Well, the team has finally been named:

http://www.echl.com/upload_images/VictoriaLogo.jpg
VICTORIA, B.C. –Victoria announced on Friday that the team’s nickname would be Salmon Kings. Scheduled to begin play in 2004-05 at the 7,300-seat Victoria Arena, the Salmon Kings are the newest member of the ECHL and the first ECHL team outside of the United States.

In just 12 days, the team received more than 2,000 entries in its “Name The Team” contest.

“This name says Vancouver Island,” said Graham Lee, “It will be distinctive in the ECHL and when other cities’ fans see our team name on their schedules, they’ll know that Victoria is in town.”

Salmon Kings links the team to the distinctive British heritage of Victoria while also referring to one of the great resources of Vancouver Island, renowned for sport fishing and tourism.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

With over 2,000 responses for naming the team, this shows that people do actually care, regardless of what some of you say.

Personally, I think the logo is horrible - they could've done a much better job.

The name is fine but that has to be the biggest piece of crap logo ive ever seen. Seriously, did they have a kindergarten class draw that for them?

Question: is this a new arena? Or is it the same rickety old barn downtown?

I haven't lived in Victoria since 1999 so I'm a bit out of date... but holy crap, if it's the same arena, they shouldn't hold professional hockey there. It's about one body-check away from collapsing.

Exactly where Memorial Arena was. They tore it down and are building on the same site now.

Victoria Salsa are junior A....

ECHL is professional hockey. Its the level below the AHL. Every NHL team has a few prospects playing in the ECHL with their affiliate.

It looks like an advertisement for canned tuna to me.

Not the best logo around but not the worst either.

Check out this site; it's got lots of details about the new arena as well as some nice pics. It sure does sound impressive. A nice addition to the city.

What a God-awful logo. Keep in mind, though, it's pretty difficult to make a salmon look intimidating. ;)

Unfortunately I cannot agree. It's sooo ugly it sucks! ;)

It's going to be great to have a local team in a decent arnea to watch. When they were taking down the old arena, a huge chuck of it just collapsed, and it was just lucky that it fell inwards and not out... onto Blanchard St. squishing passing motorists. I remember not being suprised.

What the new team in Victoria needs to do is convince Brian Burke to move his ECHL affiliation from Columbia where it is now to Victoria. Last year there were a number of players belonging to the Canucks who played in Columbia.

I would expect the canucks to make a push for that as soon as the canucks' current contract with columbia expires. I agree, it would be very cool.

Five, actually:

Justin Morrison
Darrell Hay
Regan Darby
Tim Smith
Denis Martynyuk

This year, there's only three:

Jesse Schultz
Tim Smith
Rob McVicar

2,000 people on an Island with approximately 570,000 population (and all I counted were Victoria, Nanaimo, Duncan, Parksville, Port Alberni, Courtenay and Campbell River...nevermind everything in between)....that doesn't sound like strong support to me.

Canadian Chris
10-11-2003, 11:59 PM
that's not actually too bad considering that likely no reponses would've come from PA, CV, Parksville(maybe a couple) or CR....

I'd say pretty good support since it is going to be 2000 responses from different people likely

I totally disagree. It's a distinctive, West Coast name that is representative of where we live. Names like the Salsa are just plain stupid for teams in BC. As to the logo, it works. There is no way you could do much better with a salmon.

By the way, there is a very good lacross team called the Salmon Bellies and they aren't embarrassing anyone.

cast my vote for yet another bad logo (don't get me started again on that crap down in Phoenix that's supposed to look like a meaner coyote....)

however, glad to now that minor league pro hockey returns to the NW. good for Victoria.

I believe it is a play on the term "King Salmon" which is an American expression for what we refer to as Spring or Chinook Salmon.

My favourite has to be the Jacksonville Lizard Kings of the ECHL and their second logo. As far as bad the Lubbock Cotton Kings logo makes the Salmon Kings look brilliant by comparison and the Renfrew Creamery Kings?????
