I added Mara on my fantasy team thinking he might break out. I know it's still early but he's been non existent so far. Should i look elsewhere? I have Eric Brewer in the free agent pool and i'm tempted to make the swap.

Can you get Tanabe?? I belive that he will be the surprise break out player this year.. If not keep Mara..
Mara hasn't played as well as he did at the end of last season. He may be slightly contrained by the defensive system the Coyotes have instituted this year but that hasn't seemed to negatively affected Tanabe thus far this season. Season is only two games old but Tanabe likely has more offensive upside given that he is the quarterback of the PP.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback. Tanabe was available so i picked him up. I figure it's more of an experimentation at this point to find myself a keeper. I know it's only a few games into the season but whatever. Since Tanabe is the qb of the powerplay he's probably more likely to be picked up so i grabbed him. We'll see how it goes...

BF evidently likes Mara's play because as a second pair dman he gets the 2nd most icetime behind only Tanabe. Langkow gets the most ice time of any forward and even more than Tanabe. What's also interesting is that Tanabe is our top +\- player at +2. There are NO minus players. Mara is +0. Anyways, it's hardly the time to complain. 2 games only shows the potential. We still don't really know what kind of team we have. I must say, though, that 2 wins shows a lot of promise. 3 straight wins and we should already be organizing the parade.

...3 straight wins and we should already be organizing the parade.
Three straight would be great! BTW, I picked Tanabe for my fantasy team and I can only hope that he continues on this path. Very pleased, so far...:D

I have not been overly impressed by Mara so far, but he has not played poorly. The two defenseman that have stood out to me so far have been Vaananen, and obviously Tanabe. Hulse has also been better than I expected. Tanabe does look like he could have a breakout season this year and would be a better choice, imo, for a fantasy league.

Hmm the old Eric Brewer - Paul Mara threads have been lost I guess. Pity.
Anyway I think Mara deserves credit for notching up a 40 point year. Thats something not many Coyote defensemen have done. He was in the top 15 scoring defensemen.
Mara - 81 6-36-42 pts ($1,000,000)
Brewer - 77 7-18-25 pts ($2,500,000)
Career stats:
Mara 37-94-131 pts in 346 games
Brewer 34-79-113 pts in 404 games
Why does Brewer make two and a half times as much as Mara does? Hype basically.. There's some benefit to being an underhyped team :)

I truely can't say, because I don't see enough of the Oilers, and it is easy to be a homer and pick Mara -- but they are both great young defensemen.
Brewer seems like he may have plateaued in development from the point where everyone expected so much from him. The Oilers and Coyotes are near equals in many regards so it can't be said that one plays for a worse team or has a lesser role.
Brewer has become a consistent 7-18-25, 50 PIM threat the past 4 seasons now where as Mara had been a 7-18-25, 50 PIM threat for 3-4 seasons before this year where it could be considered he had a breakout. I'd bet for Brewer to have a 40+ point season next year and breakout himself, they are only 5 months off in age.
