Emotional trip awaits Nieuwendyk
By MIKE ZEISBERGER -- Toronto Sun
He missed out on an Oval Office tour.
His Stanley Cup ring will not be ready for at least another month.
Yet when the Maple Leafs depart for New Jersey tomorrow to kick off an emotional five-game road swing, Joe Nieuwendyk still will have plenty of reminders of his championship season of 2002-03.
When the New Jersey Devils raise their Stanley Cup banner to the rafters of the Continental Airlines Arena prior to their game against the Leafs on Thursday, Nieuwendyk can take pride in the fact that he played a role in bringing a third NHL title to the swamp.
Because he signed with the Leafs last month, Nieuwendyk was practising with his new team on the day the Devils went to the White House to meet U.S. president George W. Bush.
