[/URL)

"Bill Gadsby never received the credit he deserved. He was one of the great defensive hockey players in the history of the league. One of the best players I ever played against." - Milt Schmidt

"Bill was a great team player. He played the way you want defensemen to play. He moved the puck, and people in front of the net. He got hit and blocked more shots than most goaltenders." - Emile Francis

Damn! played against him here 2 years ago, wanted to take him for my team.

Instead Vancouver bolsters its defence with the selection of 8 time Russian all-star, Valeri Vasiliev

The next three teams to draft, in order, are:

118 AG - Saskatoon Blues -
119 Hedberg - Phoenix Coyotes -
120 VanIslander - Cambridge Tabs

(to clarify... I got a puzzling PM listing my team and the two that comes after it, when in fact AG and Hedberg are up next. What's the point of listing the two teams after mine but not the two before? :dunno: )
