p.l.f. 10-10-2003, 07:05 PM what are the line combos?
Shedden arrives with the reputation as a players’ coach, but it probably will be his roster management ability, and not his sympatico with players, that will get the early test.
St. John’s begins the season light on the forward lines and overloaded on the back end, with eight healthy defenceman.
Shedden will be hoping Mike Penny, confirmed as the St. John’s general manager Friday, can act soon to balance the load.
This is also a relatively young team, with an average age just over 23. There are only four players — Marc Moro, Aaron Gavey, Josh Holden and Jeff Daw — who qualify under the AHL veteran rules (clubs are permitted six). If you subtract them and 27 year-old Memphis callup Kahlil Thomas, the average age drops to under 22.
Another concern: lack of size and toughness on the forward lines. Holden, who had 123 penalty minutes last season, is the only centre or winger under contract who went over 100 PIMs last season. And he’s not an enforcer.
As for heftiiness, Luca Cereda is the lone forward listed as weighing over 200 pounds on the official roster submitted to the AHL this week
Here’s the capsule view, by position, of the Leafs team that will take to the ice in Winnipeg tonight:
Goal
St. John’s is relatively solid, with Jamie Hodson and Sebastien Centomo, both in the last years of their three-year NHL entry-level contracts. Hodson seems to have finally shaken off the effects of extensive knee surgery as a junior. Centomo looks to display the form that made him St. John’s No. 1 netminder at the end of the 2001-02 campaign. Shedden is prepared to let them battle early for the No. 1 job, although the situation could change later in the year if and when Toronto netminder Trevor Kidd returns from shoulder surgery. That will force the big Leafs to consider their options, possibly including returning Mikael Tellqvist to St. John’s.
Depth is provided by the presence of J.F. Racine in Memphis.Continued from page C1
Defence
Lots of young promise, with Carlo Colaiacovo, widely touted as the Leafs top pro prospect; 2002 Canadian junior defenceman of the year Brendan Bell; and big Czech David Turon, who like Colaiacovo and Bell, played in the last world junior championship.
Technically, Pierre Hedin is also a rookie, although at 25, he already has a half-dozen years in the Swedish elite league.
In a situation similar to that among forwards, hard-hitting Marc Moro is the only rearguard on the team who had more than 100 PIMs in any league last season. That means sophomore Jay Harrison (2-8-10, 72 PIMs) will need to step up his physical play.
Also back is Regan Kelly, another second-year blueliner, and Chris Chartier, who will get one last chance to prove that the offensive skills that made him a junior star can translate into the pro game.
Don’t be surprised if Karel Pilar eventually shows up with St. John’s on a conditioning assignment. Rookie Maxim Kondratiev, who is starting the season in Toronto, may also wind up with the AHL Leafs at some point in the season.
Forward
Holden, last year’s MVP in St. John’s; Leeb, the team’s leading scorer in 2002-03 (35-26-61); Gavey, slated for a captaincy; and Daw, the team’s oldest player at 31, create a solid core. Once Shea Heights native Harold Druken’s is cleared to return from rehabbing his surgically repaired shoulder and if and when the AHL Leafs get another forward from Toronto (Alexei Ponikarovsky, Matt Stajan or Nathan Perrott), St. John’s should have two quality lines. After that, however, there are a lot of question marks. Rookie Kyle Wellwood, who looks like he can create Bob Wren-like magic with the puck, had 100 points in the OHL last season.
However, the leap from junior to the AHL is a big one. Just ask sophomore Nathan Barrett, who won a WHL scoring title two years ago, but could manage just nine goals and 22 assists in his rookie year with St. John’s. Former first-round pick Cereda will one again try to prove he’s not a bust, He’s joined in third- and fourth-line territory by the speedy Thomas, rugged Robb Palahnuk, rookie tryout Kris Newbury, who brings a pesky, gritty reputation from the junior ranks, and the similarly ballyhooed Ben Ondrus, who had an impressive training camp until he was sidelined with a broken jaw. Ondrus, who has been offered a contract, is expected to join the team in Winnipeg.
sjmapleleafsfan 10-11-2003, 09:48 AM what are the line combos?
p.l.f,
To be honest I am not sure of the line combos, but it should be safe to say that with a couple of forwards out due to injury that a couple of defensemen may be used up front on opening night. It is either that or the Leafs will go with just 3 lines and 6 defensemen, which means that 2 defensemen will have to sit out. Interesting to see what happens tonight.
The Leafs 2003-2004 Opening Day Roster (Subject to Change)

Pierre Hedin, Regan Kelly, Chris Chartier, Marc Moro, Carlo Colaiacovo, Brendan Bell, Jay Harrison and David Turon.

Frankie 10-11-2003, 01:02 PM gonna be another long year.
last year they started the year with these forwards: wren, leeb, healey, holden, boyes, poni, gavey, doull, mills, cereda, barrett, warren.
this year: daw, gavey, holden, leeb, cereda, barrett, palahnuk, wellwood, newbery, thomas. druken is hurt.
last year's team looked like all stars compared to this year. the goaltending was better last year with telly. the defence might be better, but it probably won't be because these guys are so young. it will take them all year to get up to par.

Manitoba Moose 4
Hunting Season is Now Open...Leafs Get Their Moose...Win 5-4...Rookies Have Great Night
The Manitoba Moose opened the scoring Saturday night on their first shot of the hockey game. The goal came off the stick of Fedor Fedorov, his 1st of the season, with the assists to Kirill Koltsov and Jaroslav Obsut at the 4:10 mark on the PP. The Leafs responded with a goal off the stick of second year rearguard Jay Harrison, his 1st of the season, with the lone assist to Brad Leeb at the 7:51 mark. After the teams traded goals they traded punches when Leaf Josh Holden and Moose Nathan Smith squared off. The Leafs took a 2-1 lead when Kris Newbury scored his first professional goal, with the assists to Chris Chartier and newly acquired Mike Brown at the 11:39 mark on the PP. It did not take Brown long to demonstrate why he is with the Leafs. Brown squared off with Manitoba's Martin Grenier. The Leafs were pressuring the Moose when Jeff Daw went in on a breakaway but failed to score. Sebastien Centomo came out of the game with 3:53 left in the 1st period when he went to the bench for some water and was not allowed to return to the crease by the official. Hodson temporarily replaced him. Centomo returned to the game after the next whistle. The Leafs opened a 3-1 lead late in the first period with a goal off the stick of Marc Moro, his 1st of the season, unassisted at the 19:18 mark. Shots in the first period were 13-7 in favor of the Leafs.
The Moose entered the second period trailing 3-1. The Moose came close a few times hitting the post and crossbar early. The Moose made it a one-goal game with a goal off the stick of Kirill Koltsov, his 1st of the season, with the assists to Fedor Fedorov and Pat Kavanagh at the 4:40 mark on the PP. The Leafs regained the two-goal lead with a goal off the stick of Kyle Wellwood, his first professional goal, with the lone assist to Nathan Barrett at the 9:33 mark. Shots in the second period were 7-6 Moose, 19-14 through two periods in favor of the Leafs.
The Moose made it a one-goal game again with a goal off the stick of Kirill Koltsov, his 2nd of the game, with the assists to Pat Kavanagh and Fedor Fedorov at the 6:31 mark on the PP. Centomo stopped Ryan Reddy on a breakaway in the third period. Mike Brown gave the Leafs a 5-3 lead with his first of the season, with the assists to Pierre Hedin and Brendan Bell at the 14:12 mark on the PP. Brown recorded the Gordie Howe hat trick with an assist and a fight in the first period and a goal in the third. The Moose made it 5-4 with a goal off the stick of Brandon Reid, his first of the season, with the assists to Fedor Fedorov and Jaroslav Obsut at the 18:53 mark with Auld on the bench. The Moose pulled goaltender Alex Auld again for the extra attacker but to no avail. Marc Moro and Martin Grenier fought at the end of the game. Shots in the third period were 13-12 in favor of the Leafs, 32-26 in favor of the Leafs in the game.

Mike Brown will provide the Leafs with the toughness (enforcer) that their line-up needed. Any goals or assists that he gets will be a bonus for the hockey club.

The Messenger,
Mike Brown did play with the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks.
With the Canucks organization:
2000-2001 he played one game with Vancouver (0-0-0, 5 PIM)
2001-2002 he played 31 games with Manitoba (7-9-16, 155 PIM)
2001-2002 he played 15 games with Vancouver (0-0-0, 72 PIM)
No news on Colaiacovo's injury. I guess they will examine the injury today (Sunday) and decide tomorrow morning (Monday) if he is or will be ready to play tomorrow afternoon. All speculation on my part.
Ben Ondrus is with the St. John's Maple Leafs in Winnipeg and he is indeed recovering from a broken jaw.
Mike Brown will become a fan favorite here in St. John's in no time.

The Messenger,
Your welcome. No I wasn't at the game. I listened to the game on the radio. I wish I was at the game. The game was at the Winnipeg Arena.
The St. John's Maple Leafs 4th goal was scored by Kyle Wellwood with the lone assist to Nathan Barrett at the 9:33 mark of the second period. The reason that I have it Wellwood from Barrett is because that is what it was.
Here are the players that played last night:
Forwards (10):
Aaron Gavey, Jeff Daw, Robb Palahnuk, Kris Newbury, Nathan Barrett, Mike Brown, Josh Holden, Brad Leeb, Thomas Khalil and Kyle Wellwood.
Defensemen (7):
Pierre Hedin, Regan Kelly, Chris Chartier, Marc Moro, Carlo Colaiacovo, Brendan Bell and Jay Harrison.
Goaltender (1):
Sebastien Centomo
I would think that the Leafs went with the 10 forwards and started with 7 defensemen. When Colaiacovo left the game in the first period I would say that they just left it like it was with 10 forwards and 6 defensmen. Having an extra forward is not that bad.

So they must have changed the scoring on the goal ...Was it originally credited to Barrett..
I noticed Luca Cereda and Turon not dressed ... Healthy scratches?? or injuries if you know...
Based on the Play by play ... who do you think was the best Forward and Best dman in the game for St. Johns..

The Messenger,
I follow the road games on Radio Newfoundland (930) and after the game is over I usually check the ahl.com for the scoring summary to make sure it is the same as what I have from the Leafs broadcast.
No they did not change the scoring on the goal, it was Wellwood from Barrett from the beginning. Visit the Manitoba Moose web site and watch the highlights of last night's game and you will see Wellwood scoring in the highlight clip.
Cereda has an injury of some sort and Turon was a healthy scratch.
Based on the Play By Play I thought that the best Forward was Mike Brown and the best Defensemen was Jay Harrison. Brown had a goal, assist and a fight and seemed to be involved each time he was on the ice. Harrison seemed to play a simple game and he seemed to be playing with an edge.

No problem. Check out www.sjmapleleafs.ca for Radio Newfoundland's broadcast. Leafs Play By Play man Brian Rogers calls a great game and really gets into the game.
Yeah Brown and Harrison would have been my first selections, but if I had to pick another forward and defensemen it would have been Brad Leeb (Forward) and Marc Moro (Defensemen).
