Don't miss it (if you don't already have the DVD) tonight on PBS for our North american friends and on BBC 2 for the Europeans.

Marty Scorsese's 4 hour documentary is supposed to be well worth watching, tons of unseen footage and historical moments (the Judas heckle) for the first time seen on film.

So whatever you do don't miss this if you're interested in Dylan - Music - the 60's - Scorsese

Got the DVD Wednesday :)

It's not available yet here :(

And I'm running out of money, concert in november, just bought Bootleg Series 7 and then those DVD's... costly months for Bob fans...

Did you get your hands on the Carnegie hall bonus disc by any chance? I've been all over Europe trying to find it but it's simply not available here :(

By the way Tim, what's your opinion on the newly originated "JUDAS" controversy?

Some say he doesn't say "play ****ing loud" afterwards but rather "you're a ****ing liar" and many also say it's not Dylan but probably rather Danko shouting it (as the words don't fit with Dylan's mouth movements during the incident, as well as the fact that Dylan is apparently speaking to the Band, not shouting)

I can't freeze frame it before I've got the DVD but you should habe a look and judge for yourself :)

I am really digging what I'm seeing so far. I'm taping it for a future viewing wiht some friends who have to work tonight, but I've checked some of it out off and on. I can't believe the quality of film they have of some of the performances. high quality video of a great era of Dylan. :yo:

It's definitely Dylan saying "you're a ****ing liar". Well, not definitely, because it's my opinion, but it's his voice for sure. The video's off a bit, but no doubt that's him.

I've been looking forward to seeing this for a long time, and the wait has been well worth it -- the documentary has been great so far.

Dylan is hilarious, there are tons of little interspersed moments where his humor shines through. The "It's not the getting shot part that bothers me, but the being told about it" part and the whole "Just stop booing me, God" series of comments are hilarious... he must be an absolute riot to be around.

Really a great watch so far, and I'm sure it'll only get better tomorrow. Scorsese is the man.

He posts sometimes here (http://mudcat.org/usersearch.cfm?who=GUEST%2CBob%20Dylan).

And yes, I believe it is him. There are a few comments on the documentary there.

I thought it would be a great way to learn more about a seminal artist that I had not tried yet. Great documentary, and I definitely agree that Dylan seems to be an amazing persona. Personally, the second part was much, much better, but thats because I was somewhat aversive to much of the music in the first.

A lot of people say that Dylan can't sing, but I'll take Bob's vocal expression over Mariah Carey's caterwauling any day.

Something is happening here but you don't know what it is ...

More on Bob's sense of humor

I Shall Be Free #10

I'm just average, common too
I'm just like him, the same as you
I'm everybody's brother and son
I ain't different from anyone
It ain't no use a-talking to me
It's just the same as talking to you.

I was shadow-boxing earlier in the day
I figured I was ready for Cassius Clay
I said "Fee, fie, fo, fum, Cassius Clay, here I come
26, 27, 28, 29, I'm gonna make your face look just like mine
Five, four, three, two, one, Cassius Clay you'd better run
99, 100, 101, 102, your ma won't even recognize you
14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, gonna knock him clean right out of his spleen."

Well, I don't know, but I've been told
The streets in heaven are lined with gold
I ask you how things could get much worse
If the Russians happen to get up there first.
Wowee! Pretty scary!

Now, I'm liberal, but to a degree
I want ev'rybody to be free
But if you think that I'll let Barry Goldwater
Move in next door and marry my daughter
You must think I'm crazy!
I wouldn't let him do it for all the farms in Cuba.

Well, I set my monkey on the log
And ordered him to do the Dog
He wagged his tail and shook his head
And he went and did the Cat instead
He's a weird monkey, very funky.

I sat with my high-heeled sneakers on
Waiting to play tennis in the noonday sun
I had my white shorts rolled up past my waist
And my wig-hat was falling in my face
But they wouldn't let me on the tennis court.

I gotta woman, she's so mean
She sticks my boots in the washing machine
Sticks me with buckshot when I'm nude
Puts bubblegum in my food
She's funny, wants my money, calls me "honey."

Now I gotta friend who spends his life
Stabbing my picture with a bowie-knife
Dreams of strangling me with a scarf
When my name comes up he pretends to barf.
I've got a million friends!

Now they asked me to read a poem
At the sorority sister's home
I got knocked down and my head was swimmin'
I wound up with the Dean of Women
Yippee! I'm a poet, and I know it.
Hope I don't blow it.

I'm gonna grow my hair down to my feet so strange
So I look like a walking mountain range
And I'm gonna ride into Omaha on a horse
Out to the country club and the golf course.
Carry the New York Times, shoot a few holes, blow their minds.

Now you're probably wondering by now
Just what this song is all about
What's probably got you baffled more
Is what this thing here is for.
It's nothing
It's something I learned over in England.

He's amazing isn't he :D

The thing is that the journalists were simply completely cluesless those days it seems. I can't imagine any kind of 'star' singer being interviewed nowadays by people who admit to not having heard him sing... And the nerve some journalists display! Incredible...

Another good one (one of my favorites - not in the movie though)
Journalist: "What's your real message,"
Bob Dylan: "Keep a good head and always carry a light bulb"

If you want to know more about Mr. D you can go a long way by buying one or two records (Highway 61 Revisited or Blonde on Blonde), the rest will follow automatically :D

I'd probably say The Times They Are A-Changin(his beginning) and Blood on the Tracks(his peak)

I'd definitely recommend Blood on the Tracks way before Blonde on Blonde. B on B would be pretty low in terms of best Dylan albums in my book.

BotT has drifted to #3 in my books at this moment.

I have HW61R at #1 right now, played it a lot during the summer, and BoB is my current #2.
I think I'd have JWH at #4, Biabh at #5 right now.

By the way NDH part 2 > NDH part 1, amazing footage and less Pete Seeger is always a good thing in my book :D

Good to see JWH rising. :)

I've never been a real big fan of BoB or Bringn'. I generally prefer the more acoustic side of Dylan.

I was one of the best documentaries I have seen. I thought it was pretty funny when a journalist kept pressing Bob about the Highway 61 Revisted cover art. He kept asking if the Triumph Motorcycle shirt meant that he was trying to change his image. And Bob says "Everyone likes motorcycles."

The accoustic bob doesn't get much better then side two of BIABH though: Tambourine Man, Gates of Eden, It's allright Ma and Baby Blue, tough to beat that! :teach:

I would recommend Highway 61 for starters, I started with the same one (only three years ago actually  ) and I've never looked back since.

It has Like a Rolling Stone which is always good for starters (a song you actually know) and is filled with Blues-Garage rock with incredible surreal stream of consciousness lyrics. Also it is one of the few albums with no obvious weak or 'filler' song on them.
And as an added bonus you'll have Desolation Row as closer to the album, I think that's his second greatest song ever (#1 is Visions of Johanna).

Yeah there's some great songs on there, but too much electric in that album too though. Maggie's Farm, Subterranean Homesick, Outlaw Blues, On The Road Again...

It was his first electric album, and IMO he overdid.

I would put the Times against either of those albums song for song.

Okay split the difference and go with Highway 61 and Blood on the Tracks Golf.

I started out with Desire and Before the Flood (which is Dylan and The Band) and then just kept going. Both are terriffic, but probably not the best first choices. I'd echo Highway 61

If you're buying and you don't want to spend too much make sure you don't get the SACD version but rather the regular version. One of the big plusses of Dylan compared to say, the Beatles is that his older CD's are very cheap!
