Tbg1515 10-17-2003, 07:53 PM Rematch of last years 2nd round.....Should be interesting TB will be out to get revenge on the Devs.....I wonder if Grahame will start or Khabby, Maybe grant marshall can score the winner again
Whos jersey to wear tomorow,
Marshall, Rafalski, or Marty's
my prediction
5-2 Devils
NJ Goals: Brylin, Madden, Gomez, Rupp, Larionov
TB Goals: St Louis, Richards
Marty 32 saves
Grahame 23 saves
Unthinkable 10-17-2003, 07:58 PM Bolts have been getting some good scoring from the D and made previously unbeaten Phoenix look pretty bad the other night. I was wondering myself if Grahame would get the starting job in nets considering how well he matched up against us in the postseason. Lightning are looking good so far. Should be a tough tough game. You know they are going to throw everything and I mean everything at the Devils in this one. They will be aggressive as hell in the 1st period.
Unthinkable 10-17-2003, 08:05 PM Should be interesting to see which player impresses more in this game. Rupp vs. Modin. Rupp saw his ice time gradually lessened in the 3rd period against the Leafs while Modin is getting about 5 minutes less ice time a game and a ton less PP time thus far. Frederik isn't happy about this at all.
dennisjs 10-17-2003, 09:24 PM 4-3 Lightning. Devil goals- Marshall, Madden, Rasmussen...
NJDraft 10-18-2003, 11:40 AM TB has come out strong, and since NJ isn't scoring yet it should be a tough game. I'd say 3(en) 1, Devils. I don't like to put so much pressure on Marty this early but we have to accept the fact that if the opp. gets 3g, we're prob. going to loose. Untill, Gionta,Ellias,Rupp,Lang et.al,get it in gear.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 01:50 PM NJ snapped Tampa's unbeaten streak this time last year. Lets see if they can do the same thing tonight.
MattNJD 10-18-2003, 01:51 PM Berglund always seems to score against TB. Look for him to score tonight.

Lest we forget, it was in the same building that Tampa Bay's season ended last season in the longest game played in Lightning history. Turner Stevenson slipped a puck under the outstretched arms of John Grahame in the third overtime of Game 5 to send Tampa Bay home with tired muscles, long faces - and a lot to think about.
Anyone want to inform ERIK ERLENDSSON that it was actually Grant Marshall who beat Grahame in OT?
NJDevils#4 10-18-2003, 02:21 PM DAMN METRO!!! I'm stuck watching the Islander game. :madfire:
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 02:33 PM Anyone else wondering why Sunshine network is showing college football highlights right now instead of the game????
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 02:34 PM Did this game get bumped to 8pm est? No NHL radio yet either. :dunno:
ratsgirl 10-18-2003, 02:35 PM if i'm reading the nhl.com lineup right, nieds is not playing but both hale and martin are. ugh.
Vanya 10-18-2003, 02:38 PM It looks like the Center Ice free preview is over so I gotta stop being lazy and order it.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 02:40 PM Larionov is in there with Friesen and Brylin. Khabibulin is in nets for Tampa Bay,
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 02:42 PM TB announcers just mentioned Niedermayer was a last minute scratch with a sore back.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 02:47 PM Gomez had a great attempt with a partial breakaway on Khabibulin on the Devils first PP of the night. Paul Martin was solid in clearing a shorthanded TB bid just moments before this.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 02:52 PM Brodeur makes the toughest save of the game thus far. Odd hearing all the cheers from the crowd seeing the Devils wearing the road jerseys at home.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 02:58 PM Burns sent Stevens home this morning but he's back playing tonight sick with strept throat.
Cibak scores from a behind the net pass by Clymer.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 03:03 PM Friesen stopped on a breakaway. Lightning are flying right now.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 03:04 PM Langenbrunner with a huge hit on Brad Richards.
BigBully4 10-18-2003, 03:22 PM Langenbrunner with a huge hit on Brad Richards.
Reports out of Toronto say that NIEDERMAYER is being dealt right after the game to the Red Wings for Whitney, McCarty, and Kuznetsov (sp?). That's why he's a healthy scratch. I hope they're not right.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 03:23 PM Tortorella just gave the Devils perhaps the nicest compliments of any opposing coach I've heard in awhile now. Classy classy guy to say all the things he did. Feaster had the same praise for Lamoriello and the Devils right beforehand.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 03:24 PM Reports out of Toronto say that NIEDERMAYER is being dealt right after the game to the Red Wings for Whitney, McCarty, and Kuznetsov (sp?). That's why he's a healthy scratch. I hope they're not right.
Are you serious????

EH?! HUH?!
That's...TERRIBLE.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 03:29 PM Elias hits one on the far side at 1:54 of the 2nd period.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 03:37 PM Welcome to the NHL Paul Martin. Shoots from the right circle and bangs one in from a bad angle. Larionov's knee looking ok so far.
DevilFisch 10-18-2003, 03:37 PM Go Paul Martin! He just made it 2-1.
I'm listening to this game on the radio-METRO can go suck eggs.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 03:47 PM I don't even know who Kuznetsov is or who that possible player could be. We don't have a suitable replacement ready to step in and do what Scott Niedermayer does night in and night out just yet. I can't imagine Lou would deal away a top tier defenseman and not get another one back in return.
Vinnie 10-18-2003, 03:56 PM How bout Rafalski? 6 assists in 2 2/3 games so far. Wow. And can we stop proposing trades involving Elias and/or Gomez yet?
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 03:58 PM Tampa scores on a 5 on 3 after Albelin went to the penalty box. Lecavalier gets the equalizer.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 03:59 PM Hale with a brief fight against Clymer. Looks like he held his own there.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 04:10 PM Scoring Summary
1st Period
Tampa Bay 11:52, Martin Cibak 1 (Ben Clymer, Fredrik Modin)

TB 1 for 3
Faceoffs:
NJ Won 20 Lost 21
TB Won 21 Lost 20
Elias leading the team with 4 shots on goal.
Vanya 10-18-2003, 04:19 PM Alright, just got the game on. Good to see Elias and Martin on the board!
OT: Yanks-Fish tied at 1 in the 4th...
Missionhockey 10-18-2003, 04:22 PM Sounds like Elias is having a good night. If Niedermayer was traded I'd flip a (insert 4 letter word)!
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 04:22 PM Brylin and Paul Martin both are looking impressive tonight. Martin was more poised on one of our 3 power plays then I've seen him to date. Good QB work out on the point. Rafalski is also looking good. Elias was interviewed between periods and he said the same thing which has been written in the papers which is he's challenged himself to be more of a leader this year.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 04:29 PM Bolts announcers were in absolute horror over how Rupp and Gionta were allowed to waltz right in down low. Madden seems to be slowly rounding into form. I think last years playoffs took a lot out of the guy as evidenced by his slower then normal start to the season and him looking so tired against Boston in game 1.
DevilFisch 10-18-2003, 04:43 PM Wait, the Devils sold out?!
Now I'm really surprised.
OK, still 2-2. About 5 minutes left, Devils could score and win this thing.
Vanya 10-18-2003, 04:44 PM Ilya Kovalchuk with the first hat trick of this young season in a 7-2 uh, thrashing of Chicago. Can't help but pull for Atlanta this year.
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 04:44 PM St. Louis burns Stevens then rips a sweet goal by Brodeur.
Vanya 10-18-2003, 04:46 PM Damn. 3-2 on a nice St-Louis goal. We could tie this up in 4 minutes...
Vanya 10-18-2003, 04:50 PM Is it "hat night" at the CAA?
Vanya 10-18-2003, 04:52 PM Atlanta has great coaching and a great young team, Heartley will have this team scratching for a playoff spot.
Hiring Bob Hartley was a stroke of genius. And it looks like Kovalchuk is stepping it up in Heatley's absence.
DevilFisch 10-18-2003, 04:54 PM Final Score: 3-2 TB
Ugh.
They scored just as I posted that the Devils could still win this. In response, I refuse to jinx the Devils anymore.
MattNJD 10-18-2003, 05:00 PM That was an unacceptable lose tonight! Just terrible! How many friggin breakaways do we need??? I guess the 5 we DIDN'T score on just wasn't enough. Horrible! And please please please get Paul Martin in Albany... NOW! Yea he scored a goal, yippe, give him the puck and a bus ticket. He gets knocked off the puck is some sneezes near him. Speaking of defense, whats the deal with our D pairings?? Everyone being paired with everyone just doesn't work. Why has Sean Brown not played a game yet? Hope Niedermayer back get better quickly. 1 win in 5 games sucks! There better not be a cup hangover going on here!
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 05:01 PM Penguins beat Detroit 4-3. What a huge win for them.
Vanya 10-18-2003, 05:02 PM Penguins beat Detroit 4-3. What a huge win for them.
MA Fleury with 30+ saves for his first win.
MattNJD 10-18-2003, 05:03 PM Paul Martin got the third star, I hope I see more of this in the future.
How? Who voted.. a bunch of drunken blind people? He scored a goal, one goal, then looked terrible from then on in. Three stars should have been:
1.Bulin
2.St. Louis
3.Rafalski
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 05:11 PM Martin and Albelin were the only two players to be positive in the game for the Devils. Stevens had a rough turn of events getting caught flat footed at mid ice before St. Louis rushed in on the right wing side. Rafalski and Stevens were both -2 for what its worth even though Rafalski played well. I thought Martin was deserving of his star. The Lightning are a quick skating team and he did a good job of not looking completely out of his league in this one against a team with a lot to prove. Stevens was a trooper playing sick, but he looked like it was affecting his play a bit.

Are you from the future and are telling us that the Devils will not beat Florida on Wednesday?
Unthinkable 10-18-2003, 05:23 PM Final Score: 3-2 TB
Ugh.
They scored just as I posted that the Devils could still win this. In response, I refuse to jinx the Devils anymore.
You didn't jinx them at all. Tampa played a good 3rd period and our numerous odd man rushes were never capitalized on as pointed out earlier in this thread. Someone needs to put an APB out on Jeff Friesen.

That reminds me of something Pat Burns said last year. Something about seeing Friesen's head, heart, and legs. And how it would be great if he could see them all together. Oh, how I wish I had that quote!
dennisjs 10-18-2003, 05:39 PM Bad loss. Gionta needs to start contributing offensively at some point and could this team suck any more on breakaways?
MattNJD 10-18-2003, 05:51 PM Are you from the future and are telling us that the Devils will not beat Florida on Wednesday?
I actually have a magic mirror. Pretty cool stuff.

Tao Jones 10-18-2003, 09:19 PM Too early to say, but the one-goal games we won last year may be going the other way this year. Stevens said last season that so many one-goal games were grinding both physically and mentally on everybody.
The experiment continues with the rookie D. Class move by Burns to recognize Tommy, by giving him the substitute "A", with Nieds out of the line-up tonight. Still a close game with Stevens sick and Nieds MIA.
Madden must be playing with a bum wrist or hand. He buried his 3-on-1 chance in Nikolai's crest, and lost the giveaway on St.Louis' gamewinner.
As far as the Detroit trade rumor goes: McCarty wants to retire a Red Wing, and if Lou wanted Whitney, he would have signed him this summer.
Would like to see Elias stop shooting the puck over the crossbar.
If things continue, I'd like to see a deal for a goal-scorer before the new year.
Vanya 10-18-2003, 10:09 PM If things continue, I'd like to see a deal for a goal-scorer before the new year.
Deja vu... We hoped and hoped last year for one before the deadline, that's for damn sure. :D

ONE BAD SEQUENCE, ONE DISTURBING LOSS
By MARK EVERSON
October 19, 2003 -- Call it the Triple Klutz, straight out of Ice Follies.
In a flash of a few fatal seconds, three Devils bulwarks were breached. Mr. 2001 Selke, Mr. 2000 Smythe and Mr. 2003 Vezina each blundered, combining for the Devils' first loss since they won the Stanley Cup.
The play was a Devils nightmare that epitomized and sealed one very unusual and uncharacteristic Devils Night. The resulting 3-2 loss to the Lightning at the Meadowlands ended their unbeaten start and their streak since March 17 of 14 regular-season games with at least one point.
The Devils looked like the Rangers defensively last night, giving up 2-on-1s relentlessly, and resembled themselves offensively, squandering breakaways upon 2-on-1 ad nauseum. The game was there to be won, and instead, they handed it over to the Lightning.
