We have a new Lumme!

And his name is.... Belak!

Belak seems to have replaced Lumme as the local scapegoat, and cause for all of the worlds problems.

He can't fight, he's overpaid, he can't play D, he can't play forward, he takes too many penalties, he argues with the referee too much.

At this rate he will surely be the reason we didn't win the cup in 93 and any other year we've been close!

Dang, and here I was hoping you'd say Aki Berg. If he doesnt start to improve fast he's not going to have a very fun year seeing his name in the papers for all the wrong reasons.

Berg isn't much better than Belak, that's for sure.;):p

I really don't think you could pin Belak in the same boat as Lumme.
Lumme was horrid for years on the leafs Quinn is simply relying on Belak a little more then he should be. Quinn Rolled the 4th line a little to much and I think that may have something to do with the age of some of the players but that gives Belak more Ice time then he deserves and kinda giving him more responsibility then he should have.

Well lastnight Quinn hinted that the Leafs might trade Belak, that could be the plan and why they protected Perrott in the waiver draft.

I never saw the full game and I guess I missed that comment by quinn what exactly did he say?

Alas, we've been mislead all these years, Belak isnt descended from hell to cause ruin among the Leafs in every respect! ;)

Well hell did recently freeze over (Arankys-No fighting comments) so I suppose anything is possible.

Belak can fight, thanks to Domi.

I thought Berg played pretty well, for a change.

Two positive comments towards Belak in one thread, this ought to go into the history books.

BTW- Anyone want to place bets on whether Berg becomes the newest scapegoat should we lose Belak?

Joey24 - He just said that Belak keeps taking penalities, some are his fault some are bad calls, but he keeps getting them and that it may be best to trade him.

I agree. But unless he can stop making so many boneheaded mistakes Im afraid it won't be long before he becomes the next scapegoat. Hopefully McCabe will return soon and he'll get bumped out of the top-4 to cut his ice-time.

"unfortuneatly, we need berg's size"

I don't think the Leafs need his size. Jackman and Kondratiev play just as phyiscally (if not more so) then Berg does. Once McCabe comes back I'd rather have McCabe, Kaberle, Jackman, Kondratiev, Klee and Marchment on defense then having Berg in there somewhere.

Did you realize that Perrott in junior with the Oshawa Generals once scored 30 goals and 32 assist in just 59 games a few years back..

The time of the goon that can only fight is gone.. Perrott like Domi can play and if you need the toughness its there as well..

Belak you are the Weakest Link GOOD BYE..

STUPID PENALTIES

Part of this can be traced back to the reams of stupid penalties the Leafs regularly incur.

The Caps got on the board last night when Wade Belak took a totally unnecessary elbowing penalty on Jeff Halpern midway through the first period. Nine seconds after the play, Peter Bondra tied the game 1-1.

"It seems every time I hit a guy, I get an elbowing penalty," Belak said. "You try to play physical. I hit him with my shoulder, not my elbow."

Leafs coach Pat Quinn agreed and for good measure seemed to buy into the Leafs- are-victims-of-overzealous-refereeing theory.

"In Wade's case, I'm not sure it was a penalty," he said.

Quinn facetiously said he might have to trade Belak to buy Belak some slack with officials.

All well and good, but Belak applied what looked like an elbow to finish the play. He has beat a pretty steady path to the penalty box and more times than not, with ample cause.

As much as everyone is bashing Belak, Belak wasn't the one in the Box for the winning goal!! He is an enforcer and is always going to get penaltys on close calls. Sundin hasn't shown up for a game in my opinion since they were in Sweden. But don't see too many people talking ill of him.

With the exception of that penalty, Sundin was one of the better players last night.

To me it looks like Marchment will be a contender as well. The worst d last night, out-played by 20 yr old Kondratiev...Berg and Marchment will be torture to watch all yr. Hopefully one of them gets bumped out of the top 6.

It seems whenever Sundin takes a bad penalty, they get scored on. Considering what Washington got away with, the call was marginal imho.
Sundin played a spirited game, not registering a goal but outplayed Jagrl.

The difference is that a 4th line goon/grinder can't possibly have a huge negative effect on a team...he doesn't play enough. On the other hand, a defenceman taking a regular shift can KILL you (Lumme, Larry Murphy, Jamie Macoun) if he's on at the wrong time.
