Quotable:

"I love the guy; I think he should have been in L.A. 10 years ago. He's entertainment. If you think of the Lakers when they had Magic (Johnson), it was pure entertainment. That's what JR brings to our team. On top of being a hard player, he does entertaining things." - Luc Robitaille

"My kids look at me sometimes and they bow their heads, like, 'Oh my God, Dad.' I'll dance in the car, sing in the car. I'll be around my kids' friends and do something wild and crazy and my (11-year-old) daughter goes, 'Dad, stop it, you're embarrassing me.' I say, 'What do you have to be embarrassed about?' " - Jeremy Roenick

"If there's a concern I have, it's making sure we maintain the same work ethic and level of determination that we've always had. We've got some players with more skill, but hard work beats skill when skill doesn't work. We've got to make sure our skill is working." - Andy Murray

Injury Update:

Kings captain, Mattias Norstrom, who is eligible to come off the injured list before tonight's game, was not expected to fly with the Kings to Dallas Tuesday while recovering from the flu. Depending on how he's feeling, Norstrom could join the team in time to play tonight. LA Daily News (http://www2.dailynews.com/sports/ci_3087034)
Kings forward, Valeri Bure (back strain, retroactive to September 29) and defenseman, Richard Petiot (rib contusion, retroactive to September 27) will also start the season on the Injured Reserve.
Defenseman Tim Gleason rejoined the team Monday for a full practice after sitting out a few days because of a sore right knee. OC Register (http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/sports/pros/article_700323.php)

That was one long summer. I'm having difficulty concentrating on work right now. It is almost like being a kid again and waiting to open presents on Christmas morning.

If my Center Ice package isn't working I feel sorry for the poor customer service rep that gets my call. "Make it work! It has been too long!"

I'm pretty much a lurker and this board has helped me get through this tough time, so I thank you guys for feeding my hunger for hockey. Now it is time for the real thing. Go Kings!

Three FYIs:

1. There's a pre-game special on at 5:00pm called "Hockey Night in L.A.". It appears to be on before both the Kings and Ducks games, so I'm guessing the half-hour special wil cover both teams.

2. The Rangers/Flyers game is on OLN at 4:00pm and again at 8:00pm.

3. OLN has a 1-hour postgame show on at 7:00pm, in-between the Rangers/Flyers airings. Those of us watching the Kings-Stars will miss it, but there may be time to flip over during commercial breaks or an intermission.

This was not surprising at all. When you take penalty after penalty and you generate zero offense, you'll never hold a lead. Even with all of the penalties, if the Kings had just pressured the Stars, they would've drawn penalties and erased the Stars momentum. When your opening night lineup on defense includes Joe Corvo and Mike Weaver, you should be worried.

Offense was there in the first and understandably disappeared in the second due to the amount of fouls, err, penalties called. I'm sorry, I had the officiating of the NHL mixed up with the NBA's for a second there.

Notice how most of the Stars goals originated from the blueline? Take a look at how the Kings setup on the powerplay and what they are able (or unable) to do from the point and how they constantly cycle the puck on the outside perimiter.

I wouldn't fault Garon on most of those goals, they were perfect shots from great scoring opportunities (aside from the last flukey goal that bounced off of Belanger's skate). The Kings allowed the Stars to get back due to their frequent visits to the box.

Once again our defense was ATROCIOUS, and people want to blame the goalie.I'm not sure I would say the defense was that bad. Even a decent defense wouldn't be able to stand up to 40 minutes of sustained pressure. Putting themselves on the penalty kill repeatingly and the offense not doing their job of generating offensive pressure is not supposed to happen and would sink just about any defense. Tonight was a total team meltdown, not a defense meltdown.

Two comments:

1. Without Norstrom, the Kings have the worst defense in the league. If Matty, Miller & Visnovsky miss 60 or more games combined, this team will not make the playoffs.

2. A Kessel-Kopitar-Boyle 1-2-3 punch down the middle would look nice. Real nice.

Weaver made some great plays in the first, but lets not kid ourselves, he is nothing more than a depth defenseman.

The Kings staff is smart and they know that offense starts from your blueline... you need defensemen who can skate the puck out of the zone... who can control the powerplay from the point (see Zubov tonight). It frustrates me that they failed to address a big need. They have been missing that big pressence on the point since dealing Schneider (and I'm not saying they made a bad move, but they still have not addressed that hole, and Corvo is not an acceptable replacement).

Is it me or do the Kings need a little more speed? Seemed to get caught flat footed a few times which led to some of these hooking penalties. Just wondering how a stick in the midsection that doesnt slow a guy down is a penalty but frolov looks to be getting pulled down coming from behind the net at the end of the game and no call? Being that the majority of this team was built around the "old" NHL hopefully the transition to the "new" NHL doesnt take very long.

After the first period, the Kings did stop skating. The Kings looked to be the faster team in the first and after the Kings stopped skating, the parade to the penalty box began and the Stars took over the game.

It also seemed like both goalies were used to having bigger shirts on the help stop the puck. Both seemed to "flinch" at the pucks and were surprised to see them in the back of the net. Expecially the first goal against Turco.

It's nice to see that some people have a grip on reality. There are about twenty threads at LetsGoKings about how the season is already over and the Kings are the worst team ever. Yeah, it was a bad game, but it was only the first one. Yeah, the Kings went from being on top of the world to the depths of hell, but that happens sometimes. This could end up being a good lesson because now they should know that sitting back in the "new" NHL could end up being costly. Now, if they don't learn from this, then we start questioning the aptitude of the players and the coaches, but not yet. Let's see if the defense can start learning from their mistakes, and if the team as a whole can get away from the obstruction penalties. Hell yeah I'm upset, but last I checked, the Kings play the Coyotes at 7:30 tomorrow night. Hey, they get another chance. Hockey's back. I love it. And by the way, the sky is still up there.

Osprey, one reason I quoted your post is because I respect you and your attitude toward all this. The Kings lost, and I'm sure you're just as pissed off about it as I am, but I really respect your mature and informed viewpoints. It's refreshing to see that. In general, this message board is much more mature and civil than the other one. I really do appreciate reading about the mistakes the Kings made, and how they can fix them, instead of "It's over!!! I disagree whole heartedly. I thought the game was very fairly called (call me a homer all you want).

When the Kings were driving the net in the first, they drew calls. They stopped doing that, stopped inducing interference, hooking and holding calls. It's pretty simple.

And I thought a bunch more calls could have gone against the Kings. The refs have made no secret of the fact they are cracking down this year. If the Kings aren't going to adjust, which they certainly didn't in this game, they're going to be on a constant parade to the box (Belanger especially - he was brutal out there as far as interference).

And they didn't take advantage of the rules because they stopped driving the net after the first. The Stars have a smallish defense, so they can be overpowered and forced into bad position/committing penalties. The Kings jumped on it early but didn't continue their pressure.

I can't help but laugh a little at tonight's meltdown. Boy, that was brutal, but not every game will be like that and I won't let it spoil my excitement that hockey is back. My enjoyment of hockey isn't dependent on the success of any one team. BTW, same thing to you regarding your posts.

I agree with the Stars fan. Most of the Kings penalties seemed to be good calls to me. Now, that doesn't mean that the refs weren't ignoring Stars penalties, since I wasn't looking for them and I don't know. 4 minutes on the powerplay for the Kings and 16 minutes for the Stars seems way out of whack, but the Kings deserved their penalties, IMO.

How disappointing. Blame it on whatever/whoever you want, but the fact is we crapped the bed hardcore tonight. JR with two goals in the first 5 minutes, and we didn't capitalize on that? Where was the rejuvenated offence tonight?

I know it is early, but if we are going to do anything we surely need a top 4 dman. The fact is that it would be like winning the lottery to see Norstrom, Miller, and Vis each play a full year (or even 3/4 for that matter). UNbelievable. I am utterly disappointed in this team right now.

The Kings were 29-40 on the draw against the Stars. Another statistic to add... the Kings were out-hit by a small margin (29-25). Mike Modano had 8 shots on goal! The Stars had the man advantage for 16:29. The Kings had the man-advantage for only 4:01. Dallas was only 2 for 12 on the PP. The Kings were 1 for 4.

Dustin Brown was called for three consecutive minor penalties in the third period; slashing at 8:07, interference at 15:38 (a terrible call by the official) and he was given a penalty for charging at the end of the game. Dustin led the Kings with 4 shots on goal. The Kings committed four hooking, three holding and three interference penalties.

Some more additional notes to add...
The pairing of Gleason-Miller was on the ice for 3 of the Stars goals. The pairing of Visnovsky-Corvo was on the ice for 2 Stars goals.

Four of the five Stars goals originated from the point. On the Stars' second goal, Roenick, Cammalleri and Avery were the forwards, and it appears as though Cammalleri missed to pick up his man (Zubov).

Avery also took himself out of the play as skated to a position where there was no Stars skater. This enabled the Stars to attack with their three forwards at the hash-mark/left circle area in the Kings zone. It also gave Zubov time and room to walk in untouched and wrist a shot past Garon from a prime scoring area.

On the third Stars goal, two Star players were in front of the net, and the Kings defensemen tried to defend them by standing in front of the Stars players (in an attempt to block a shot or pass). Zubov once again had a lot of time to weigh his options. He faked a shot that made Sean Avery hit the ice to block it, taking Sean out of the play. Zubov was then able to pull the puck to an open area where he had two options, take a shot or setup Modano for a one-timer. He elected to shoot and successfully score on the powerplay.

The game-tying goal resulted from an aggressive forecheck by Brendan Morrow, as he beat Visnovsky to the puck in the corner, feeding the puck to an uncontested Arnott who quickly dished the puck off to the point where Robidas was able to slap a puck that was deflected into the net by Bill Guerin. The Kings were outnumbered in front as Guerin and Morrow were positioned in front with Visnovsky as the lone defenseman between them.

Corvo made a mistake when he went behind the net to cut off the pass from Morrow to Arnott. Corvo then followed the puck and stuck with Arnott, who had already passed the puck off, leaving Visnovsky behind to defend against two Star forwards.

The fifth, game-winning goal, resulted from a faceoff win for the Stars deep in the Kings zone. The officials failed the pick up on an interference call on this goal, as a Kings winger attempted to check Boucher after the faceoff and was interfered with by a Stars skater. The slight second of interference allowed Boucher to walk in and throw the puck in front of the net that ended up deflecting off of Eric Belanger's skate and into the net. It was a fluky goal, but it resulted from a faceoff win and a non-call.

The Stars were able to come back because of the Kings' inability to get to loose pucks, their undisciplined play, their lack of physical play (as Stars forwards were able to barrel themselves into the corners and won the battles along the boards). The poor faceoff percentage also hurt as well as their failure to maintain a consistent forecheck after the first period.

Osprey

Belanger trailed all Kings in the faceoff circle, winning only 5 out of 19 faceoffs for a 26% faceoff percentage. FW is right that he's just about useless if he doesn't win faceoffs, but I imagine and hope that it's just an off-night.

The Miller-Gleason pairing was on the ice for 3 goals because that was the team's best defensive pair and they were out there killing penalties. 2 were PP goals and the 3rd might've been just after a kill. I wouldn't blame that pairing at all. If anything, they were gassed from all of the kills. Miller played really hard, I noticed.

It's hockey, it happens. The greatest team to ever hit the ice, led by Peter Forsberg, lost a 2 goal lead, at home, to the Rangers, who scored 4 unanswered goals.

At least the Kings have a game the very next night, and it's the home opener. We'll see how they respond.

A few thoughts,
Cammy playing only 9:19 the 2nd lowest pt next to Parros :dunno: . Now I know they were on pk most of the night, but still 9:19...***.

I hate ebel, he does not deserve capital letters until he soundly removes his head and unf...s himself immediately. 26%, 26%. No one took more faceoffs for the Kings, and he went 26%. So he had an off year in 2003-04, are you sure it was just an off year. Small cap for ebel.

I don't like 3 or 4 goal leads in the 1st period for the Kings, I like them with 5 min to go in the 3rd. For some reason they *always* let up and stop going forward and playing the same game that got them the 3-4 goal lead. Not sure who to fault.

And last, 1260am sucks bad. Great, I'm in OC, but still. All I heard was a Spanish station with a hint of Nick Nickson, but not enough to figure out what the hecks going on.

That being said, lets go out tonight and win.

tough loss guys...I am a Ducks fan, and an opening night win was awesome...everything seemed to go the way the ducks could have wanted...the goalie, giguere, looks like he will have an awesome year...Lupul had two goals, the fan-favorite Selanne picked up a goal, the best defenseman in the league...Scott Niedermeyer...picked up a goal...and his brother...Rob Niedermeyerer picked up a goal

It seems like the Kings started the same way, but just took too many penalties...Admittedly, it is awesome to look at www.nhl.com and see the Ducks first in the division...with the rankings of Detroit and Vancouver...and the only California team thus far with a win...but Kings fans...I am hoping that both the Kings and Ducks make the playoffs...

From what I saw last night, the Kings also have a great team...but like JR said, they just need to stop taking too many penalties...if the Kings win tonights game, then you guys should know the Kings will be fine...just a weird game to start the season...

And besides...champions overcome adversity...and so if the Kings cannot overcome last night's game, do they deserve to be Champs? kings? Tonight will be a real test for their character...

...personally, I think the Kings and Ducks matchups this year will be awesome...both have up-tempo, exciting teams...

Overall, both teams look pretty good...but I hope the Ducks win the Stanley at the end...good luck Kings fans...the season has begun!!!

I think the biggest thing the Kings failed to pick up last night was how to play physically without drawing penalties. There was like... no hitting for the first 10 minutes. But the Stars got desperate and started bodying the puck carrier legally as they player came at them while the Kings would wait until they were trailing the play to try and play the body, which resulted in the slashing, the hooks and the interference.

In part, this resulted from the Stars' speed up front. But the Kings failed to keep the play in front just in general of them, which I think was the biggest reason for their collapse.

Last nights game was bogged down by too many penalties that you didn't even see happen. Countless times while watching last night the whistle would blow out of nowhere. It's kind of ridiculous in my opinion but oh well. Here's to the new NHL. And nice phantom interference call on Dustin Brown going hard to the net. There were a few noncalls on Frolov at the end too. They were all over him.

Ok i'm done. Moving on.

... and a quiet 9:19 it was. Cammy didn't look effective out there at all. No hitting, no chasing down loose pucks - I never heard his name on the broadcast at all. If he is going to be successful, he has to be a buzzsaw out there, active on every shift.

Yeah, EBel struggled last night. You have to wonder if the new obstruction rules will affect his ability to tie up opposing centers in the circle.

It also seems that the refs tend to give the team that is down a bit more of a break. It's just human nature (especially with NHL refs) to try to make the game a little more even, but while the Kings may have deserved their penalties, it is hard to imagine that the Stars were playing that much cleaner.

I agree that he needs to be very active to be successful. You've got to admit that the 2-moves going down the left side in the Dallas end were sweet. He toasted both of those guys...

Brown looked very active out there and created a few chances for himself. One turned into a goal.

Brown's game is still young. At this point he's a defensive liability to the Kings. He plays VERY aggressive in the offensive zone and all but disappears on the defensive side of the puck...

IMHO, he deserved to sit after taking that penalty IMMEDIATELY after the Stars scored their 3rd goal and AM called a timeout. I was yelling for him to sit the rest of the game after that crap.

Can we trade Eric Belanger now? He's horrible defensively, and he didn't win any face offs, supposedly his strongpoint. We could also waive him...who cares about him...a french canadian who wears a visor...

Agreed. Also, you'll find Brown taking a lot of retaliatory penalties like the slash last night. :shakehead

I am happy hockey is back but it is the same ol' Kings franchise. Every time I fall for the TL and DT crap of "we are going to improve our team this year!" I think we have waited long enough!!! :teach:

The penalty Brown took last night at the end of the game was the best penalty any of the Kings took all night... he got it going directly to the net, which is his game and it will serve him very well over the next 10 or 15 seasons, which if healthy, he'll undoubtedly be playing in this league.

Find me a 21-year old Forward who's a defensive stalwart with as much power forward scoring capabilities as this guy.

Id just like to point out who the first guy was that gave Avery a High 5 on the bench after the goal review...........Eric Belanger.

Remember how Belanger said if Avery was getting beat on, he wouldn't be the first one in to help him out. Well, I was watching the highlights today, and guess who was one of the first ones in there when Avery was getting smacked around after his goal? Yep, E. Belanger.

Believe me, I know that he is one tough kid. I did have the pleasure of watching him all last season here in Manchester. He will take some good penalties but my point is he will also take some bad ones which the slash was. Also, as we saw last night on the interference call, he'll take some he doesn't even deserve. He does get in front of the net and takes a beating but keeps going back. Like I said, he's tough. I just don't know if I'd call him a defensive stalwart yet.

I wasn't blaming them. I was stating the facts and observations from the game. I'm not blaming this loss an any individual player, as this was a loss caused from the teams play and lack of performance after the first period.

Agreed, Absolutely, wasn't even a penalty from where I was sitting. (HDTV with replay)...BUT, the slash was an immature retaliation to getting hit. He wants to play tough and I'm all for it and LOVE that part of his game. Playing tough is going to get him knocked down and IF he continues to slash (spearing behind the play was more his MO in Manchester last season) he's going to get caught and the Kings will be left shorthanded as a result. If Brown continues with cheap crap like that, someone is going to beat his arse...
