No crying while drafting. You just made 2 good selections. Remember it's the late round steals that make a draft.
I've been waiting a week to make my 2nd pick.

Are we picking non-NHL players in this draft? Europeans and pre-NHL players?

I wouldn't go back too far.
IMO we should start with the 1917-18 season.

Leaf Lander 08-04-2003, 08:20 AM Fedzs is on the Clock
John Flyers Fan 08-04-2003, 08:29 AM Fedzs is on the Clock
He has a little over 2 hours remaining. If he has not made a selection, we will move on to the next selection. Fedz will not lose the pick, and he is allowed to make a pick whenever, but obviously less players will be available.
Also if he is going to miss 2 picks in a row, then I will look to find a suitable replacement to replace Fedz.
Oiler94 08-04-2003, 08:56 AM If he misses two picks in a row, and hasn't made this selection in the first 22 hours, I really doubt he'll make it in the remaining 2, so let's move on..
John Flyers Fan 08-04-2003, 10:56 AM Fedz time is up.
Maxwell Edison is now on the clock.

2 2nd team All-Star selections
John Flyers Fan 08-05-2003, 02:30 AM Paging the G-Man. He did state he wanted in on this.
G-Man is away on vacation for a week I believe, he is also currently the assistant GM along with Maxwell Edison.
If Fedz has not returned when it comes around for his next selection, then if G-Man is around he will take over the team. Otherwise, Dr. Love will take over the team.
Spitfire 11 is now on the clock for 2 selections.
Brisebois 08-05-2003, 03:47 AM Hey if Fedz doesn't show up in the second round, I'll be more than happy to take his spot.

John Flyers Fan 08-05-2003, 03:43 PM If Fedz does not make his selection before Maxwell Edison makes his then he is out.
Since The G Man is also away for this entire week, he can't take over for Fedz.
Dr. Love will be the replacement GM for Fedz.
G Man can get another team if someone else drops out later.

Yes, but we just found out that he is going to be away for another 8 days.

Fedz can always start another draft at a later date.
John Flyers Fan 08-06-2003, 02:01 AM An unnamed drafter would like to chang one of his previous selections.
My opinion is that he can't make a change, but I will ask the question to fellow drafters.

Dr Love 08-06-2003, 04:46 PM With two picks Vancouver selects Bryan Trottier and Chris Chelios.

Denis Potvin a weak pick ????
He was a GREAT defenseman, the 2nd best that i've seen (Bourque).
I have about 10 goalies ranked similarly, I will take one when they are nearly gone although I am a little surprised that goalies went as early as they did.
Spitfire has about 4 hours remaining ***.

John Flyers Fan 08-12-2003, 07:59 AM Spitfire may be a no-show.
he hasn't posted anywhere on HFBoards since his last selection.
What should we do if he misses his 2 selections in 4 hours ?? I guess technically since he has back-to=back selections we could give him 48 hours instead of 24.
#1. Give his team to The G Man or another poster.
#2. Move on with the draft and let him make his 2 selections, when he returns, as long as it doesn't come back around to his turn again.
Let me hear some opinions, either here or via PM.

How about a compromise between the two... give him 36 hours [really there's no reason why someone needs another day to make 2 straight selections] and if he doesn't respond then give the team up to G Man? Or just let G Man "pinch hit" as he puts it.
He's fairly reliable so I say we give him the full 48 hours. He hasn't missed before so he deserves the chance, IMO.

You forgot to remove Larry Robinson. He'd already been picked.
Frightened Inmate #2 08-16-2003, 11:57 AM I am very proud to select Max Bentley, who played with the Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers from 1940-54. In this time he was able to win one hart trophy, two art ross trophies and a lady bing.

Frightened Inmate #2 08-16-2003, 04:34 PM The Quebec Nordique are very very pleased to select from Newmarket Ontario, the great Boston defenseman/Right Winger, Dit Clapper. He is the only player to be named an all star at defense and a forward position.
Heres hoping i didn't pull a Larry Robinson and find out that he was already picked, although I did check page four as I was told to do.

Best player in the 80's not named Gretzky. Had he played in the NHL in the 80's, he'd have racked up 600 goals in that decade alone. Unfortunately, when he came over he was already way past his prime and had to adjust to a new ice surface and playing style.
Although you can never teach an old dog new tricks, he still had 4 great seasons.
John Flyers Fan 08-16-2003, 06:26 PM Again selecting from a list Dr. Love provided;

Spitfire11 08-17-2003, 07:01 PM Nice pick Mac, Durnan was the goalie I was planning on taking, he also accomplished all that in only 7 seasons.
Leaf Lander 08-17-2003, 09:29 PM The Maple Leafs extensively searched for a left winger

Frightened Inmate #2 08-18-2003, 07:20 AM #17 Wendel Clark

he'll play well with gilmour get 50 goals
his prime years were b4 gilmou r arrived wendel was already pretty beaten up by 1993 and he was just 26

his prime years were b4 gilmou r arrived wendel was already pretty beaten up by 83 and he was just 26
How do you figure he'll get 50 when his season high was 43, and that was his only 40+ goal season? Clark is a nice player, but I agree with Maxwell, you picked him way too high. 6 30+ goal seasons and only 1 season of more than 60 points. Nice playoff stats, but that's about it.
edit: looked at the stats wrong
I agree Wendel probably shouldn't have been picked, or at least not till near the last round, but he does bring more than just scoring. Thing I find interesting is GW made a top 50 + players list and I see at least 4 undrafted lws on that list, and there's a Leaf HOF lw available.
The G Man 08-18-2003, 10:18 AM I guess with Wendell he could play LW and in theory D giving him some added value.
Leaf Lander 08-18-2003, 11:36 AM wendel in his prime would do well with gilmour in his prime
Its a dream team
I almost took andreychuk
Im going after as many leafs as I can get
If clark came to a stacked leafs club Im sure his #'s would be even better.
Reg Season 793 330 234 564 1690 Playoffs 95 37 32 69 201
don't forget Clark is the best player to be picked out of the 1985 draft! and a former #1 overall! :teach:
Frightened Inmate #2 08-19-2003, 06:24 AM Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Richter, Bill Ranford, Igor Larionov, and maybe even Sean Burke would rate higher than Clarke if you ask me.

KillToronto 08-19-2003, 10:29 AM The Philadelphia Flyers select from Quebec City
Joe Malone
One of the great goal scorers of all time, including the epic year of 1917-18. 44 goals in just 20 games.
This is the ultimate steal of this draft. Bar none.
KillToronto 08-19-2003, 10:30 AM And why hasn't anybody chosen the God of russian hockey, Boris Mikhailov yet?
Herby 08-19-2003, 01:45 PM Los Angeles Kings select....from Brantford, ONT. Winger Bill Cook.
Frightened Inmate #2 08-19-2003, 01:47 PM Well I don't know if Joe Malone can be considered a steal, I was considering taking him earlier but the game of hockey was much different back then (a time only Gee Wally can recall). What the hell is a rover?
Lard_Lad 08-19-2003, 02:06 PM What the hell is a rover?
A rover was usually the best player on his team, and pretty much played all over the ice, wherever the puck went, hence the name.
And yeah, it was very different in Malone's day. The rover was gone by then, but there was no forward passing allowed outside the neutral zone.
Evil Sather 08-19-2003, 03:18 PM Back in the day, there were 6 skaters plus the goalie, 2 on D, 3 Forwards, and a rover, who I guess could be considered the 3rd Defenseman.
Leaf Lander 08-19-2003, 03:24 PM whos the most famous rover ever?
ok name asmany as you can
and was Paul Coffey like a rover?
we had rovers in pond hockey they were the ones wh o got the puck when it went of the frog pond:)
whos the most famous rover ever?
Cyclone Taylor or Hobey Baker.

Jackson would score 241 goals and 234 assists, at a time when the 200 goal plateau signified a Hall of Fame career. He was First Team All-Star left wing in 1932, '34, '35 and '37, and Second Team in 1933.

"Alexander Malstev is one of the brightest stars in the history of Soviet and international hockey. Throughout his hockey career, Maltsev was an advocate of the so-called "creative hockey". His talents included fascinating 1-on-1 skills and uncanny puck handling, very stylish and speedy skating, fast decision making on ice and incredible tactical sense of the game. He was a master of magnificent improvisations on ice. Being very strong individually, Maltsev was also a team player. He was famous for being able to play successfully in any forward position based on the needs of the national team."
In 830 career games, he tallied an incredible 541 goals. In addition he was a 7 time USSR all star and was voted MVP in 1972.

Good Mikhailov replacement :)
Pangolin 08-21-2003, 11:42 PM The Vancouver Millionaires select one of the first ever superstar to have played hockey, Frederick "Cyclone" Taylor. Listed as a defenseman in the HHoF, played all skating positions.
Taylor, a forward, was moved to defense to play a position called "cover-point" because as a forward he was always too far in front of his linemates. As a defenseman he could roam the ice at will and get back to his own end of the ice in time to make defensive plays.
Scoring a career NHA/PCHA total of 205 goals, 313 points in 189 games, (during which time only 1st assists counted).
He was also the PCHA all time leading scorer. A league in which 24 games were played per season and only a couple players gets over a point a game. But Taylor averaged a goal a game.
A hockey legend if there ever was one.
