WIth injuries to Gruden and possibly Brendan Witt..
Its a injury-depleted Defence..

Would Nolan Yonkman be brought up sooN???

I think playing him for 5 or 6 games in Portland for conditioning and then bringing him up for a permanent point in Washington would be great.

What's the message being sent by the organization? Fortin was the only defenseman not on the ice for a goal against in the last two games. The other five were on the ice for at least two each. The reward? A ticket to Portland.

Well it's probably because he got less ice than our 4th lnie forwards... he didn't even have a chance to get scored on.

The message is sends is, "you were called up because we didn't want to dress only 5 defensemen, but we don't think you are ready yet. don't expect much ice time and when witt is ready you will go back to portland"....Right now Cassidy has no options at Portland. Boumedienne, Kwiatkowski and Gruden, who should be in the AHL are on the Caps roster. Fortin and Berry are players that Cassidy has developed a distrust for. Yonkman is still getting in playing shape and Cutta just isn't ready yet. So, there are no defensemen at Portland that Cassidy would give any ice time to right now.

You guys must be one of the only teams where the coach makes the player moves. If you are trying to cut the budget . . . what do you need McPhee for? :D

Why was Fortin recalled?

Did you forget Witt/Gruden (Face/Groin) WERE PLACED ON IR

Berry didn't play so I can assume he's in DC, BEFORE JF was

McPhee controls who is on the roster. Cassidy controls who is in the lineup from that roster and controls the ice time. I think the question was why call up Fortin and give him 4:00 of ice time in two games then ship him back to Portland? McPhee did his job and chose a player to fill in for the injuried Witt. Cassidy dressed him because he had no extra defensemen, but chose not to use him more than a few shifts.

Ted already said that McPhee makes "most" of the roster moves. So there's no way to tell whose call it was.

Appears Yonkman could be called up this weekend....

"Notes: Cassidy and General Manager George McPhee have discussed recalling prospect Nolan Yonkman from the minors, a move that likely will happen before Saturday's game in St. Louis."

That's kind of strange considering that the reviews lately from Portland fans haven't exactly been raving.

Yeah, too bad about Fortin, sending down a defenseman that 29 other team had a shot at and passed on. Fortin played well with Witt two seasons ago, but has been junk ever since.

Interesting news about Yonkman.

You could give 29 other teams a shot at half of the Caps current defensive corps and they'd all pass.

True, but that doesn't change the fact that Fortin played like junk when he had the chance to play, IMO. Making any kind of stink about his being sent down is a bit absurd, especially based on stats. Hell, Kiwi led the league in +/- for a little bit, and we all know how misleading that is. If they sent him down I would jump for joy.

Were it up to me (and it's obviously not), Kiwi would be bought out, Gruden would be permanently in the press-box, and Boumer would have a very short leash. I'd rather play Yonkman and deal with some youngster's honest mistakes than watch these 'hi-jinx' of some of the current D corps.

Couldn't have said it better...

Though, i'd give Fortin a chance.. if Cutta was ready...i'd play him, Yonkman with Fortin, all prospect from the Caps system. With the current D..which is...**** :P there isn't much to lose is there?

Just seeing the Box score...5 minutes for Yonkman?...how am i not surprised...? GMGM and Cassidy should place more trust and responsibility in their youth, if they're going to get anywhere...
Kiwi Gruden should either be sent on waivers or traded..

Sending them down is not that useful, where we can give other prospects quality time to develop.

What I want to know is why Cutta hasn't been called up for a game or two. My cousin(Portland) says in his opinion Cutta has been Portland's #1 guy. Yonkman get's the callup last night and plays a total of 5 minutes. Everytime I saw him he was playing physical, why only 5 mins? I remember one play specifically where someone tried to skate in his direction, he stopped put his arms up and they ran into a brick wall. If your gonna have a young team and want them to get better you gotta play them. Only experience can make you better.

Yonkmand and Cutta were the top pair and were +1 over the first three games. The important stat to consider is that the P's lost all three and were outscored 8-3. Nice to come away + when you are outscored by 5. ;) Cutta played well in both games this weekend covering JF "wheel wheel wheel" Fortin's butt. He'll get his chance. All too many forget that he's only 21. As D-man go he's still pretty young in his development.

BTW heard that Yonkman was sent back down to Portland today. Guess he didn't really get any chance to show what he could do.

Great! THis is getting ridiculous..Yonkman / Fortin or Cutta getting sent up for one game? and 5 mins?!?!?!

Does anyone else there..think this is getting ridiculous!??! aside from all , that travel, i see this detrimental to the development of these players.

Look at players in the past, like Pahlson etc.etc. Although Pahlson has turned out well, others who continaully get carted up and down, lose
motivation, and frequently get frustrated. Aside from the fact, that these players will spend MORE time on the road than actual ice time at Washington, i reckon they'd be fatigued from travel, aside from the potential loss of motivation.

Aside from logging up frequent travel points, i find this very pointless.
