Gameday: Philadelphia VS Buffalo

This game should not be taken lightly. Lindy Ruff always manages to coach very well against us and Buffalo is one team in the league that has had a lot of success against us. They always manage to get great goaltending against the Flyers and control most of the play. It should be an interesting test for us as a much improved and under-rated team in Buffalo will be ready for us tomorrow night.

Prediction:

Philly wins 2-1

Goals by Amonte and Pitkanen

Hard to believe hockey season is here already. I often hear the media saying things like "I can't believe the NHL season is here, it seems like it just ended," or something like that, but to me it's been a long off-season without hockey.

Anyway, I think it will be fun for the Flyers to open up against Buffalo as their a pretty big rival.

I'm going to call a blow out for the Flyers....something like 5-2 or 6-1. I think the Flyers are defenitly the better team and they are going to be jacked.

hey guys i'm back after a three month absence, if you even noticed i was gone.

no, it really doesnt seem like hockey season yet, usually i'm counting down the days until it starts but not this year.

I agree that Buffalo's goalies usually play well against us--also interested to see how the power play will work for us, and can't wait to see Joni play.

I think the boys will win, but it won't be a blow out. I don't think many of our games will be blow outs.
2-1, 3-2, a close score. We might dominate in time of posession, but Buffalo will hang around, just to make things nervous!

Man if this is a blowout (likely won't be) I'd be really surprised. I miss what scoring goals feels like. It's not often we see the Flyers score 4,5,6 goals anymore. I remember last season we ripped out of the gates with a lot of goals and it seemed to have quited down once Johnny got injured. 2 Guys I hope will have huge seasons are Amonte and Kapanen.
They are goal scorers and have to regain their touch for us to be considered one of the elite teams in the league. Imagine getting 30 goals from Amonte, Roenick, Kapanen, Gagné, Leclair, Recchi, Primeau (doubtful in new role), Williams??? It's very possible for the majority of these guys. I think the trip to West point helped them out. We'll wait and see......

I'm not sure about this one, but someone told me the Flyers were one of four teams to not score 7 goals in a game last year. 7 is a lot, but with all the fire power we supposedly had, you'd think we'd have to beat someone 8-1 or something.

I'm not big on predicting games early in the season, but I think the Flyers will win. Buffalo's defense is still a bit weak, they're not too solid, they lost who might have been their #3 d-man in Rhett Warrener. The big question is wheather or not the Flyers can exploit the inexperience of the Sabres team. 4-2 win.

And get it together on the power play. If we had that going last season, we would have won the division.

Im going for a 3-1 Sabres win, the Sabres have been the Flyers bogey team and I think the Flyers will get bad goaltending to lose it early.

Flyers scored six 7 times if you count the playoffs.

I just want the 2 points. I really could care less who scored 6, 7 or 8 goals, just WIN!

Bottom line, is we need to win our division, to get the #2 seed. So for those who say the reg. season means nothing, it does! The Debs had the easy road to the finals, because they took care of business during the reg. season.

what made the difference was the 3 losses to Jersey in the regular season.

That's + 6 points for them. Had we won one of those 3 we would have been ranked 2nd. We need to beat them in the season series, that will prove to be huge.

Hardly. One of the few things I don't miss about being in college now is hearing Rick Jeanerette's voice.

If Peters wants to rumble, Brashear will be game, if Fedoruk or Vandermeer doesn't get him first. FYI: Brashear hasn't lost a fight as a Flyer. He's had draws, but he hasn't lost, certainly not as decidedly as you think he will. Check the tapes.

Are you on *****in crack!? Jeanerette is unentertaining and wretched?! You have either never heard Sabres play-by-play before or are one of the very very few people who don't like Jeanerette. He is known around the NHL as one of the most, if not the most, exciting announcers around. He is the most passionate play-by-play man I've ever heard, constantly screaming when we score and his calls during fights are amazing.

Three key errors in your comments:
1. Brashear wasn't a Flyer at the time.
2. Grosek and Ray aren't Sabres anymore.
3. Brashear was on Vancouver in 97-98, they never met in the playoffs.

Please, Hackett sucks and eveyone in Philly knows it too but they won't admit it. I would much rather have on of the most highly-touted prospects in the NHL playing in my net.

And we have a weaker offense now? Since when did adding Chris Drury make someone's offense worse? Obviously you follow the Sabres close enough to make statements about us which are valid.

If Peters and Brashear go, it'll be a good fight. If Peters fights anyone else on the Flyers, mark my word, they'll get thier ass kicked into the street. Peters is huge, 247 pounds, and beat the living **** out of Vandanbusshe and many others in the preseason.

It probably won't though. Fedoruk is the main fighter now, when he plays [which he will tonight]. When he's in the lineup, him and Brashear have Domi/Belak-like thing going, where Todd takes most of the fights but Brashear handles the big names. It's great when they play a team like say the Leafs or Rangers, because after the second tier guys fight--especially if they fight early--you're just waiting for the heavyweights to rumble, you can almost smell it.

I'm not debating that. I'm just saying I won't miss hearing him. For me, Jeanerette is similar to Emrich. Both are very good, both are very knowledgable, but they both go a little overboard. I can only take so much at a time.

Don't be a sore loser. The game was 0-0. Drawing a penalty was the right thing to do. That it was a 4 minute was extra sweet. Of course, the Flyers didn't convert on the man advantage, but regardless of that Brashear made the smart play. Roenick did the same to Drury later in the game.

Great win tonight. The PP won the game, a pleasant surprize, and the team didn't really seem to miss a beat after Primeau was tossed. Miller looked really good, Hackett was flawless. Pitkanen is huge, and at times--more importantly, the right times--he seemed like a 4th forward. Sure, it's only one game, but for many of us it was our first look at him and it was a good one. Vandermeer very quietly played a very nice game, played some rock solid defense and played the body well. Very encouraging start to the season.

I agree.

I am also wondering if it looks like were going to still be in "nowheresville" like some others have posted on this board. I know it's only one game but it doesn't look that way to me.

BTW, we also played without LeClair.

I am a big fan of Jeff Hackett, especially after meeting him in Boston, let's not forget that t his guy had the starting job in Montreal before he got injured and Theodore came in and stole it. He is technically sound and that is enough for us to go pretty far. We don't have to rely on our goalie to win us games, we play good enough defence to cover, all we nee dis a guy who can control rebounds, handle the puck, and cover his angles. And we have that in Hackett.

I really like Hackett's mask, honoring Parent, Lindberg, and Hextall, and with Rocky on the back of it, very classy and a good way to buy some support from the fans too.

I was very happy to see the leadership and smart play our players used (Roenick, Brash, and Rex saving tony from going after that one player after a check in the back. I was really impressed by hack, he was always in postion and made a nice save with under a minute left in the game. I found myself saying a lot " I dont think roman even knows how to do that". And as one of my new drunk buddies up in section 212 said " Hackett for vezina, vote on your way out!" And i think that sabers22 might be as drunk as the guy i met, calling Brash a chicken b/c he didnt fight when the score was tied, what a MO-RON. Somebody doesn't know how to lose.

Flyers played well.

Hackett was very solid.

Penalty Killing was outstanding, and 2 PP goals to win the game. :yo:

Amonte should have had at least 4. Missed two empty nets and hit Miller in the chest 2 othe times.

We also hit at least 3 posts/crossbars.

All in all a very good start.

The Sabres embaressed me today. Good win by the Flyers. Looks like the same old story here in Buffalo, no goals from anyone. This better change or i'm gonna be pissed.

Well, Flyers are as good as anyone in the league defensively.

The Sabres should score some goals, not having Hecht in the line-up certainly hurts.

A solid start, nothing flashy, but it's 2points. For the 1st 2 peroids it was the same as last season. Dominate time of posession, and nothing to show for it. Prims game misconduct call was a joke.

I saw nothing new, entertainment wise, during stoppages. The flag & skyline, on the ice , during the anthem was nice, but the rest was the same nonsense. So, we had girls handing out the towels & magnet schedules, and they stood behind the clown w/ the mic during stoppages. That's the best Coskey could do?
I was really surprised at the ton of empty seats. My section had empty ROWS! ROWS! Amazing....

how was the primeau ejection a joke???? miro had his back turned and keith lunged at him and slammed him against the boards, He should recieve a 2 or 3 gme suspension as should roenick for the hit on Drury, bunch of cheap shot artists.

For a guy who cries so much you should carry baby Huey as your avatar and not Tito Ortiz.
The hit on Drury was nothing.
Lesson Learned: Don't put yopur back to anyone while near the boards, easpecially if JR is lurking around. Primeau's was a "little" dirty but no way should he have a gotten a game misconduct.

LOL. You really are a sore loser, calling for JR to be suspended on a play that resulted in a penalty on the other player.

#1 With that old broken down hunk of ***** you have in net how cant Buffalo score.

Open mouth, insert foot.

It was a solid win by the Flyers last night, they executed very well. The defense played very well and if you didn't know better you wouldn't of realized there were two rookies (well, one rookie and another almost rookie) in the lineup last night.

I know it's early, but Pitkanen has something I the Flyer haven't had in a while on defense, and that's somebody who's confident on the power play. He looks more mature than his years, that's for sure.

Hackett wasn't tested that much but when he was tested he did what he had to do. I really like Hackett's mechanics, his positioning is very solid.

I'm starting to worry about Tony Amonte's accuracy. He could have had at least 3 goals last night with all the open net he had to shoot at. You can't expect a player to bury every shot, but missing that many great opportunities is worrisome.

On the Buffalo side, Ryan Miller looked very good. On the two PP goals that were scored he was left all alone as the Buffalo defenders seemed to be out to lunch. Also, aside from the incidence with Roenick Chris Drury was invisible.

I'd have to disagree there, I thought the Gagne-Roenick-Amonte line looked real good. Problem was Amonte didn't finish his chances, otherwise JR could have had 2 or 3 assists.

I agree with the ejection just to keep the game from getting out of hand for the hit but what kills the game is that players are turning late to face the boards and setting themselves up to get killed. Miro was sideways and ya Keith could have pulled off but he was only a stride or so away when Miro turned and faced the boards. This happens all the time and frankly the players need to not put themselves in that position.
JR was just riding Drury and did not crush him or push - just rode into the boards - not a cheap shot. If Drury was so mad why did he not drop the gloves and try to go?

You don't seem to realize that seriousness of boarding. It's very dangerous and needs to be controlled before someone really gets hurt.

I know how serious it is. When I saw him stay down for a little bit I started to get a little worried. Primeau shouldn't have hit him but Satan should know better than to leave himself that vulnerable.
