Why can't they do this? It's good to see Thomas sign with a good team.

The thing I laugh at is Stumpy for 900k and they won't tally up and offer for one of the best young players in the game... Muckler has his thumb up his ass if you ask me he is lowballing one of the brightest stars in the league who want's to play for the sens but what does Muckler do he signs Smolinski *spelling* and lets Havlat sit. If I was a Sens fan I would be a little pissed but since I am a Leafs fan I am rather happy ;) Go leafs go...

Totally different situations.

It's not about who's better, it's about how the system works. When you're a veteran like Thomas with unrestricted free agency, your salary scale is not at all the same to what someone like Havlat with 2 seasons under his belt and no real free agency to speak of should expect to receive.

You'd never forgive Thomas?

What's he supposed to do, sit at home and be loyal to the Leafs as opposed to making almost $1 million to play for a Stanley Cup contender when there are no other offers apparently out there for him.

Yeah, he's a real *******. I forgot he signed his soul to the Leafs when he played for them.

Now, if he turned Toronto down to go to Ottawa, then you could be pissed.

God...

Thank you for bringing sense into this thread

Good for him if he signs. He'll help out any team he's on - especially a contender like Ottawa.

you dont understand.
i'm wrong in saying i wouldnt forgive him, my blue blood got carried away
i just dont want it to happen :p

thomas would have loved to come back
but they never seemed to give it much thought

lets say he goes to ottawa.
ottawa at toronto; i think if i'm steve thomas i want to put on quite a show-
i'm not blaming him if he signs with 'them'
after all, he wants to play, and has no contract.

i ask you this:
how often do we get burned by ex-leafs or toronto area born kids playing against us.

this is why i dont want this to happen
the diehard legion understands this.

They speculated about this on leafs Lunch a couple days ago, you sure this is fact or just some speculation that is being passed off as fact?

Thomas can go where he wants. Why he should feel any loyality to the Leafs who have shown none to him? He wanted to come back and end his carrer with the leafs and was willing to take a very reduced salary to do so, they turned him down. If he goes to the Senators, plays and ends his career in his home prov. and maybe wins a cup, good for him. Gilmour played for the Habs and no Leaf fan held it against him, why hold it against Thomas?

Thomas would be an awesome signing for the sens.

It looks like a Comrie for Gomez trade is in the works too.

This all bodes very badly for the Leafs.

Comrie is a far better player than is gfomez and it would be just like Lamorello to pull this off.

Thomas I think could be the difference for Ottawa.

They will battle again very likely in the conference finals.

Perhaps JF can pull a rabbit out of his ass...

Comrie may have trouble fitting in with the defensive style of the Devils, its possible that trade will happen, but they would be giving up a good two-way player in Gomez for a less skilled defensive foward in Comrie. But maybe thats what they want. I can't believe they havn't signed Oates yet, but thats me

That's not what I am saying at all.. What I am saying is that they went out and signed Bryan Smo... to a 2 million plus contract now they are going to offer or supposedly offering Thomas 900k to 1 mill.. yet they send there one of the leagues brightest young stars away now explain how that makes sense? You would have figured Havlid would have been priority in the off season not Bryan Smo... I just find it weird.

I agree, Ottawa is trying to be tough, but they just end up looking moronic in the end. The 900K they're giving an old guy like Steve Thomas is a a lot more money than the contract difference Havlat was offered and what he wants. Why not just give him the few extra hundred thousand dollars or at least take a more friendly approach with the guy? He's a 22 year old kid who can potentially play another 15 years for you. Why do you want to alienate him?

Stephen

Also, the system of rewarding old veterans with good contracts while trying to screw over the rookies and 2nd contract players is completely backwards. You pay someone based on merit, if you want to be responsible. You don't pay Thomas and Smolinski almost $3 million while you let a breakthrough player stew for a year, especially when he isn't asking for the moon. Ottawa is pretty deep, but they're not the Canadiens of the late 70's. They can't expect to be as good as they can be without Havlat in the lineup.
