David A. Rainer 10-10-2003, 11:08 AM Fleury makes his first career start. I guess Huet will get the start, coincidentally where he played his first career game (relieving Storr in a route that the Kings came back to win).
Game time is at 4:30PM PST and is TV on Fox Sports West.
Prediction: 2-1 Kings as Fleury faces a lot of shots and stands on his head, but to no avail.

Avery is at the funeral so my guess is:
Frolov - Stumpel - Palffy
Robitaille - Armstrong - Klatt
Chartrand - Belanger - Laperriere
Brennan - Pirnes - Brown

Sad about the funeral but with Avery gone, at least our penalties should be down!!!!

Brown was one of our best players last night.I think he should get some time on the second line.Just wishful thinking I guess.
palffytofrovlov 10-10-2003, 01:03 PM I say Kings win 4-2... Brown gets his first goal infront of family and friends.... Frolov also scores.... :)
David A. Rainer 10-10-2003, 01:25 PM I just heard that Matty is out with nerve damage in his arm. Does anyone have better info? What kind of nerve damage and is it serious?
And does anyone have any clue when Miller is due back? With Matty out, we sure as hell could use him right now.
Captain Ron 10-10-2003, 02:56 PM Ha Fleury gives up a goal the first shot he faces. :handclap:
palffytofrovlov 10-10-2003, 03:10 PM So far so good... just keep shooting the puck... :)

Did you hear about the nerve damage from Hacksaw?
I had nerve damage in the past with similar symptoms.
I heard Miller is about 3 weeks away from hitting the ice

It's tempting isn't it.
That was nothing short of intent to injure Gleason moved out of the way and Orpik shot his knee straight out.
Brodie562 10-10-2003, 04:27 PM Gleason got knee'd Pirnes was checked from behind.
Legionnaire 10-10-2003, 04:27 PM Gleason. IMO it was a cheapshot. Orpik lead with his knee..of course Gleason is going to try to get out of the way.
Face Wash 10-10-2003, 04:29 PM OK, only reason I ask is ESPN has it as Pirnes...
Big McLargehuge 10-10-2003, 04:29 PM It was an attempted clean hit, but Gleason avoided it and, pardon for the pun, but in a knee jerk reaction he stuck his knee out.
I don't feel it was completely intentional, but that doesn't undo the injury. That was ugly. Orpik will definitely get suspended for a while regardless.

There is no excuse for someone to stick their leg out to impede another player.
Legionnaire 10-10-2003, 04:33 PM You know I think they should change the rules when it comes to supensions....If an intent to injure is determined, then the guilty party should be suspended for as long as the injured player is out.

Not a bad idea, but what happens if someone useless like Peter Worrell or someone is injured by a Star player...everyone would be calling for the end to that rule.

On the Paper Boys Timmah was his usual confident self. Thinks this is the "best Kings team ever!"
He said we blew it against Detriot, but points out it was without our 2 best defenseman and two of our 3 best forwards.
He said he thinks we are alot deeper than last year, mentioned Brown, and Gleason(must have been taped!) He said Allison and Deadmarsh will be back in November and we will not hessistate to improve the team if they are in contention.
Koltsov71 10-10-2003, 06:08 PM Very good man! After all, who would have thought a team with a whopping 17 million dollar payroll wouldn't play top flight hockey. :joker:

Koltsov71 10-10-2003, 06:12 PM Belanger sure looked good. Beautiful shot on the breakaway. Box score says he had nine shots!
All homerism aside, I think Fleury played very well. Kept the game under control. Also solid game by Huet. He didn't face much rubber, but what he did face he stopped.
Regarding the Gleason hit.. It looked questionable, I admit. I hope Gleason will be ok. Did he earn a spot in the top six, or was he only playing because of the injuries? Just wondering.
Hell, I bet you guys wish we were in your division huh? That's six wins right there.
JDB3939 10-10-2003, 06:33 PM I see where you are coming from as a Penguins fan, but ask yourself. Would you see it the same way if it were Mario or Straka and not Gleason, but I don't agree with you. NHL players sans Brian Marchment know not to lead into a check with a knee
Being there, Orpik was giving a clean hipcheck. He was already airborne and body fully extended and Gleason tried to avoid an unavoidable hit and got hurt because of it. I saw no knee jerk reaction from Orpik. He layed his body out there for the big hit and Gleason instead of taking it, tried to jerk himself out of the way and in the process he destroyed his knee. Replays may show it in a different respect, but that is at super slo-mo. Happening in the moment and seeing it in replay from 8 different angles slowed down is very different. In a hipcheck like that, you always fully extend your legs and such. Orpik was expecting to tag him with his hip not his knee. I have watched Orpik play for years now, never have I seen him give a hit like that. He is not another Bryan Marchment. Having talked to Brooks before personally, I know he is ashamed of himself for hurting another player in a questionable manner like that and will be sure to make his checks cleaner from now out. If he hasn't taken that attitude, I will be amazed.
On another note, I pray to god Sims is not an enforcer prospect for you guys.
zeppelin97 10-10-2003, 06:58 PM Being there, Orpik was giving a clean hipcheck.
I thought the intention wasn't dirty on orpik's part. Our announcer Jim Fox pointed out whenever its knee on knee, regardless of the intentions, you can never qualify it as a clean.
Simply put: knee on knee hits are nasty and i wouldn't say they are clean since they are viscious and not really a goal for checkers (ie most checkers don't aim for the knees...unless your marchment).
swinginutter* 10-10-2003, 06:58 PM Well for you D. Brown fans, he actually was moved to the first line in the third, and Frolov was moved down to the fourth.
As far as the knee on knee it was disgraceful. Orpik should have had his ass handed to him, and although our medical was claiming leg injury, I just don't know. His knee was bent back pretty far, and I wouldn't be surprised if he tore ligaments. Although AM lost it, I have serious issues with his decisions at times. I mean what the ***** is the problem with having an enforcer in the line-up AT ALL TIMES! And I mean HEAVYWEIGHT not three middleweights! I just don't *****ing get it. I don't have hindsight and I can't predict when something is going to happen. But hello, just put him in your line-up, you don't even have to play him. Norton is out, and he was probably slotted for the number six D position. We have Brennan, but no lets sit him for Chartrand and Sim. Same thing, different year with nastiness. WE JUST DON'T HAVE IT! We will be *****ed with on a constant basis, if we don't give teams something to think about. We don't have one nasty SOB in the back to sort our business. So we'll just have to continue to see that ugly ******* Holmstrom, and other power forwards run over our goalie. The injury may have still happened, but if we don't send a message to them in return, then where is our justice. We're still *****ed from Andy Sutton, and who is he? Some piece of ***** sixth defenseman. I'm no coach and I love AM, but i'm really over the "tough team to play against" slogan. Because we have players like Modry just skating by when ***** goes down! Maybe Cechmanek is right we do play European style, and it's probably referring to our softness.
Am I frustrated, yeah just a wee bit! Every team in the league has an enforcer on their team, and some two or three. No more healthy scratch BS, play them already!
We now have four D out. Matty, Miller, Gleason, Norton. And same thing for forwards. It's a curse that I wish would just end. With our roster being so thin, why can't we play both Brennan and Flinn. I thought they were great in Vegas!
BTW Fleury was unbelievable. He's a lightning bolt in the net, and Pittsburgh fans should be pretty happy.
David A. Rainer 10-10-2003, 07:01 PM Being there, Orpik was giving a clean hipcheck. No offense dude, but when you see the replay you might be saying something completely different. I fully understand that sitting in the stands and at full speed you can view it as a clean hit. But once you see the replays, you'll see Orpik stick out his leg at the very last second. And it's not just a subtle extend both legs for better balance when hitting someone. It's a complete knee-straight-out-at-the-very-last-second blatant hit - only one leg was extended (not both as would be expected for balance), the one that caught Gleason's knee. I doubt he was trying to injure Gleason, but he was definitely trying to get his knee into him and ended up going knee on knee (or upper leg as the broadcast stated that Gleason hurt his leg and not his knee). It may not be intentional, but it was definitely reckless.
Again, from the stands you might have thought it was a physical but clean hit (which was my first reaction). But when you get to those replays, you'll see something different.
Winston Wolf 10-10-2003, 07:03 PM Regarding the Gleason hit.. It looked questionable, I admit. I hope Gleason will be ok. Did he earn a spot in the top six, or was he only playing because of the injuries? Just wondering.
I've watched both of the Kings games and IMO, he's been one of their best defenseman, if not the best. The pairing of Holland - Gleason seemed to be out on the ice as much as any other pairing before Gleason got injured, so I definitely think he has earned his spot.

I'd agree. I think Gleason has been one of our best d-men so far this season. I think Holland looks a little overmatched out there at times.
Anyone else extremely impressed with what they've seen from Visnovski so far? I thought I was imagining things, but I saw Visnovski out muscling two, not one but TWO, Pens fowards down in the corner in the first period. And it wasn't just the first period, he was muscling up in the Detroit game and throughout the Pitt. game. Couple that with all those freakin' shots he's blocking - he's on fire! You may be right, but I still stand behind the point that Gleason take the hit. Avoiding a hit that late can cause a serious injury to yourself. In that situation, you know you are going to get lit up and there is no getting out. Take the hit and brace yourself as best you can. Orpik will serve his suspension, just as one of his biggest fans. I do not wish for him to get a Marchment type reputation. He had some other great hits in that game beforehand.
Also, the refs were absolutely brutal in that game. Nothing was called on your Kings, you have to admit that. And they did just as much as the Pens if not more. I didn't see Klatt at the end of the game, was he stuck up Mario's ass maybe?

Well, I did see different angles on every replay out there. It was dirty plain and simple. Watch sportscenter or Foxsports Pittsburgh or whatever channel you have out there. He didn't have intent, but who does? Nobody wants to see anybody get seriously injured. But you should learn that as a kid. You get beat don't stick your knee out, to make up for it. It was dirt plain and simple. He was not intending a hip check...........he got beat, and although hockey is a game of inches, he lost an inch, and gained it with his knee. Brooks may be a bice guy, but he was wrong and he needs to pay (suspension). Other teams in this league seriously need a dosage of what our fans have endured this season and last.
I couldn't agree with you more about Sim. But at least he was standing up for his team mate, something Corvo forgot when he had a chance.

Looking at it. It wasn't that clean. Orpik let his knee drop out a bit. Gleason should have just taken the initial hit. I just don't want Orpik to get a Bryan Marchment type reputation around here.
As for what Kings fans endured. Try being a Pens fan and losing every single star your team has had for the past 10 years except one. And the only reason he is still here is because he owns the damn team. You have gained Allison, Deadmarsh, Palfy, Frolov, Brown. The Pens have gained Rico Fata....

I don't think he's a dirty player (especially because he only has a handful of NHL games under his belt), but he did do something fairly reckless. It's going to take more than one instance to develop a reputation, so I wouldn't worry about that.

i think visnovsky and belanger were our two best players last night. belganer's defense was solid (penguins are offensive powerhouses of course), and he's been quite a sparkplug on offense. he got a ton of shots. as for visnovsky, dfa said most of it. i think the most critical part is that he's really battling along the boards and is attacking the puck carriers really aggressively. he is using his body more, and more effectively, than i can remember.

Sorry about that. You're right! But if you've followed our team's history, we've been snake bitten for awhile now.
I guess i'm a bit greedy for a successful team out here, and our injury bug is just disgraceful. I do feel bad for the Pens, Sabres, Oilers. But you seem to always pull through with excellent drafting. I don't feel bad for the Sens and they were in the same boat not to long ago. Hopefully our league gets sorted out next year. I'm tired of players wanting to hang up their skates in NY, and ride out their free lunch ticket.
As far as Orpik goes, he won't get that rep if he tries that ***** again. If he does, I hope he gets some payback.
