Winnipeg Jets wear red helmets

Back in the mid 1990's, the Jets wore red helmets for a pair of games.

Does anyone know which games they were and if there are any other pictures or footage?

Thanks in advance!

I believe it was late March of 1995, all road games, and why, no idea.

Maybe it's a nod to this incident: (from the Winnipeg Jets Memorial Site)
Less than seven minutes into the game, the Bulls resorted to more of their embarrassing goon tactics when Dave Hanson ripped the hairpiece of Bobby Hull's head. Though Hanson was mysteriously not ejected for the deed, the Jets scored two power-play goals on Hanson's penalties to break open the contest early and cruised to a 9-3 victory. Hull was able to share in the satisfying win after returning to the game sporting a shiny red helmet. :shakehead

from a game on April 14, 1978.

It's almost certainly unrelated, but it's all I could find with a google search. Might have just been a case of lost luggage and a cash strapped team using whatever was on hand. Did the Springfield Falcons (their minor league affiliate at the time) wear red helmets?

No, Springfield wore black helmets at that time.

Apparently, the Jets wore red helmets in the WHA so maybe it was a homage to them.

i was under the impression that it was an honest attempt to differentiate themselves visually from the rangers.

This makes sense to me.

In the '70's and the '80 the Jets seemed to borrow whatever design the Rangers were using.

That was John Ferguson's idea. He brought in these unpopular Rangers jerseys, while he managed the tem:

When he was hired by the Jets in 1979, he decided to implement the jerseys in Winnipeg, after proving very unpopular to Rangers fans.

Did the Colorado Avalanche wear black helmets with their white jerseys at some point? I seem to have that image stuck in my head for some reason.

Yeah Colorado wore black helmets for some early in the regular season games. this video here has 'em around the five minute mark:

That video also has Roy in an unpainted white goalie mask around the 8 minute mark.

If you'd have told somebody in 1985 that the '96 Cup final was going to be between teams from Colorado and Florida I don't know what they'd tell you to do...

Ah thanks Trebek.

I think they did in their first preseason in Colorado.

In the video I posted above, you can see the Avs wearing black buckets during their first regular season home game, a 3-2 win over Detroit. around the 5 minute mark. I'm unsure how long that went on for, but it did take place for at least one (and likely more) regular season games.

Yup, and Boston's first game or two with the yellow alternate saw them wear white helmets.

Can't find any pictures, but, at 3:39 of this video it shows Ulf Nielsson wearing a red helmet.
