If your cable/satellite supplier does not carry OLN as a basic "free" channel, you won't get it either. Meaning if you have to pay for OLN as a special tier channel, you won't get the game. I think this is OLN's way of forcing the cable/satellite companies to offer OLN as part of the basic cable channel line up.

its gunna be (more) frustrating for us NY/NJ folks i fear when the bruins play the rags, isles, and devils. if its on OLN, they blackout the game thinking the msg network will cover the game and then msg figures OLN is covering the game and we then have to listen on the internet.

Here in Quebec we get it on RDS and nation wide on TSN. I'll watch on TSN cause i can't stand the Habs announcers. They just don't know what they are talking about...

Can see Bergy having a great one tonight!

So far I havn't had a problem with OLN except for how they broadcast games.

But I've heard about all the problems in NY and some durring a Pens game.

I look fowarad to watching the game tonight because it is nice to hear what national broadcasters have to say about your team.

I don't know anything about Dish Network, but if you didn't get the Ranger's game last night, chances are you won't be getting tonights game. Having said that, I should ask, have you gotten any games at all on OLN? If so, maybe you will, maybe last nights was just blacked out? :dunno:

Whats even MORE frustrating is living in Ontario and having games only shown on Sportsnet/TSN regionally. So like for example, next week's game agaisnt Toronto will be shown on Sportsnet in Toronto region only...meaning NHL CI is blacked out in Ottawa area.

unless dishnetwork caves in to comcast's extortion plot this afternoon, the game will not be available to dishnet customers on oln. comcast/oln is engaged in a very underhanded way of doing business, and they are withholding the nhl feeds until dishnetwork and numerous other cable providers bow to their demands--essentially to be moved from a sports tier or high-level programming tier to a "basic" level. the worst part is that even if you are paying for the 180 package (as i am), which includes oln, you are punished by oln because dishnetwork doesn't give the channel to everyone else at the 60 or 120 level. i believe this applies to other cable companies who offer oln only as a "sports package" or "digital package" add-on. jerks. instead, they offer some of their standard programming in its place--my guess is either a special on tracking vermin or chilean pond diving.

silly me--i thought when i first switched years ago to a satellite dish to get away from comcast ("the next time i get good customer service from comcast will be the first") that they were done afflicting my television viewing. i was wrong.

Glad you said something about this now, while my cable company is still open up here. I had no clue it wasn't on NESN, I'd have been pretty ticked off, after ordering Centre Ice and a new box for downstairs (today, as a matter of fact!), just to see I wasted a whole day having the cable guy here, installing all new cable. :madfire:

I had to order OLN just now- $7.00 per month- ridiculous, but selfishly I admit, I want to see the game. They do have it advertised on their website (OLN's) the the Bruins/Montreal game is on tonight- it better be or heads will roll at OLN.

Here is an explanation:

http://www.newsday.com/sports/columnists/ny-spzip234394749aug23,0,7220593.column?coll=ny-sports-columnists

Just when you thought hockey was back, troubling news has surfaced for fans on Long Island and around the metro area.

Cablevision has 3 million subscribers, and if any of them were thinking of spending $4.95 a month for the digital sports tier that carries OLN, the channel that is replacing ESPN and ESPN2 for the NHL's national cable telecasts this season, they can forget it. The puck stops here.

Up to 78 regular-season games, including as many as eight Rangers, eight Devils and eight Islanders games, as well as a slate of Stanley Cup playoff games and Games 1 and 2 of the Finals, won't be available to you on OLN, we've learned.

Why? Because OLN is on expanded basic digital service in 90 percent of its U.S. distribution of 64 million homes, but not in Cablevision households on Long Island, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Westchester and northern New Jersey.

So, in the latest twist in the wacky world of cable, even if you're willing to pay to watch the NHL here, you can't buy it.

"In markets where OLN is offered on a digital sports tier, which includes Cablevision, we are required through our contracts to black out the games," an OLN spokesperson confirmed yesterday. "There will be alternative programming in that time slot. We are working with our affiliates on the situation. We believe OLN should be included on expanded basic, not a sport tier."

Bull-riding rather than Rangers, perhaps?

It's all about leverage: OLN wants Cablevision to make the channel available to all potential viewers and charge Cablevision a broad-based fee. Viewers, again, are the pawns.

Not only will the Rangers-Flyers season opener Oct. 5 - an OLN exclusive - be unavailable to Cablevision subscribers, the rest of OLN's NHL schedule, primarily on Monday and Tuesday nights, will go unseen in one of the NHL's largest markets.

Anytime OLN chooses to air a Rangers, Devils or Islanders game here, Cablevision subscribers will be totally shut out. The conflict affects only Cablevision subscribers, not Time Warner customers in Manhattan and Queens or DirecTV and DISH Network subscribers who receive OLN as part of a general programming package.

I guess this is the catch??
We've got this great new network deal, but people can't even get the games?
I have Comcast and I'm pretty sure OLN is part of basic cable-but that deal with the Dish Network is lame-why bother including a channel into the lineup if they're going to blackout some of the programming? I don't know what I'd do.

Take this for what it's worth, based on a call with a rep from RCN, my cable provider:

If OLN is not on the basic package, but is instead on a typical extended basic package like a "Digital Package", you WILL get coverage unless it is on a "Sports Package" of some sort. This is really just a clarification of earlier posts saying the same thing. But to some of us in Boston, this idea of "basic" cable means the cheapest package. OLN does not have to be a part of the cheap, basic package to get NHL games, so long as it's not on a sports-specific extended package. For example, with RCN it is on a Digital Package, which I had to order on top of my basic package. This Digital Package package also includes some movie stations and some useless stuff like MTV 428, etc. But supposedly as a non-sports specific tier, I'll get NHL games.

I'll post during the game to confirm for anyone interested.

BruinsGirl
10-18-2005, 03:30 PM
For customers of other companies yes..but Dishnetwork only has it as a part of 180 channels (which we have) , and not packages with only 60 or 120 channels.

ONL (Comcast which owns it) is trying to make Dish Network to include OLN in cheaper packages too. ( because now less than 40% viewers can see it)

Because of this even us who pay for OLN won't get it! :madfire: :shakehead :thumbd:
