So I just read on TSN that the Oilers claimed Steve Valiquette off of waivers. I guess he didn't impress in practice!!!
so much for our goaltending depthpantherhockey 10-08-2003, 08:28 AM So I just read on TSN that the Oilers claimed Steve Valiquette off of waivers. I guess he didn't impress in practice!!! Rattrick 10-08-2003, 08:44 AM So I just read on TSN that the Oilers claimed Steve Valiquette off of waivers. I guess he didn't impress in practice!!! HA! That's funny  Acadmus 10-08-2003, 09:08 AM HA! That's funny  Actually, it was expected. The Panthers didn't want him backing up Luongo in the NHL, so they acquired Shields. In order to send Valiquette to the minors, he had to clear waivers. He's a good enough prospect that the Oilers wanted him back, so the odds of him clearing waivers were not good, but the move was an unfortunate necessity. The only way to have good goaltending depth, unfortunately, is to have top goalie prospects under age 23 in the minors. Anyone older has to pass the waiver draft, and other teams might like them. The Panthers were just stuck. The only real criticism you can have of Dudley is that he didn't try hard enough to trade Hurme before the Waiver Draft so he could protect Mason, but maybe it wasn't really possible. We still have a top flight started with a guy who's a decent backup. justapantherfan 10-08-2003, 09:43 AM I really think we should have protected Mason and left Hurme out. I am surprised that they didn't try and get Mason back with a trade or future pick. I was waiting for this one and knew it would come since i dont think Dudley is that dumb that he sends Sheilds to the AHL which i am fairly certain he could do for free but i am not 100% on the rules around a traded player that cleared the Waiverdraft if he is eligeble to slide down for free like if on his original team. But it is nice to see the Waiverdraft rules being in place and that they work. So Nothing >>>>>>>>>>> Mason, Hurme or Hurme,Mason >>>>>>>>>>> Nothing make your pick i know what Dudley took and i know what i take Rattrick 10-08-2003, 12:19 PM I was waiting for this one and knew it would come since i dont think Dudley is that dumb that he sends Sheilds to the AHL which i am fairly certain he could do for free but i am not 100% on the rules around a traded player that cleared the Waiverdraft if he is eligeble to slide down for free like if on his original team. Dudley screwed up and was man enough to admit he did. He didn't gild the lily. I wish panthers fans would acknowledge this fact and move forward rather than defend the indefenseable. Swedish Bolt Fan I know how much you're enjoying this but it's over now. You can be assured it won't be forgotten, with or without your daily reminders. ;) Darth Milbury 10-08-2003, 12:50 PM The perspective on an outsider: Yeah, Dudley made a mistake, but ultimately, it is no big deal. Cats have themselves an excellent number one, an a reasonably strong backup. Don't forget, Shields has been a number one at various points in his career, and he is capable of playing at an extremely high level for periods of time. At the very least, he is a pretty solid number 2 guy. Is he a downgrade from Hurme? Maybe, maybe not. But, either way, in the long run, the Cats are not a whole lot weaker than they were before this debacle started. Time to get on with things, and enjoy watching an extremely promising young team come together! Swedish Bolt Fan 10-08-2003, 12:57 PM Horton is a completely separate issue and shouldn't be a factor in this matter. Dudley screwed up and was man enough to admit he did. He didn't gild the lily. Or like they say if it looks like ..... smells like ...... and tastes like ..... you can be fairly certain it is ...... even when someone says it is the new icecream from Edy's Coolburn 10-08-2003, 02:49 PM I think the only screw up was not protecting Mason in the first place. He pretty much outplayed Hurme from most accounts during the preseason and deserved his shot at backing up Luongo. Crossbar 10-08-2003, 03:06 PM Where are the quotes to Dudley admitting he screwed up? Rich: Agreed, it was just unexpected that Mason would be picked up plain and simple, perhaps Dudley was too eager to get rid of Hurme's salary. As for Shields, all I have to say is when was the last time a goalie performed well in Boston? Potvin? No. Hackett? No. Shields? No. Grahame? No. Raycroft? No. Dafoe? Early on in his career but then later....No. See the trend? A change is just what Shields needs. Crossbar 10-08-2003, 03:15 PM BTW there was a vote of who the 2 likely players to be traded from each conference will be and it was Comrie from the West and Hurme from the East, Hurme is expected not to fetch much of anything (according to Spector) so perhaps Atlanta forking over a 4th rounder was a little unnessesary spur of the moment thing themselves but I guess we'll see what happens very soon. Rattrick 10-08-2003, 03:24 PM Horton is a completely separate issue and shouldn't be a factor in this matter. Dudley screwed up and was man enough to admit he did. He didn't gild the lily. Heimy 10-08-2003, 04:12 PM [QUOTE=Crossbar]Where are the quotes to Dudley admitting he screwed up? They were in the 3 papers Crossbar. Here's a few... "My biggest mistake was worrying about the fact that a person's value would go down if we left him exposed," Dudley said. "That cost us Chris Mason and we didn't anticipate that." "It was an eventful day," General Manager Rick Dudley said. "To be honest, we weren't real happy with the way it worked out." "Asked where the team goes from here, Dudley said: "We're going to see what we have." Crossbar 10-08-2003, 04:20 PM Ah well losing Mason I understand but I meant quotes from Dudley about making a mistake with Hurme since this is the main reason why we are getting all these trolls coming here poking fun at Dudley. Heimy 10-08-2003, 04:49 PM Yeah who needs Jani Hurme or at least a 4th rd pick anyway? Oy vey  btw, Pete and SBF are regulars on hfboards. Just cause they display poor judgement in which hockey club they support doesn't make then trolls, tasteless maybe, but not trolls. :p Rattrick 10-08-2003, 04:56 PM Yeah who needs Jani Hurme or at least a 4th rd pick anyway?
