COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) - Columbus Blue Jackets right wing Trevor Letowski will be sidelined four to six weeks after breaking his pinkie during Saturday's 5-0 win over the New York Rangers.
Signed as a free agent in the offseason, Letowski scored his first goal of the season in the first period. But he was slashed by defenseman Boris Mironov in the second period and did not return.
Mironov was not penalized, drawing the ire of Blue Jackets coach Doug MacLean.
"It was a vicious slash by Mironov," MacLean said. "It was ridiculous."
In 328 NHL games with Phoenix, Vancouver and Columbus, Letowski has 49 goals and 67 assists.
Must be badly broken...I hope.
Probably just didn't want to play us tomorrow.

A very immature thing to say. Never wish injury to anyone.
Burke's Evil Spirit 10-12-2003, 01:10 PM Dammit, I was looking forward to seeing him on Team ex-Canuck on Monday...
ehc73 10-12-2003, 01:12 PM It probably needed to be taped to his ring finger, so he can't get his hand in his glove. Plus he wouldn't be able to grip his stick, so until it heals, he's out. Makes sense.
Canadian Chris 10-12-2003, 01:16 PM that's why he should get the 3 finger mission gloves.
I believe it's your pinky and ring finger in one finger slot, and then your middle and index each have their own, and then your thumb...
with that, he could have it taped, and still be able to play :p
Peter Griffin 10-12-2003, 01:28 PM Tough luck for the "Big Letowski". Here's to a speedy recovery!
Impossibles 10-12-2003, 02:21 PM Am i the only one that thinks it's a little funny that a guy is out 4-6 weeks with a broken pinkie?
I'm not bashing letowski by any means, I actually really like him...but c'mon. I could understand a couple weeks, but tape the damn thing up so he can grip the stick and cut a hole in his glove. It's not like all your shooting strength comes from your pinkie.
Didn't mike York play last season with a broken freaking wrist?

Ok, you go and play a couple games of hockey with a broken pinky. Give the guy a break.
Impossibles 10-12-2003, 08:49 PM God I love the HF board attitude.
I post a little bit of info about an ex-canuck and make a little joke and all the sudden I am "the biggest ***** on HF boards" and apparently I give vancouver a bad name.
Learn to laugh a little people.
_Del_ 10-13-2003, 01:20 AM Cmon guys, four to six weeks for a broken pinkie is a bit ridiculous! I can't see him been out more than 2.
That's because you've never gripped a hockey stick with a broken pinkie...
Broken fingers don't sound like a big deal, but it hurts, trust me...
I've dislocated a pinkie and had a thumb broken (not at the same time thankfully) and it's not the kinda thing that simply hurts... your hand doesn't work right when all the pieces aren't in proper order.. moving your index finger flexes muscles and pulls ligaments that also bring pain to your pinkie even if you don't move it... touch your index finger to your palm and watch your pinkie finger.. now imagine a fracture in your finger that screams at you when it moves...
I think 4-6 weeks is somewhat liberal for the injury -- I'm sure he'll be able to skate and play before that, but it may verywell be 4-6 weeks before he's 'effectively' doing anything with that hand...
I Hate You All* 10-14-2003, 10:51 AM Was his glove on when he received the slash from Mirinov? Because yesterday Jim Hughson lightly joked that he almost had his finger cut off. Then when what's his name (I seriously can't think right now; 2 hrs sleep plus 2 midterms this morning) interviewed him he said they had to insert a pin? Sounds pretty serious to me.
Jovavic 10-14-2003, 04:55 PM He'll have a pin in it for awhile, then after that they'll know if they'll have to put it into a cast or not. Mironov slashed him really *** hard.
jacketracket* 10-15-2003, 05:41 PM According to the local rag here in Columbus, the tip of his finger was nearly hacked off---the bone at the tip was broken in two.
I can't imagine how that happens when you're wearing gloves, but it was apparently pretty serious.
Letowski had been moved up to the second line---is that an indication of the depth in Vancouver, or the lack of depth in Columbus? :D

Probably more of a lack of depth in Columbus..
in Vancouver rookie Reid managed to push Letowski out of the lineup. The guy has some offensive talent but is better defensively but he's pretty small as well.
Edler Statesman* 10-15-2003, 06:06 PM This sounds like something that Divealanche.com would make up about Forsberg

As important as Cassels and Lachance have been to the CBJ, I can't imagine how the Canucks could lose those two and not miss a beat.
That kind of depth is scary.
