It was classic Lou Lamoriello. Vintage New Jersey Devils.

The banner was aided in its ascension by a goalie, two defensemen and a non-descript forward. The very formula that has won New Jersey three Stanley Cups, Lamoriello acclaim as a budget-minded executive and the Devils league-wide disdain as a team of starless, interchangeable parts.

It was the first time New Jersey fans have seen the Stanley Cup on home ice since the Devils won it 140 nights ago. It will most likely be the last time they see it again until next June, provided of course the assembly line-like team that calls the Meadowlands home makes it that far.

New Jersey actually hung three banners last night. The one for winning the Atlantic Division. The one for winning the Eastern Conference. And, finally, the massive cup banner. It will hang behind the net that Brodeur protects during the first and third periods of home games.

How fitting.
